The collected works of recondas - Page 24

uunix wrote: ah.. it's not displaying XT-DIGVID board.. well spotted recondas.

On the odd chance you don't already know, the XT-DIGVID (aka the DM2) won't work with the classic SGI (primarily analog) video tools like videoin or the underlying video daemon (videod). Instead they use SGI's later (digital) video media libraries (aka OpenML).

If you don't already have the software libraries for your DM2, you can freely download them SGI's Supportfolio site or Ian's Depot Resources page.

If a little additional background might prove helpful, this thread might be interesting: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=16727126&p=7354470&#p7354470

After you're able to get the DM2 to appear in an hinv -vm , you can try some of the tools supplied in the DM2 software, like xtdigvid_hinv or xtdigvid_confidence .

Before you do any disasssembly I'd suggest connecting a serial terminal to see if you can get a better idea of what's wrong from either the L1 or PROM.

TeamBlackFox wrote: The owner said it didn't work, says it flashes the video card fault code.
If you're lucky the issue might be easily corrected. If you power up the somewhat-similar Tezro without a keyboard and mouse connect, the L1 display will advise "gfx cfg err". The Fuel User Guide advises the brinking red-white lightbar your seller seems to suggest he's seen also indicates the same "graphics configuration error". Perhaps the seller didn't have the kb&m connected, or had the connections reversed (I can't recall for certain if the Fuel and Tezro share the no-keyboard/mouse=gfx cfg err. Still have a Fuel but haven't had the occasion to start it in over a year).

If you're less lucky, the Fuel version of the V10 can usually be had for not too much. That would let you find out if other than graphics the Fuel will run (without having to invest more than you paid for the Fuel in a V12).

BTW, to avoid potential confusion in the future I'll mention in the SGI/IRIX world the terms graphics and video are not interchangeable. Your post may well have missed some potentially helpful input because the title of your thread implied you had a Fuel *video* problem rather than a Fuel *graphics* problem.

I didn't see anything in the manual that looked like a certified show-stopper:

We're not talking PC, but that note should be a fairly good indication connecting a Tezro and a 23" Cinema Display shouldn't involve an adapter.

If it works as described you should be able to use the 1920x1200_60.vfo provided with an IRIX install. If it doesn't play nice with the IRIX-supplied vfo, connect the monitor to a PC or Mac so you can read the EDID info, and create a specific-to-your-monitor vfo. Few other interesting things too. The less-often-seen metal fascia, an IO6G and an IR1 jumper. Even with that (and six hippi cards), there's one too many zeros in the price tag.

j-j's right though, between the plethora of hippi ports and three node boards, makes you wonder if whoever sold or traded the O2k into the eBay seller decided to shoehorn in all their left over SGI hardware hoping it'd raise the value.

Haven't had the privilege of an Onyx(1), but if your RealityEngine2 shares enough commonality with InfiniteReality graphics the vfo needed for the FW900 might already be on the system.

Some were included with an InfiniteReality system install, inside /usr/gfx/ucode/KONA/dg4/vof.

Take a look and see if you have a directory structure similar to /usr/gfx/ucode/KONA/dg4/vof. Hopefully an install for RE2 graphics will contain some pre-compliled display formats.

Inside the IR-specific vfo directory are a number of pre-compiled display formats. Looking at the refresh rates I'd guess several of those wide-aspect formats were intended for the SGI oem'd Sony widescreen CRTs:
    2048x1120_72
    1920x1200_66
    1920x1200_60
    1920x1200_50
There are more, but some appear to be intended for specialized cinematic or broadcast use, and others for combined displays or projector-based cave systems. Hopefully your RE2 install will have something similar

If none of the precompiled formats work (or they don't exist for your Onyx(1) RE), post back and we'll look into converting your hex-based EDID into something we can hopefully create a custom format from. I'll need to know a little more about what RE2 is capable of (max pixel clock, etc), and the underlying catch22 for using VFC to create custom display formats is the availability of SGI-supplied board and chip rules definition files (for use with VFC). The graphics sets supported by VFC are (indirectly) listed in /usr/gfx/ucode/vfc/rules; V6, V8, V10, V12 (VPro for Octane2), SI,SSI, MXI, SE, SSE, MXE (MGRAS for Indigo2 and Octane with Impact graphics), O2 graphics , and InfiniteReality (the dg4 and voc1 definition files). RE2 graphics might prove to be a stretch.

vishnu wrote: recondas will happily use his god-damned VFO skills to compile one for you.

From what you've posted it wouldn't appear RealityEngine2 graphics are supported by VFC.

Even if we set aside the issue of what tool to use to create a custom display format, the apparent lack of pre-compiled wide-screen formats (with refresh rates in the range typically used by desktop monitors) seem to suggest a 1920x1200 display format ( recommended for the FW900 in 16:10 mode ) might exceed RE2 capabilities. Found some of the RE2 documents provided on Ian's web site that *seem* to confirm that supposition:
Visual Output:
1 to 6 hi-resolution (1280 x 1024) outputs/system
http://www.futuretech.blinkenlights.nl/ ... hicig.html

and
RealityEngine2:
VGA up to 1600x1200
http://www.futuretech.blinkenlights.nl/onyxgs.html

Might be time for someone with RE2 graphics experience to weigh in. jan-jaap?

No disagreements with respect to SGI's Cosmo Code, but my reminder was in response to the request for an image of one of Microsoft's MSFT Site Builder CDs. While that CD is reported to include a number of demo/trail applications, knowing MS I wouldn't be surprised to find the EUA/license specifically forbids third-party distribution of the contents.

gijoe77 wrote: Other then bragging rights, any benefit to having a twin V12 Tezro Tower or would one need a compositor to take advantage of that? I actually have Two V12 and this has me thinking...
A Compositor concentrates multiple VPro graphics pipes into a single display. A very interesting concept, but apparently doesn't work transparently with every application. Not to say multiple pipes can't be applied to every day use, whatever your target application(s) is/are. For me the primary advantage is more monitors / desktop real estate. With the assistance of SGI's (freely available) OpenGL MultiPipe, you can transparently span your work space (and applications) across multiple monitors. While you can do something similar with Cinerama, only the primary pipe will be able to display OpenGL / 3D graphics. OpenGL MultiPipe removes the primary-pipie-only restriction on OpenGL/3D visuals. With two V12s and two DCDs, you could easily run a 3200x1200 desktop that allows corner to corner display of OGL/3D visuals: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=16722294&&start=15#p7359110

BTW, it's been mentioned, but a Tezro Tower definitely wouldn't be my first choice for a dual V12 platform. The Tezro Tower has two XIO slots, but the second was intended for XIO peripherals other than Graphics boards, and apparently doesn't provide the power traces needed to enable VPro graphics boards. Spoonified unsuccessfully tried adding a second VPro in his Tezro Tower , and discovered the L1 controller wouldn't allow the system to power up. Pierocks did something similar with the not-intended for graphics XIO slot in an X-Brick attached to his O3200, his solution was to provide 24v power to some of the traces in the XIO slot so the VPro could be successfully powered up. Don't know if more-power is the solution for the non-graphics slot in a Tezro Tower, but that might the next step for any damn-the-torpedoes-who-knows-if-it'll-work pioneers.

There's a simple comparison of the V12 and a few variations of InfiniteReality graphics in this post: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16722836&start=15#p7319524

I still have the 4xRM10 IR3 system mentioned in that post , and still use it on a regular basis (mostly weekends, a day or three at a time). As has been mentioned, it does convert electricity into pixels, noise and heat, but I still find it useable in a residential setting.

The InfiniteReality portions of the system started life as part of a Onyx2-based RealityMonster, and I ran the small piece I had as an Onyx2 system for several years . Since its conversion into an Onyx350, it uses significantly less electricity and produces less noise and heat.

It is possible to fit some third party gear in SGI's O3k-era short rack. An 8-core Dell Precision R5400 hackintosh currently lives in mine. The R5400 is mounted on Dell versa-rails - the Dell rails bolted in without issue and everything functions correctly, including the cable management arm. Before the R5400 I had a Dell T114 PowerVault with two LTO4 SAS tape drives in there (also with versa-rails), though the T114 has since been moved to an SGI O2k tall rack.

For now I'd suggest foregoing the bounties until you get a little more familiar with how to search the forum. There have been several in-depth discussions regarding *why* blender and javascript are in the state they're in, and why changing that would probably require bounties with real numbers followed by a fair number of zeros.

If you want to get involved in a "bounty" with less pie-in-the-sky goals, the nekoware "beta" repository has dozens of applications waiting for release to "current" status - some of them for years. All that's need is for three forum members to test each app and give it a thumbs up.

Might not be a bad idea to turn the bounty concept around the other way. In order to request a software build/port, you have to test at least three beta apps and post your findings.

You didn't mention it, so I'll ask. Have you tried a combined "Control T" key press to switch from console to L1 mode?

Without user intervention, L1 mode is transient - it will automatically return to console mode after you run the first L1 command - unless the first command at the L1 prompt is l1 (that's a lower case L and the numeral one). When you want to return to the console a combined "Control D" key press will put you back in console mode.

Depending on your choice of serial terminal, the process should look something like this (I've inserted characters to illustrate the normally invisible Control D key press):

Code: Select all

^d
Escaping to L1 system controller
001c01-L1>l1
L1 command processor engaged, <CTRL-D> to exit.
001c01-L1>

Might also be worth mentioning if you have the new O300 NUMAlinked to the old when all this is occurring.

Not to rain on anyone's petition parade, but SGI can't give away what it doesn't own outright. IRIX is based on (licensed from?) UNIX system V Release 4:
in a white paper titled IRIX 6.5 Technical Brief, SGI wrote: As with all IRIX releases, IRIX 6.5 continues to be based upon UNIX System V Release 4.

In 2003, when the "who owns UNIX" lawsuits (and SCO) were in the headlines , SGI released a letter to the open source community describing the effort SGI had undergone to prevent the release of code to which they didn't have legal rights. That letter (there's a link to the entire document below) included the following paragraph:
Over the past four years, SGI has released over a million lines of code
under an open source license. Throughout, we have carried out a
rigorous internal process to ensure that all software contributed by
SGI represents code we are legally entitled to release as open source.
http://oss.sgi.com/letter_100103.txt

It sounds like the relatively small portions of code that SGI did release as OSS cost them a significant amount of money to sanitize. The cost and effort to do that to other portions of IRIX (not to mention the entire IRIX code base) would likely not make financial sense to SGI (or their stockholders).

If you plan to keep the systems or sell them elsewhere and want help identifying the parts, the SGI: Hardware Forum would be the place.

If your intent is to sell the items here, post them in the Bazaar - Hardware for Sale/Trade Forum. Potential buyers on this forum will be savvy enough to know what they're looking at.

In either case you're welcome to attach a small number of photos, but please resize your attachments - a thousand or fifteen-hundred pixels on the longest aspect should offer more than enough resolution for on line viewing, especially if you crop to show whatever detail you want to illustrate. You can also link off-site photo-hosting services, but please resize those as well so when the link is displayed in-line it doesn't cause readability issues in the forum.

Commercial Software - as the rule mentions, don't offer/buy/sell/trade any software that isn't clearly marked as public domain.

BTW, as Jan-Jaap mentioned, SGI hardware normally leaves the factory clearly marked with a part number, and it's usually pretty easy to google up all the references you'll need. If you get overwhelmed with hits and advertisments, try directing your search specifically to this forum.

Save some money on gas and and have some fun while your at it (the ex will probably *never* ask for a ride, and you haven't lived until you've done a black-ice-induced 360 with a side hack).

If you can afford two payments you could upgrade to a newer model (but stayin' in test drive mode is a lot cheaper). :D

SCSI card readers do exist (or at least they did). Several years ago I picked up a SCSI card reader that has xD, Memory Stick, SD/MMC CF, Smartmedia, and PCMCIA I/II slots. Came in a dual-bay external case with a 40/12/40S Plextor PlexWriter (which was the primary reason I bought it).

Never got around to any in-depth testing on the card reader, so I have no idea if IRIX will play nice with it, *especially* if you're hoping to be able to boot from media in one of the slots.

Just got back from another road trip. Pop quiz for the (easily) bored; anyone able to identify the location?

Hints: Easily visible from a major roadway; the adjoining village was used as a location during the filming of a semi-obscure television series; and it's located within the same geo-political boundary as sybrfreq's childhood stomping grounds.

At the moment I release the CPOP connectors (if used), then chassis fastenings, and slide the card out by an inch or so to ensure all connectors are dis-engauged, but don't actually remove the card. My logic being that the card and connectors are less likely to be damaged either physically or electrostatically by doing this.
Leaving the board partially extracted protects the board, but probably doesn't do much to promote the intended flow of air to cool the system (lots of electrons dancing around in a fairly small space, so Onyx2 Desksides tend to run on the warm side under the best of conditions). On the unlikely chance you don't already know, there are blanking plates (with an attached baffle to ensure proper airflow) that are intended to fill slots left open when a board is removed from your Onyx2 DS. If you don't already have some, Ian or Toby Jennings are in the UK and probably have more than a few available.

While Onyx2/O2k boards are surprisingly tough (I've had several survive even when some clueless eBay seller tossed 'em into a box naked for a cross-county journey that undoubtedly included the drop-kick handling most of my packages seem to suffer during rides in the back of the brown truck), protecting them is a good idea. I have a shelf here dedicated to the storage of Onyx2/O2k-sized boards. It's the right height/depth to accommodate full-height boards (in upright position); I attached a strip of rack-rail just inside the top and bottom of the shelves and secure the static-bag wrapped boards to the threaded holes in the rail.

The location is Indian Head, Saskatchewan; the major roadway is the Trans-Canadian Highway; the semi-obscure television show filmed on location in Indian head was Little Mosque on the Prairie , which originally aired on CBC (and is or was carried by Hulu and Pivot).
tingo wrote: It looks like you are wearing raingear - did you have the same weather as we did in Norway (and Sweden) this July? I had to use my raingear a bit too.
Rained pretty steadily that day, but as a whole we had pretty good weather for the trip. In chronological order the 15-day route took us through parts of North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. 7,422 miles if the the track recorded by my GPS is accurate.

It's not just the orange, I've been politically incorrect pretty much my whole life. :D

Growing up I was a fan of cinematic Westerns and novels, but I was clueless as to the identity of Old Shatterhand, Winnetou and Karl May until I called on Google. I also found that Hollywood did an adaptation of Old Shatterhand in the 60's . Cultural apologies if they "adapted" May as badly as they did Louis L'Amour.

tportales wrote: the problem is the mainboard , i switched it and the keyboard works, i cannot get rid of the mainboard what can i do to solve it?
What is the part number of the system/main board that works with your keyboard? Per chance are your CT Scanner and/or the specialized keyboard connected to one of the O2's serial ports?

The O2 system board came in at least two distinct variants, 030-1227-00x and 030-1327-00x. There have been a number of discussions here that seem to suggest the 030-1327-00x variant is required in O2s used with certain medical imaging equipment, though none of the discussions I found offer definitive proof as to what what differences were present that necessitated the use of the 030-1327-00x.

Here are a couple of the discussions I mentioned; there are others but none seem to offer a better explanation (the second link includes posts by "mapesdhs", an SGI reseller who may be able to offer you additional insight in to your keyboard/system board issue):

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16726674&p=7350785&#p7350785

BTW, on the odd chance you switched system boards to add a faster processor, you may be able to install the faster processor complex onto the CT scanner friendly system board.

Unless you're running an IRIX install modified specifically to suit Smoke, there should be a number of alternative DCD-compatible display formats to select from.

If you'd like to use the DCD to span your display across two monitors (of equal resolution), look in xsetmon for display formats prefaced with "2@" that meet your requirements.

Don't load a 2@ format if you have only one monitor connected, the single display will only receive half of the signal and may flicker horribly.

If you don't wish use a 2@ expanded display (or for the time being have only one monitor), just select any of the other single-monitor formats (that don't include the 2@ preface) that match your single monitor. If your monitor is analog, connect to the 13W3 port, if it's digital connect it to either of the DVI ports. In either case, all three ports will receive the same single image display.
