Tandem Non-Stop. - Page 1

The first thing to do when undertaking any project is to create a big mess.

Then wonder which CPU board goes where...
Kinda hoping that these are R10Ks...
Even though there are two CPUs per board they both execute the same instruction with the same data and the results are compared, any differences causes alarms. Thus a quad CPU machine is actually operating as a dual..

a. Sounds like a Jet Fighter taking off..
b. I am missing one of the drives.
c. I have no way of talking to it yet..

Nice one Pymb. Looking forward to progress with it :>

I like the simm's. They look almost as large as the ones out of a DEC SPIM box or a HP9000 G-Class. Hawt.

So.. 2 cpu's? only 1 cpu card? Spec? :) :)

I believe the spec at this stage is two CPU boards with two locked-stepped CPUs in each... effectively a dual CPU machine.
Looks like 512Mb RAM. 15 4Gb disks RAIDed.

More research is needed..

Neat machine! I thought that tandem computers used three CPU:s so that when a fault occurred, the comparison logic would know which CPU to throw out. Perhaps it's a question of how much you could afford.

What OS does it run, does it require software support for the fault tolerance?

No. two CPUs are in lock step on the same board, if there is a mismatch between the two the whole board should be replaced. Only two CPUs are required for this. Like the Onyx2 there is two CPUs per board and this machine has two boards, unlike Onyx2 and Origin2000 this has 4 CPUs acting like two.

I believe that the OS is called "Tandem NonStop UX"...

Since this is a newer looking machine, I think you don't have to write your software to specifically be fault tolerant.

One CPU board on one side with the black handle two of each I/O board in the middle and the other CPU board one the other side, again with a black handle..

If anyone has documentation on this machine please let me know... Cheers.

basically correct. this system is termed 'pair and spare'. when an unrecoverable error is detected in one fault domain (the pair of lock step cpus's), there is a remaining fault domain that probabilistically should remain fault free (another pair in the system). you can read up on the very, very, basics here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fault-tolerant_system . a couple if issues with a design like this is determining a reliable method for comparing circuits. the method requires single or multiple detection circuits to compare the outputs of two fault domains. if there is a mismatch in output, both domains are declared failed. the limiting issue with doing this with high speed processors, is three-fold:
1) the more complicated the detection, the more apt for the detector to signal a false error reducing the reliability of the method.
2) high speed events require local synchronization which can increase the error detection latency beyond useful delays. this reduces the speed at which processing can occur.
3) most processors use probabilistic techniques like branch prediction to increase performance. this introduces arbitrary differences in the execution path of the pair of cpu's and thus a different set of observable events.
these three issues reduce the viability of the technique beyond a certain processing rate.

2. Sorry if I am blogging in the forum, Pete.

The basics in wikipedia I kinda knew but thanks anyway.
There are some more interesting concepts like worm-hole routing but you need much bigger configurations for that.

I might have some access to some documentation, not sure if it is the correct model or anything..

that was intended for other people. if you knew enough to identify the relevant fault tolerance technique, you should know that stuff already.

you don't need the machine to learn about that stuff...

True, I don't need to put my hand on a stove to know that it is hot ... but programming and systems engineering things I learn sticks better by practice and application. Stepping through an actually functioning compiler under a dbx taught me far more than "The dragon book", Al Holubb's "Compilers in C" and the rest of my compiler bookshelf... and the functioning compiler we wrote in final year of university was more than a decade ago.. I could read about hypercubes, craylink, ccNUMA or I could read about such things and build a 24 CPU Onyx2 and 12 CPU Origin 300.. Kei-ye ma?

so, knowledge about programming a fault tolerant system and knowledge about systems engineering derived from having a representative system are two different things.

with respect to programming, i suspect you may learn some things, or perhaps not. it depends on how the system exposes the fault tolerance to the application level, and thus provides a way for faults in the application programming to propagate through the system as undetectable faults, or compromise the integrity of the fault tolerance of the system. my opinion is it is a poor design that allows either, and thus the only insight would be derived from missing functionality that if implemented would provide a basis exposing ways to defeat the system.

on the subject of systems engineering: having done fault tolerant design for the enterprise space for a long time, i'm pretty confident saying that 'having a fault tolerant system' provides only superficial insight into fault-tolerant design, and the the best way to get insight into such a system employing said techniques is to read the literature (which only gets you the theoretical background) and/or learn how to do the design work and get experience in the practical aspects of fault tolerant systems design.

in a hardware fault tolerant architecture, much about what provides the fault tolerance is not exposed in terms in control, or observability except on a diagnostic, or retry level. both of which should only be accessed in a privileged state otherwise they provide methods for defeating the fault tolerance. They are generally not provided in general documentation since this often provides a way for competitors to generate FUD.

i suppose though, like any determined person that if you want to spend a lot of time to figure out how it works then you'll find something out. surely having the relic in front of you helps in this regard. so, please post away!

Is that a 1850R in photo "tandem3.JPG"? If it is and you need any <free> parts let me know. Got one here that with fairly decent specs that's gonna go the next time they do an electronics recycling drive locally. It's in running order and all of the parts are good <max RAM, RAID controller, dual processors, dual power supplies 3xUSR Courier PCI modems, etc>. I just don't have the room to keep it.

Thanks. The 1850R came with the Tandem. The guy who I got the machine from said that rack has been sitting in their server room and he thought it was "part of the whole deal".
He also added that he walked past it everyday for the last two years, in wonder of it.
I wonder how long it had been decommissioned for.

When I worked a company that Motorola spun-out in a management buy-out and then was later absorbed into Rockwell, the Tandem was separate and didn't have a 1850R near it that I recall. Some middle manager got to play CEO of a listed company for a few years and then retired with about $100 million from Rockwell.

I haven't fired up the 1850R yet.

Edit: I fired up the 1850R it is a dual 550MHz with about 512Mb and Windows 2003 Server. I have no password for it and no idea what the machine was used for.

I built and tested cables about half a dozen times...

What you need to do is take a RJ-45 cable, file it down so that it fits into the "serial console" socket then solder a DB-25 on the other end. The one with the black electrical tape around one end is the working DCE cable. The other cable is my failed DTE cable.

19200 8,N,1 and put the power into one of the CPU boards and it streams all this "xyz test passed" ... "abc test passed" miles of it.. and fast too... I will try to capture the output.

(No O2s were harmed in anyway during this)

That's a bit hot.

Least either way it's 64bit capable. R4000 and up were, just SGI chose to be pansy's and not use it till R8k.

Nice! Hope the business things finish soon. Eager for next installment. :)

I think it is covered by the following documentation...
http://docs.hp.com/en/522459-007/522459-007.pdf

There is probably a fair bit of work ahead possibly also the Windows 2003 Server for the TACL stuff... Maybe.

Early R4000s had a bug in them that prevented 64-bit operations. Pedantic, but some R4000s were not 64-bit capable.

IP19 can run 64-bit IRIX.

I think I have the I/O cards swapped around in the wrong slots or maybe it doesn't matter.
There are probably a few cables missing.

I will probably try and get this machine up and running over the Easter break.
Need to clear the Administrator password out of the 2003 server and find out what bits are missing first.

I plugged a small ethernet switch in and set a machine up on the same subnet so that it can talk to it...
I get to a login: prompt but no further..
