The collected works of PymbleSoftware - Page 1

My Onyx2 arrived with 4 CPUs and 5Gb of RAM... It now has 24 CPUs and 37.5 Gb of RAM, I have got stuff from North Carolina, the midwest and rust belt states, California, Germany, the UK, NY, and probably another half a dozen places I forget right now. If I didn't buy stuff from other nekochanners, I would still have 4 CPUs and 5Gb of RAM.

It would take something unimaginable for me to buy or sell anything outside of the country.

What turns up on ebay in Australia is miserable.

It is unfortunate that the "don't ship outside the USA" attitude exists, it deprives some geographically challenged people many opportunities.

Very cool hack.

I could ask someone about Bt431KC chips. I have preferred access to some chip brokers in various parts of Asia who claim that they can get anything even Russian ex-military chips (supposedly high spec, extreme operating temps, etc).
I'll have to dig out some business cards. Or wait until I go back in June.

I have built a table of SCSI bus adapters working with IRIX.

http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/ ... _with_IRIX

I have taken things from my hinv posts, and the hardware aggregators.

I take no offense at anyone correcting and/or improving my wiki entries.
I have started all kinds of topics which I wish someone would improve upon.

If you use a SCSI card on SGI machines not in the above mentioned table please add it.

I didn't install anything before, I can hear the hdd scratching a lot now.., I have already had this problem, I reinstalled Irix and it was resolved, but now, I can't reinstall it until I finish to set up a Linux-server to share Irix cds.

How I can repair my system?

Off the top of my head...

Do a "ps -ef | grep xfs" .. This the XFS file system repair program would have lots of disk activity and really slow the machine down. This is meant to run at some ungodly hour.

Check the machines time.
Read up on Network Time Protocol *

man top -- the top command will show what is comsuming CPU and memory resources.
chkconfig sendmail off -- Consumed resources on one of my machines. Didn't bring it to a crawl though.

"hdd scratching a lot now" sounds like something running out of memory and the system swapping pages of memory out to disk. Put more memory in the machine if you can. Turn off all services you don't need. man chkconfig.

I have a book called "system performance tuning" by Orielly and associates, that I can't lay my hands on right now but you should be able to get the ISBN from an amazon search.

Google performance tuning most general UNIX tuning tips apply to IRIX also.

There is a guy I know, we used to go on road trips to pick up SGI gear, he never posts and whenever I see him on nekochan (the whois online thing at the bottom of the page), he is always searching forums..I bet he is not the only one. The wiki is almost nothing but if people start finding stuff there ... and it starts to get used.. someone might post things I want (Forum posts and PMs on the topic didn't help much).... like someone complete the Origin 300 R brick topic... please .

Not much choice for the Japanese. The US and UK had cut off oil supplies because the Japanese were better at raping china than they were. It was the British that brought opium from the middle east into china to enslave the Chinese by the tens if not hundreds of thousands.. The Japanese were also providing payback for Chinese attacks on Japan over the centuries. If forced into a corner by the UK and US take out the main part of the US fleet as a preemptive move seems logical.

Otherwise, I don't understand what you mean by "the link is lost"..

My wife and mother in law occasionally read this also. No idea why. They are both Asian and female and I have never heard a complaint. However this thread is probably not much compared to the overwhelming teenage boy-ness of the site in general. Hamei's Linux Onyx2 driver post, etc... The female posters very very rarely post on this site anyway. The site is mostly about boy toys: computers with occasional references to anime, graphic arts, cars, motorcycles, guns, girls, etc... A group of guys together will be guys.. a group of cats together will shred a couch. It is the nature of things. Although I did think that a few things would not have made the girl in question happy but anyway does she know about the site or whats been written anyway..

Its a mode sense command.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCSI_Mode_Sense_Command

Was a SCSI device driver developer 10 years ago.
Its asking: "send me all your mode pages".. no more than 254 (0xfe) bytes.
The optical drive doesn't have SCSI mode pages... its SATA.
This error is usually not a show stopper.
It shouldn't fail because the device its talking to is not sharing its mode pages.

Rackable Systems Completes Acquisition of Silicon Graphics Assets

Rackable Systems is pleased to announce the completion of our asset acquisition of Silicon Graphics, Inc. Please see our press release posted on our website for further details. With this important milestone complete, I want to personally share with you some of the key elements of our forward-looking vision.

First, our corporate name will be Silicon Graphics International, but we have made the decision to brand the company SGI®. The Rackable name will become the brand for our x86 cluster compute products , joining our other industry-recognized brands such as ICE Cube, Altix, InfiniteStorage, CloudRack, MicroSlice, Origin , and VUE, just to name a few that will all comprise the new SGI.

Second, I believe that the merging of the two businesses gives us the ability to enhance how we service our customers' business and technology needs. More information about our organization, including the new SGI executive management team can be found on http://www.sgi.com/management .

Third, the enhanced SGI resources and offerings will be in a stronger position to be your trusted technology partner. The SGI product portfolio addresses:

* Large-scale data center needs of reduced cost, greater density and lower power
* Cluster computing problems whether they be processor, memory or network constrained
* The ability to solve large-scale data problems through a combination of hardware, storage and software solutions
* Visualization
* HPC environments and the software tools necessary to increase performance and reduce complexity

Fourth, SGI will be better able to service your needs on a global basis. SGI will be operational in over 25 countries with the expertise to deliver products, deploy solutions, provide field service and logistics, and offer custom onsite services enabling industry-leading reliability, availability, and serviceability.

Innovation, expertise and service are at the core of SGI. We built our company by listening to our customers , providing unique solutions for the toughest and most demanding technology and business problems, offering mass customization, and being first to market with new component technology in order for our customers to maintain their competitive advantage. This tradition will continue.

The SGI team looks forward to building on our many successes.

Mark J. Barrenechea
SGI CEO

They canned Origin a couple of years ago.
x86 cluster compute products is all they have, now.
My emphasis added.

Yeah, I think Arti77 and Finnbook were the other bidders.
I know someone was really pissed about losing that auction.
I almost have enough machines and anyway I have a 24CPU Onyx2 already.
Adelaide is too far away for me and the transport people would probably have killed it to bring it here..

um, why is this in SGI:Video.. ?

whether the flags are -mp or -mpio or something else it gives the same error.

Thanking You,
Phani

The Operating system is called IRIX actually.. IRIS is the default hostname..

Those are linker errors obviously you have some version of MPI installed or it would get to the linker stage..
You need to link against the MPI libraries. try a -lmpi or maybe -lmpich on the command line..
Try reading the documentation on MPI.. The linker errors are NOT IRIX specific and would be the almost the same for any O/S you attempted that on..
Whichever version you have.. OpenMPI (not recommended) or MPICH (recommended)

You could add some more information to the MPI section of the wiki when you are finished.

Try putting it on the end of the line.. Linkers are kinda stupid in the way they operate: they don't backtrack and they're not multipass..

Where can I download this code..?

You might want to try putting -Dsgi_mipspro just before or after -Duse_libMPI

My biggest beast is a O200 2x225MHz, but if you need it for a couple days I can fire it up and get you a shell.

http://www.cray-cyber.org has a O2000 as well, not sure exactly what versions of the MIPSpro compilers are on it - info says 7.2.1, but that's pretty old. If that's what it has then it won't support -c99 :(

Cray-cyber hasn't fired the o2000 for like months..if at all this year.. and then it is only available Saturday Munich time.
The desktop cyber is able the only thing they run 24/7 nowadays.

Hello,

when I create a Motif fileselector box, it always has a blue background (see image),

Is that a matter of system settings or do I have to tweak the colors in my app?

The sourcecode is:

#include <Xm/FileSB.h>

int  main(int argc, char* argv[])
{
Widget        toplevel, dialog;
XtAppContext  app;

Greetings,

Check out the X resources file... There should be documentation about it somewhere.. You can set values in the resources for stuff like selector background colours etc, from memory... its been a long time.. I have completed some raw Xt and Xm applications in the past but IRIX has a few little quirks that annoyed me enough to mess around with Qt4 (its in nekoware)

I think there a Motif specific across all widget classes one somewhere.
http://www.le.ac.uk/cc/dsss/docs/xcustom.shtml asserts possible to ascertain some of the resource names which can be used by referring to the documentation on the widget library. The OSF/Motif "Programmers Reference" is useful if doing this for Motif based programs.

You could also do it programatically.

That Fortran code looks newer than the style of Fortran I have written.
I have Fortran books older than I am, and I've been in Software development more than 20 years..

I have started a wiki topic on Fortran if anyone is interested they can update it..

Dig through the nedit source code...
It is available on nedit.org

My old iBook with the Japanese keyboard came from Laox in Aki...
Used to go there on Sundays, 'cos I used to live and work on the other side of town.

There used to be one shop that sold nothing but fillaments for toasters, stoves, kettles, etc..
And down one of the alleyways was an excellent place that sold nothing but robotics bits..

Aki is a bit more tourist centric now...

That is shut down now..

They still are many shops selling heaters etc for cookers, heat guns etc.

The back street areas of Akihabara are as good as ever, OK, the main street and around the station is more 'touristic'

Ginza is within walking distance from Aki... Guys I worked with loved the hostess clubs there... the girls poor whiskey, light your cigar pick lint off your jacket and are really really attentive, while you talk business ... I think we could put it under expenses..

In Hong Kong Golden Square Palace had declined quite a bit when I worked in 1 IFC above Hong Kong station (I lived near causeway bay) there but the basement in Golden Square was the first place I would head...

In Singapore forget SimLim square... its extremely touristy and sells mostly rubbish... Sim Lim Tower however ... I can walk in to certain shops in the basement and source Russian military ICs and on the top floor there is a junk shop from all kinds of industrial control stuff from everytime they close down a factory, its like heaven digging through that... Funan plaza is not bad for consumer/comodity items and there is a bookshop that sells only computer books and nothing else..

Playing devils advocate just to be as annoying as possible... Maybe its not economics but bad or twisted psychology. Their thinking might have been something like "Maybe increasing the price will make buyers think its getting more scarce so I better bid before it gets away" like vintage Rolls-Royces or something... Maybe there is a guide advocating this "raising the price will induces this scarcity mentality".. "Fleabay for the mentally deficient", "Millionaire by fleabay" or something.. I see similar price changes on fleabay AU.

Any software compatibility issues for those software that you are using?

Hope someone can share your experience. Is it time for the snowing leopard?

I went and bought it a few days after it came out..
It did seem slightly faster on x86 but that might have been the effects of hype.
Pity I didn't run a benchmark or something.
I have no compatibility problems with it, but I do have some PPC machines on an older release.

When did the old MacOS emulation die out was it this release or earlier.. ?
