Check out www.polarhome.com they (or rather, he) offers free accounts on multiple platforms and has an Indigo2 I think. Not sure if you can get 1GB though... but ask, the admin is a nice fella.

If I were to put a number on it, probably around $2000 per year. The SDSL package I use allows self hosted servers and is pretty expensive at $280 per month, but I do use it for other things too. Power costs are fairly significant for the O350s as well.

If you're just looking to start a web site and aren't as hardcore about running your own hardware at home, I'm sure you can do it for much less at a hosting facility.

Holy smokes, a decent ISP seems expensive in the states. I guess it goes up a bit when you want a fixed IP and run a lot of traffic, but still.

Getting a PDP-8 or 11 to drive these are not done in jiffy. Getting the parts when you have the opportunity is not a bad idea.

Well, it's not a matter of low interest. Me and Bjornl are very eager to get these racks but there is the slight problem of bringing them home. As I've been up to lysator and brought home two O2k racks (with car and trailer) I know that it isn't a walk in the park. Also, it's a 700km roundtrip from where we live.

As it is cold and unfriendly right now it would be very nice if we could get the chance to get them when the weather has changed toward more spring-like.

So, the interest very much exists.

/Matt

I see, I misinterpreted. Unfortunately there really is no time :( These racks are living on overtime already. But now it looks like Bjornl will get one rack, a fellow in Växjö will get one and I will try to rescue the other two.

Anyone got any specs whatsoever out of these old workhorses?

They will go to storage :( But I hate to see these machines going into the dumpster. I don't know the details, but it is two systems:

First system: 1 rack with on CPU module and one Graphics module
Second system: 2 racks with four CPU modules and 1 rack with graphics modules.

The CPU:s are not that powerful, I've been told it is the medium speed R10k. The machines have been off line for a while and I have not seen a hinv. The graphics are unknown.

Bjornl will get the first system(which, I'm told, is a bit more powerful CPU-wise). And I will split the other system into one rack with CPU and graphics and the rest.

Neat machine! I thought that tandem computers used three CPU:s so that when a fault occurred, the comparison logic would know which CPU to throw out. Perhaps it's a question of how much you could afford.

What OS does it run, does it require software support for the fault tolerance?

Hi.

A friend of mine has just gotten an offer on some Unisys machines. I don't know the specifics but among them are one "CS7402 single domain" and one "dorado 180 dual domain".

So, he and I wonder if these machines can run something useful. He will probably get them without any disks. Can one install linux or any BSD, or does one need SCO Unix with licenses or some such?

So I've gotten some more information from the admin who has the machines now. It is a Unisys processor system (later versions had Intel CPU's) descended from UNIVAC 1100/2200 series. It is two machines with multiple CPU's configured in three racks(!) and a metric ton (literally) of disk. The disk will be wiped.

So, given the size, the oddity and lack of licenses for OS2200 (which is the only thing it will run), we will probably skip these machines. I will however try to get a tour and maybe nab a CPU-board for the coolness factor.

I totally agree with you. Unfortunately the price was not for the lot but for one individual system! Multiply by the number of systems, reduce by some hard bargening, crying, yelling and begging and that's what I paid. I initially wanted one system only. But the idea of having multiple systems to get components from to enhance the one system I intend to keep in the end was just to tempting. I am pretty sure I will not have a good return on investment in the end. :D

I see :) a lot more then.

Off the top of my head I have four or five vaxstations, three microvax 3X00 (where X is 4,5,6 I think), a VAX-11/750. A handful of alphastations and an ES45. A bit more than I can handle at the moment :)

I know that I don't need to add my own machines to Deathrow, I would join to get a reference system and some help I hope :) But the machines could maybe be added to the cluster using the HECnet bridge.

I've gone down the route of even phoning people who have cool stuff. Some times people are happy when I offer to take their stuff, some times they don't answer. I try to be polite and not call to often or at inconvenient times. Some people need and even like to be "pushed" into getting things done others not. Hi

I feel somewhat stupid, but this is actually my first time trying to install IRIX, so be nice :)

I have a teal Indigo2 R4400 300Mhz with Extreme graphics. I want to install IRIX using a 6.5.22 overlay set and the 6.5 base set using the serial console. When I first booted and selected "2. Install system software" and selected the local CDROM it complained about a missing system on partition 8. I figured the disk had some junk on it and cleared its partition table on a PC. When I try again I get an error about missing partitions on the disk. I think the CD is good since I could use it to clear a root password on another IRIX system.

What am I missing?

How exactly? A PC's partition table is totally different to IRIX.

I just used cfdisk under Linux. It complains about an unkown partition table format and ask if I want to start from scratch, to which I answer yes and then writes the empty table to disk.

Seeing as you are using a serial console (well done) can you dump the output from the startup?

It's hooked up to a vt320 now, I'll hook it up to something else tomorrow and dump the whole thing.

Are you able to start a miniroot, sash or fx?

Nope. Unsure how I would do that though, can I do it from the monitor?

They look pretty awesome! I you find a Crimson you can at least "convert" it to a Jurassic Classic.

How many Jurassic Classics were made btw? 300 ?
