The collected works of recondas - Page 6

After switching back and forth between PS/2 and USB mouse/keyboard on my O350, my ioconfig.conf was kind of cluttered. When I decided to limit the directly connected kb&m to USB stuff I wanted to clean the file up. Rather than edit I just started from scratch.
Rename or delete ioconfig.conf <to play it safe I renamed my original to ioconfig.conf.O>
    Power down.
Connect the keyboard/mouse you want to use.
Reboot - if it doesn't do what you want reinstate the original file.

If you just need to cleanup ioconfig.conf <and the system functions with the keyboard and mouse you intend to use>, no reboot is necessary.
Make a back up copy of ioconfig.conf.
Open the original and delete *all* of the keyboard and mouse entries; then close the file.
    As root execute:

    Code: Select all

    # /sbin/ioconfig -f /hw
    - for confirmation you can check /dev/input* directories and/or re-examine ioconfig.conf

In my case the USB kb&m are still connected but are currently in the back of the rack <for the odd admin task> because I'm using an IBM M2 via Synergy.

If you don't know the IP address it might be simpler to log in via a serial terminal.

You could just restore the copy you made of ioconfig.conf, but I think I'd also save a copy of the newly generated one <that didn't work> to see what entries were made. Then reboot with the keyboard and mouse that were attached originally. I'd also suggest leaving the serial terminal attached during that reboot - the Fuel may be different, but I get diagnostic output on the console port my O3x0 systems even when a keyboard and mouse are attached and the system is booting in graphical mode.

As smooth as the change might have appeared to the those of us using nekochan, I'm sure it involved a significant amount of planning and effort to implement. Thanks for all the hard work!

So, are there plans for a VPro in Wadatsumi's immediate future? :D

IRIX uses /var/sysgen/master.d/scsi to identify and define the capabilities of tape drives. The file contains several for the Exabyte *8200 and 8500 8mm*, but no VXA-2 If there are any drives with similar hardware technology, you might be able to modify one using the procedure outlined in the nekowiki: http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/ ... r_IRIX_6.5 I'd strongly recommend you make a backup of the original /var/sysgen/master.d/scsi before you make any edits.

Some manufacturers wrote their own IRIX definition files - though it doesn't appear that Exabyte/Tandberg released one for the VXA-2 series:

VFC is located on Foundation 2. That version of VFC was compatible with IRIX 6.5. 0 , so you'll have to update the program to match your current IRIX revision. The updates to VFC are located on Overlay Disk 2 <or are with 6.5.30>.

BTW- If you'd like a convenient list of whats on each of the IRIX install disks, load file:///var/www/htdocs/WhatsNew/install/cds_frame.html into your browser <while running IRIX 6.5.x, of course>.

I just set up an Intel D945GCLF and have been very pleased with it. I used an Apex MI008 case , a 2GB DIMM and a PATA HD/DVD-RW. The only fan in the system is the 40mm unit that Intel puts on the chipset heatsink. The system runs cool and is nearly silent, the fan only being noticeable briefly after a cold start or for about 30 seconds when the system is awakened from power-saving mode.

It's running Leopard and has been very stable. The D945GCLF has a single Atom 230 processor. This version of the 230 does have hyper-threading, the activity monitor in Leopard shows it as a two-processor system.

Thanks! It's been running 24/7 since I set it up. Boots Leopard and awakens from sleep-mode noticeably faster than either of the G4s I have <dual 1GHz and single 1.5Ghz>.
nekonoko wrote:
Did the MI-008 case wind up being the same internally as the Apex MI-100?
Near as I can tell from the photos, identical. One standard sized optical drive bay <with a door that opens/closes as the DVD tray is extended/retracted>; two 3.5" bays, one just below the 5.25" bay<with external access via a cover plate so a removable media drive could be used >, the other 3.5" bay is a vertical mount located internally at the right rear. There are front mounted USB and audio connectors behind a small "push-to-open" door.

GFC is an open source modeline generator that takes a desired resolution and vertical refresh rate, and computes mode timings. If it can be compiled, it might be handy for those wanting to make custom display resolutions using the IRIX tool VFC.

The Octane and O2 have lots to like, not the least of which is an attractive appearance and great hardware/engineering. If you want to collect SGI hardware for occasional use, exposure to some of the third-party applications of the era, or just the IRIX experience, I don't think you could go wrong with either.

If your goal is a general purpose IRIX desktop for daily use, I'd suggest skipping over the Octane and going to a 600MHz or faster Fuel. Or keep the O2/Octane and use them as the display for an O300 or O350.

Slower than data from a hard drive connected to a 40MB/s bus? Probably not by a whole lot - unless there's a multi-drive stripe and/or a faster controller added.

Another member has a 600MHz Fuel listed in the For Sale Forum for $225. He's on the west coast, so you'd have to pay shipping, but the total should still come in under $300. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16722806

For roughly the same money you'd get twice the processor speed <with faster memory/SCSI, so more than the obvious 2x linear performance increase>, faster graphics hardware <with texture memory and a DVI interface>, 3x the disk space, and an DVD drive.

The seller, whiter, has been around here pretty much from day 1. He *knows* what will and won't work with SGI hardware - don't know if the same could be said about a relatively anonymous eBay seller

SGI PCI Digital Audio Board <also known as the RADical Audio board>. The SGI part number for the example shown is 030-1649-001, it appears in an hinv with PCI vendor ID 0x10a9(SGI) and a device ID of 0x0005(RAD Audio): =
Radical_audio.jpg
Radical_audio.jpg (97.21 KiB) Viewed 2667 times
Last generation RADical Audio board; universal voltage board (works in 3.3 or 5 volt PCI slots); the shape of 030-1649-00x boards was redesigned to ensure proper operation with the PCI Carrier used in Origin 3x0/3x00 I/IX/P Bricks.

SGI made four versions of the RADical Audio board. Those versions were nicely summarized by Reed Lawson on his Many Incarnations of RADical web page (which originally appeared on the now defunct reality.sgi.com). Here's a brief description of each revision, excerpted from the Many Incarnations of RADical (obtained via the Internet Wayback Machine).
030-0950-001 -- The original (5 volt PCI only)
030-0950-002 -- We added the special ksync connector for O200 (still 5 volt only)
030-1441-001 -- First "universal" version (3.3 or 5 volt PCI) for sgi 320/540
030-1649-001 -- Slightly better card outline for SN1 (O3000). Also "universal".
A similar descriptive summary is also included in the PCI Digital Audio Board Installation Guide (available on-line or as a download from SGI's Technical Publications Library).
