I magnetized a 7/64 Allen <hex> wrench, painted the center portion day-glo orange and and stuck it near the card cage of my G-Brick. That way it's always handy when I need it <and easy to find if I drop it>.

Does GVC = DG5-2/GVO?

The manual is pretty good - you'll also need the DIVO software - it's available at free at SGI's Supportfolio site <and is mirrored other places as well>. The installation instructions are here: http://techpubs.sgi.com/library/tpl/cgi ... notes/divo
Though not an intended factory option, the Onyx2 DIVO can be installed in an Octane , which allows the user to run VPro graphics - unlike the Octane specific DIVO, which requires MGRAS graphics.

Glad you were able to get it working. I still have a DIVO, but no longer have a system with XIO slots that fit it, so I'm working from memory on the DIVO demos. I'm certain they were installed, because I tried them out <though it seems like seems like at least a few wanted an SD video feed>. If you can't find them, you could double check to see if perhaps they weren't selected by default during the install.

If you don't already have it, there's also Shotmaker. If you scroll backwards in the previously linked 'DIVO in an Octane' thread, you'll find a copy of the complimentary license released by SGI and pointers on where Shotmaker can be downloaded. And if you haven't already used it, divotest is probably worth running. If you have several DIVO boards and enough slots in your Onyx2, you can test them all at once.
rusti wrote:
Did not do that with the second Onyx2 because it did not boot to a graphical login even though console was set to g. Turns out its probably an issue with the graphics pipe because the fresh install does not work either. Will post SYSLOG later.
A bad pipe shouldn't stop the system from booting. You might clone the boot disk of your running system and try booting the problem system with the cloned disk. If you can boot <even in single user mode>, try running /usr/diags/IR/bin/irsaudit -c to test the IR pipe.

If your copy of Blender came from the blender.org web site , they suggest:
Blender.org wrote:
Installation instructions

To install Blender, download the appropriate package for your platform to your computer. The Windows version comes with an optional self-extracting installer, for other operating systems you can unpack the compressed file to the location of your choice.

Provided the Blender binary is in the original extracted directory, Blender will run straight out of the box. No system libraries or system preferences are altered.
The IRIX Software Manager isn't needed. Decide where you'd like to install blender and untar the archive there - it will create it's own directory. The blender.org distribution is self-contained, it should run from where ever you decide to locate the expanded tar file.

As an example <assuming you have downloaded the most recent version of Blender from their web site>:
If the blender tar file is in your home directory, tar -xvf blender-2.49a-irix-6.5-mips-py2.5.tar
That will create a directory named "blender-249a-irix-6.5-mips-py2.5"
Blender can then be run from inside that directory.

You can also directly open the tardist file with the Software Manager GUI. Open Software Manager: Toolchest > System > Software Manager - Near the top left corner of the Software Manager Window, just to the right of "Available Software:" will be a square 'drop pocket'. Drag the icon of your tardist and drop it into that pocket, then click the "Lookup" button.

Once you get the tardist loaded into Software Manager, you can use Software Manager's "Help" menu if you get stuck. Before you even start I'd suggest reading through Chapter 2 (Software) of the IRIX 6.5 Personal System Administration Guide: http://techpubs.sgi.com/library/tpl/cgi ... /ch02.html - btw - it wouldn't be a bad idea to bookmark and read through the entire personal system admin guide.

I think I mentioned it before, but the IRIX Desktop User's Guide is also a great reference, and will help IRIX become less of an alien environment. http://techpubs.sgi.com/library/tpl/cgi ... rs%20Guide

Thanks for the post - makes for an interesting comparison with the Origin 350.

The only A350 I got a fairly close look at didn't have the XIO2 slot on the back side of the PCI riser. Did your A350 come with that riser and IO9, or did you add them?

In any case, since your does have the XIO2 slot, you might consider trying a Fuel V10 in there <ala the O350 IP hack>. Issues of <the lack of> open source OS support for Odyssey graphics aside, it'd be the ultimate SGI hybrid system - kind of a Prism in reverse. ;) <and if they work having graphics would be a decent fringe benefit>.

It looks like there room for the uncut VPro heatsink, so testing a Fuel V10 might not involve much more than temporarily removing the VPro bulkhead and one radial fan from the Altix - not much more effort than trying a PCI graphics board.

The XIO slot doesn't appear in the env output of the Altix, but I doubt that they included the slot with out hardwiring the voltage lines in the riser PCB <not to mention it's probably a carryover from the O350 with an identical part number>.

Yeah - thats why I mentioned the lack of open source support - though it looks like OpenBSD 4.7 has limited console-level Odyssey support :

Unfortunately, the IRIX 6.5.22 set you downloaded from SGI doesn't include everything necessary to upgrade from 6.3 to 6.5 or even enough to do a clean install IRIX 6.5 install. Those three disks are what's called an overlay set. They are intended to provide just enough to 'overlay' an existing IRIX 6.5 install to upgrade it to 6.5.22.

In a sense IRIX Overlay CDs are similar to the 'upgrade only' disks common to many other types of software - they only work to upgrade certain previous versions of that software, and can't be used to install the software from scratch.

If you'd like more information on the subject, or would like to see how other have resolved or recommended resolution of similar situations, you might try searching the forums for "overlay". To get you started here's a search I've set up for you:
search.php?keywords=overlay+&=Search

The results are pretty broad spectrum, you can add additional search terms and norrow the results if you see things that interest you.

Renaming files isn't going to help - it's more likely to cause harm to your IRIX install.

The demos.sw.base inst is asking for is located on one of the original IRIX install library disks. The install program is asking for the original file because the O2 demo disk alone only provides an incomplete upgrade.

Four 700MHz processors, 4GB of RAM, V10 graphics, the front panels are in excellent condition. It has an up to date operating system, and is also has an SGI issued MIPSPro 7.4 license. I also have a spare L2 controller <with the touch screen LCD and cable> if you'd like the full O350 experience.

If you don't turn up anything Versa specific, you might pull the LCD panel and see if you can locate the OEM info/part number. Barring the occasional high-end unit or zealous over-engineering, most laptops used generic LCD panels.

I have a box full of ThinkPads that have been semi-dissected for parts - maybe one might fit the bill

Welcome to nekochan Bubba.

Is Bubba a common name in Croatia? :D That used to be an exclusive south-of-the-Mason-Dixon name. Even now I could still make at least a dozen or so people say "what?" by walking into any local public event and hollering Bubba - and at least half of the head-turners would probably have Bubba officially inscribed on their driver's license.

Bubba wrote:

Free? Unfortunately not from SGI.

Bubba wrote:

You're probably talking to the wrong person - especially if you emailed the Faculty of Science blind. Couple of years ago I acquired a 24 processor Origin 2400 from a local university. The suit-n-tie/bean counter/responsible person <except for the suit-n-tie I'm not sure which fits best> who I communicated with while negotiating transfer of the system told me "absolutely not" when asked about IRIX. When I picked the system up, the t-shirt equipped/graduate student/IT guy said, "sure thing".

Bubba wrote:

That's a work in progress - you might check over at openBSD/sgi for the latest info. A couple of the openBSD dev guys post here on a semi-regular basis, so maybe one will pick up your post and step in

Haven't had an O200, but in general they are distributed with <and installed from> IRIX.

Got an email from Sun/Oracle today entitled "Free Oracle Solaris Training" , so maybe Solaris isn't as close to extinction as has been speculated.

Looks like they also have a new <to me anyway> catch-phrase " Software.Hardware. Complete " <with red-lettering used to emphasize 'complete' part of the slogan.>

It remains to be seen what bearing this will have on a freely-available-to-the-public version of Solaris.

There is some good O2 Diagnostic/troubleshooting info over in the neko-wiki:
http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/index.php/ ... _Flowchart
http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/index.php/ ... _Procedure

But before you start doing anything that involves hardware disassembly, I'd take a close look at the possibility your monitor isn't compatible - a green LED at power up is a good sign.

You can connect a serial terminal to your O2 and receive the output of the power-on-diagnostics, and even boot and run the O2 in that fashion. http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/index.php/ ... l.29_cable

That'd be the best way to determine exactly what's going on with your O2.

As an indirect follow up to my suggestion to web search answers to vfaq-type questions, someone mentioned that web searches usually returned pages of useless or potentially harmful junk.

I'm sure this won't come as any surprise to most nekochan members, but it is possible to exclude some or all of the empty-content sites that seem to appear at the top of every Google web search.

You can tell Google not to include specific domains by including
Code:
-site:worthless_domain.com
in your search string. As an example, if to exclude nekochan.net from a search, include
Code:
-site:nekochan.net
in the google search string. The key is to include the leading minus <"-"> in your Google search modifier.

If I remove the minus from the search modifier, Google will restrict the search exclusively to the site listed in the modifier. So as an example, I could use Google to search only nekochan.net by adding
Code:
site:nekochan.net
to my Google search string.

This one is pretty basic. If you have any other useful web search tips or tricks, feel free to follow up with a post.
