For the Swedes: SGI Origin 2400 at ETA - Page 1

Hi

I noticed that the annual ETA auction has a four rack Origin 2400 system for sale this year:

Prices are usually agreeable.

If anyone gets it and don't want all four racks, I need some spares for my Onyx2

Well yes, I'd call that agreeable.

Nope I didn't get it.

But during the comming months I'll assemble my Origin2k/Onyx2 and there will probably be NUMA-cables over. I'd love to trade for a ktown/xtown pair.

Someone put a LOLbid of 1$/rack and now his wife is shouting at him
To accentuate the special identity of the IRIS 4D/70, Silicon Graphics' designers selected a new color palette. The machine's coating blends dark grey, raspberry and beige colors into a pleasing harmony. ( IRIS 4D/70 Superworkstation Technical Report )
If someone did indeed land that for $4 they got the bargain of the century!

Not to split any unnecessary pedantic hairs (especially since I've probably misunderstood what you meant/want), but O2k era stuff uses CrayLink cables (screw-down connection attachments), and O3x0/O3k/A350 systems use NUMALink cables (cam-latch attachments).

Aside from the latch the the connection header appears to be the same, but based on bri3d's experience I wouldn't risk cross pollinating Cray/NUMALink cables and systems. After he attempted to link them with a CrayLink cable, the serial numbers on both of his gigahertz O350's disappeared . Aside from the potential for differences in the pin-out, NUMAlink cables have the ability to transmit L1 data (including serial numbers the linked L1's assigned to master/slave units); since Craylink-era hardware predates the L1 controller, it's likely CrayLink cables don't.

It's good that you clarify. What I have is the CRAYlink cables that was originally used with the system.

Thanks for the clarification. Indeed, I'd need Numalink cables for my Altix, which are the latch-type. I still have Cray link cables on stock, but fortunately never thought using them with the Altix.

At $4 I could have afforded the shipping
If the thing isn't on fire it's a software problem.

How many Numalink cables do you need? I can send you a few for the cost of shipping.

Also, I have NUMAlink cables available...

Wow, so many NUMAlink cables out there ! :D

Actually, I'm missing 2 of them for my Altix. The shortest would be OK, since I only have 8 modules.

Well, after a lot of things belonging in category "other" (including no internet) I now have found the time to come here and answer any questions about the system you are talking about. :)
Thing is it wasn't me who "won" the bidding, it was a friend of mine who found that he "cannot be bothered" with these machines any more. He thought that he was bidding on scrap metal and parts but the auctioneers said that it is mostly working, 52 of the 64 CPUs are still working.
It also turned out that the knowledge of getting these monsters to work was something we did not have, Nor the power capacity.

so... any suggestions what we should do with these monsters? (except cleaning them up which I've done)

/H
Well the killer question was - did you really only pay $4 for the whole system? :)

Well, if there is some cool CPU's (R12k-300 and higher) in them I might be interested in a few nodeboards.

/M
If I can't fix it I can fix it so it can't be fixed.

Hi

Me, bjornl and Lars (unsure if he is a forum member) were close to putting in a bid for the system. We only wanted parts so we passed in hope that someone else would get it and use it.

Now that it doesn't seem to be that way we are still interested in parts. I want rack parts to complete my Onyx2 rack. The others wanted CPU boards and possibly whole modules. If the CPUs are fast and plenty enough I want that too.

The other to lives in Gothenburg and Malmö respectively. If you live nearby pickup shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks :)

Edit: Well if you want to get rid of them that is. Not sure what to do with them if you don't want to run them. You could easily scale the system down to something that draws less than a kilowatt if you want to play with IRIX. The system scales nicely all the way down to 2 CPUs. You can also try to sell the racks individually. There should be enough in there to make several complete systems.

Yes.

Well, the bdding started out at 10 Kr ($1.2-ish) and my friend jokingly accepted that bid. Then another friend also thought that it would be fun to at least have bidded on the thing and said 20 Kr... My first friend was kind of caught up with it all and said 30... and then there was a silence.
Sold! here you go.
He texts me with a picture and says 30 Kr! and I go "wow, what a bargain, you gonna bid?"
And he replies: no, no no I have won! for 30! I need to get them out of here!....

$130-ish later they are safely in storage at another place. waiting.
