The O2 does not have a built in TBC. If you want to use one it would be as an ancillary device.

An eBay search for "TBC" turned up several pages of results with prices starting in the two-digit range and up.

It's probably already on your Fuel - try running "ep" at the command line (if you like that, try "bongo"). Reasonably complete installs usually include ep, it should also show up a one of the screen saver selections (the screen saver version of bongo is Octahedra).

Can't answer that (mostly because it'd be a CDiH before I install anything with stoner in the name). :D

For what it's worth, I've had the most first-time's-the-charm success building formats when the recipient provided EDID info for the target monitor. For anyone who'd like to eliminate the middle man from the vfo creation process, there's a template to create a vfo source file from EDID info in this post: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16727386&p=7357543&#p7357543

jmestrada wrote: I tried the EDID method on my Octane2 with no luck. I'm guessing either I did something wrong or this monitor just isn't going to work.

Am I trying to do something here that just may not work? This monitor has a native resolution of 1600x1200@60Hz. The graphics card is an Odyssey (V8)

The first generation of VPro/Odyssey graphics boards (the V6 and V8) suffer from a flaw that won't allow the use of display formats that have a pixel clock that falls between 109 and 193MHz. Unfortunately the pixel clock for a 1600x1200_ 60 display falls into that pixel clock black hole. That's also why the vfo you created doesn't appear in xsetmon.

If your monitor will accept a 72 or 75Hz refresh rate that might bump the pixel clock high enough to work. http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/VPro#VPro_ ... esolutions

An alternative for the V8 would be a 1920x1200_60 display. The pixel clock for most 1920X1200_60 displays is safely on the far side of V8's black hole.

While it doesn't rule other issues with the PS, the click when power is connected is expected behavior.

If you haven't already resolved the issue, another area to check would be the the array of contacts where the system board mates to the front plane. Broken or bent system board-to-front plane contact pins might also produce a seemingly dead Octane.

uunix wrote: I know need to work out how to get different resoultions of my two monitors.
Unfortunately having each channel display a different resolution is a no-go as far as the V12/DCD hardware is concerned. If you open xsetmon and scroll through the list of display resolutions, you should see several prefaced with "2@" (such as 2@1600x1200_60). Those are intended for use when a DCD is attached. 2@1600x1200_60 would output two 1600x1200 displays and result in a 3200x1200 desktop.

Here's an example of the output of /usr/gfx/gfxinfo -vv with a 2@ display format:

The issue has been numerous times over the last few years. Here's one: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8536&p=69371&sid=0acd2b06815dd857d5eb4e1d538d9c79#p69371 (or just try a neko-search of "open source irix").

If you have the OEM cables that from from the "TMDS Video Output" ports on the DG5/TVO (in the G-Brick) to the matching ports on the VBoB, and those cables happen to be labeled with an SGI part number, could you post those part numbers?

Might be worth taking a look at how your default route is set. Yours is a fairly frequent complaint, and far more often than not the underlying issue turned out to be a missing/incorrect default route setting.

The default route setting for your Octane can be checked or modified from panel #3 of the Modify Network Settings GUI:

Toolchest > System > System Manager > Networking and Connectivity > Modify Network Settings:

    Panel 1: Descriptive Overview
    Panel 2: Primary Network Interface -- Enable
    Panel 3: Default Route -- Enter the IP address of your Router.
    Panel 4: Disable (or enable) IP forwarding -- Disable (unless you have a specific reason)
    Panel 5: Set DNS name server entries -- Enter the IP address(es) of your ISP's DNS server(s)
    Panel 6: Specifiy host resolution order -- Use "Files - DNS - Files" or "Files - DNS - None"
    Panel 7: Confirm your settings -- Review and OK
Panel_3.jpg
If the IP address of whatever serves as the router in your network doesn't appear in the "Default Route IP Address:" box, enter the address and check "Add Default Route".
You can safely ignore the references to slip and ppp and admonitions that the default route should be removed when no longer needed. They weren't intended for someone running a simple home network.

Was asked to help with creating a display format tailored to a Dell U2410 24" 1920x1200 LCD monitor.

Rather than just supply the compiled code, I thought I'd share the underlying process. To do this on your own you'll need to have VFC installed .

First the source code for the format (there's a template and instructions in this post ):

Code: Select all

/*
1920x1200 Format for a Dell U2410 monitor using EDID information obtained from the monitor's firmware
*/

General {
FormatName = "1920x1200_60-U2410";

FieldsPerFrame          = 1;
FramesPerSecond         = 59.95;
TotalLinesPerFrame      = 1235;
TotalPixelsPerLine      = 2080;
ActiveLinesPerFrame     = 1200;
ActivePixelsPerLine     = 1920;

}
Active Line {
HorizontalBackPorch     = 80 pixels;
HorizontalSync          = 32 pixels;
HorizontalFrontPorch    = 48 pixels;
}
Field
{
Vertical Sync =
{
{
Length = 1.0H;
Low = 0.0 usec;
}
repeat 6
{
Length = 1.0H;
}
}
Initial Low;
Vertical Back Porch =
{
{
Length = 1.0H;
High = HorizontalSync;
}
repeat 24
{
Length = 1.0H;
Low = 0.0 usec;
High = HorizontalSync;
}
}
Initial High;
Active =
{
repeat 1200
{
Length = 1.0H;
Low = 0.0 usec;
High = HorizontalSync;
}
}
Vertical Front Porch =
{
repeat 3
{
Length = 1.0H;
Low = 0.0 usec;
High = HorizontalSync;
}
}
}
#if 0
postprocess
{
dump edge;
}
#endif
Cut and paste the source code into your favorite IRIX text editor and save the file as 1920x1200_60-U2410.vfs . *If* you're building a format for VPro graphics and want to use the command sting provided below, also place a copy of 1920x1200_60-U2410.vfs in usr/gfx/ucode/vfc/vfs/ .

You can build the format with:

Code: Select all

vfc -a ascii=1920x1200_60-U2410.info -c chip=/usr/gfx/ucode/vfc/rules/VPro_Chip.def,board=/usr/gfx/ucode/vfc/rules/VPro_Board.def -o 1920x1200_60-U2410.vfo /usr/gfx/ucode/vfc/vfs/1920x1200_60-U2410.vfs
Regardless of what your browser might think, that command string is a single contiguous line.

VFC will place the analysis ( 1920x1200_60-U2410.info ) and the complied format ( 1920x1200_60-U2410.vfo ) in the directory you were in when you ran the command (typically /usr/people/<insert your username>). If you want your newly created format to appear in xsetmon, place a copy of 1920x1200_60-U2410.vfo in /usr/gfx/ucode/ODSY/vof . Alternatively you could change your location to /usr/gfx/ucode/ODSY/vof *before* compiling the format. In either case though you'll need root-level privileges to copy or create a file in that location.

The - a ascii=1920x1200_60-U2410.info portion of the command line tells VFC to output an text analysis of the format. You can safely omit that portion of the command it if you prefer, but I find the results useful/interesting:

Code: Select all

1920x1200_60-U2410.vfo:
Total lines per frame:   1235
Total pixels per line:   2080
Active lines per frame:  1200
Active pixels per line:  1920
Frames per second:       59.9502
Fields per frame:        1
Swaps per frame:         1
Pixel clock:             154 MHz, period = 6.49351 nsec
Hardware pixel rounding:  every 1 pixels
Line analysis:
Length:                 2080 Pixels, 1 Lines, 13.5065 usec; (line 0)
Frequency:              74.0385 KHz, period = 13.5065 usec
Horizontal Sync:         32 Pixels, 207.792 nsec; (line 32)
Horizontal Back Porch:   80 Pixels, 519.481 nsec; (line 32)
Horizontal Active:       1920 Pixels, 12.4675 usec; (line 32)
Horizontal Front Porch:  48.0001 Pixels, 311.689 nsec; (line 32)
Field Information:
Field Duration:           2.5688e+06 Pixels, 1235 Lines, 16.6805 msec; (line 0)
Vertical Sync:            14560 Pixels, 7 Lines, 94.5455 usec; (line 0)
Vertical Sync Pulse:      14592 Pixels, 7.01538 Lines, 94.7532 usec; (line 0)
Vertical Back Porch:      52000 Pixels, 25 Lines, 337.662 usec; (line 7)
Vertical Active:          2.496e+06 Pixels, 1200 Lines, 16.2078 msec; (line 32)
Vertical Front Porch:     6240 Pixels, 3 Lines, 40.5195 usec; (line 1232)

You could do the same thing for pretty much any monitor. If you want to build a format for something besides VPro graphics, you'll need to change the 'chip' and 'board' definition files and related path statements to match your graphics hardware. The chip and board definition files VFC uses for other (supported) graphics hardware are located in /usr/gfx/ucode/vfc/rules .

Not to split any unnecessary pedantic hairs (especially since I've probably misunderstood what you meant/want), but O2k era stuff uses CrayLink cables (screw-down connection attachments), and O3x0/O3k/A350 systems use NUMALink cables (cam-latch attachments).

Aside from the latch the the connection header appears to be the same, but based on bri3d's experience I wouldn't risk cross pollinating Cray/NUMALink cables and systems. After he attempted to link them with a CrayLink cable, the serial numbers on both of his gigahertz O350's disappeared . Aside from the potential for differences in the pin-out, NUMAlink cables have the ability to transmit L1 data (including serial numbers the linked L1's assigned to master/slave units); since Craylink-era hardware predates the L1 controller, it's likely CrayLink cables don't.

Like all of the rest of the behind the scenes stuff at nekochan.net, providing free mirrored nekoware access to the rest of us is strictly a volunteer effort.

dclough was kind enough to have stepped up to the void when our last primary mirror went mia; he's provided that service to the nekochan membership since 2012.

dclough hasn't logged into the forums since October. He may be temporarily preoccupied with things that actually pay the bills, or other circumstances may have arisen that may have more permanently trumped the time (or hardware) he has to offer us.

In either case, at this point I can only express my appreciation to dclough for his efforts to have provided that service to *all* of us.

Are there any PCI or XIO2 expansion boards in your problematic Tezro? If there are (and you haven't already tried it), you might see what effect removing everything but the IO9 (and one pair of DIMMs) has on the issue.

MrWeedster wrote: i dont have a working installation of irix for ip53 on some disk to try
Any IP35 system disk will do in a pinch. Fuel, O300 or O350. You'll likely see some complaints about missing or changed hardware but it should get you far enough to aid in diagnostics. You'll almost certainly have to delete/regenerate ioconfig.conf, and if you have an IP35 system available, I'd strongly suggest using a cloned copy - ('cause the host system likely won't be happy with the disk after your Tezro has left footprints all over it).

That's for you to decide, but I will mention it's a bog-stock Pentium III clone in a painted-blue-and-gray off-the-shelf-case.

Earlier in the thread, MrWeedster wrote: Ran? Well, after booting her up for once and seeing everything is working, theres even the original irix installation on the disk. I already got a plan regarding quieting the baby down. The fans were laying there for weeks to get built into the tezro, and so i started replacing the fans .

After 6 hours soldering i finally got everything back together. But something didnt work out quite well . Switched her on, wow, nice and almost unhearable....
But after ten seconds or so i got an error in the L1 display: "VRM not ok, vcpu #1...." Damn...

So it worked when arrived but not after you changed the fans?

Never messed with the fans in a Tezro, but other IP35 systems like the Fuel and the O350 *don't* use standard fan wiring. There's photo that illustrates the differences in the Fuels fan wiring at the bottom of the The IP35 (Fuel, Tezro, O300, O350) Hardware Aggregator . Might be worthwhile to take another look at how you wired the replacement fans.

Your Tezro, your call, but my unsolicited advice would be to reinstall the original fans and learn to accept the the Tezro fan noise as just one more over-engineered artifact from the golden age of SGI workstations. Even with the stock fans Tezros tend to run on the hot side, so if lowering the volume also lowers air flow, in the longer term the result might be a Tezro that's dead quiet..... permanently.

Without picking out anyone in particular (I've had my share of WTF moments too), the idea that simple forum interface overwhelmed guys who routinely master obscure operating systems and hardware (in a number of flavors) brought a smile to my face.

Noscript - 2.6.8.29 seems ok but higher versions fail to install, so beware the offer to upgrade that appears from time to time. I've not tested with all higher versions, these certainly fail :
2.6.8.31, 32, 35
2.6.9.5, 10

Interesting, because I'm running one of the NoScript versions you mention, 2.6.9.10, on four separate IRIX systems. NoScript 2.6.9.10 is the most current release as I write this.

All four are running FF 3.0.19 from nekoware.

Anyone else running NoScript under IRIX care to report which version they're running?

Quite some time ago I found two Extron RGB 202Rxi(s) in a box of stuff that came with an Onyx2 I picked up as surplus. I've never used them, but according to the info silkscreened on to the bottom, they will translate SoG to separate H&V sync and composite sync, and also does audio. Probably used to connect the video and audio from two computers to a projector, tho I don't see why it would also work if connected to an (analog) monitor.

The description printed on the bottom says "The RGB 202Rxi is an analog computer-video interface with 300 MHz (-3dB) video bandwidth and Advanced Digital Sync Processing (ADSP). It accepts two computer-video and unbalanced stereo audio inputs. It features one RGBHV/RGBS/RGsB output and one balanced line level, stereo audio output."

They look interesting, but I never had the opportunity to put them to use or test how well they work.

MrWeedster wrote: Missing of dev.sw64.lib and dev.sw.lib
They are on the Dev Libs. I tried five different dev lib cd dirs i downloaded from all around, but then the following appears:

dev.sw64.lib and dev.sw.lib and all what it installs is incompatible with base.eoe.sw and have about 50 conflicts.
I also read in the base 6.5.30 overlay cds, but that changes nothing

If the search hasn't already taken you there, this post by SAQ might prove interesting (the thread is titled "MipsPro install conflict with dev.sw64.lib"): viewtopic.php?f=7&t=16728239&p=7365945&#p7365945

Back before the lease ran out I was going thru JOTC at Fort Sherman (Panama, as in Canal Zone). Once in a while we'd run across bananas while humping thru the jungle. Since the gov't supplied alternative was usually Lurps, we'd occasionally stop for a pick-yer-own snack. Was doing just that and felt something on my foot. Looked down and found a tarantula big enough to cover the whole toe of my boot. Instinctively kicked to get it off my foot, and it flew thru the air and hit my buddy right in the back of the neck. Right about the same instant the tarantula made contact somebody else hollered "damn that's a BIG motherfuckin' spider". Up until then would have never thought possible to go from a standing-still-peeling-a-banana to ten-feet-away-and-half-naked in so little time. Never could convince my buddy that it wasn't intentional, and as far as I know, his nickname is still Spiderman.

As long as your discussion doesn't involve buying, selling, trading, hacking or offering commercial software, have at it.
guardian452 wrote: I should track down another one this year, I really miss it. Dunno if I should hold out for fuel/tezro. More speed would be good but Octanes are soooo nice...
Since I moved mine from the desktop to a position in a rack it doesn't get the love it deserves. I can remotely fire up the other stuff in there via L2, but the Octane suffers from the out-of-sight-out-of-mind-and-you-gotta-push-the-button-to-fire-it-up syndrome.

I didn't catch it in your hinv. Is there a particular video hardware option board you're trying to capture video with?
