I knew this day would come eventually...hopefully it'll turn out well.

Backrupt and bought..
25 million? Should've bought them myself.

They had seemed like they might make a move back towards workstations - but being bought by Rackable...
it's about time  I guess we can say sgi is dead now, no more limping along on life support.
Just grab your dick then point and click.

Might be good. If the new owners have some imagination and business sense .... You'll have to admit, it couldn't get much worse than it has been over the past decade.

Yeah, right. :D
So I stroll into the NY Southern District bankruptcy court this morning for my internship, and what do the clerks tell me? We've just been assigned SGI's Chapter 11 bankruptcy case ! The first hearing is this afternoon - can't wait to sit in on THIS one!

Unfortunately, I'll only be here for another month, so I won't see this case through to completion, but if there are any interesting tidbits that I can disclose I'll post them here.

Sorry, it may be April Fool's Day, but this is definitely NOT a prank!

I was convinced this was an April fools joke.
But It's actually confirmed on SGIs and Rackables websites.

Well they have been limping along on life support long enough I guess.
Still sad when it is a fact instead of a possibility.

Wow what are the odds of that? Very interesting looking forward to hearing some inside details especially how they plan to come out of this [and if rackable is going keep up sgi's support outlets docs/patches/ etc... ]

[Ps first time I've ever heard of rackable but I guess that's not surprising.]

Fully buzzword compliant

You bet that this time they will bury the MIPS and IRIX legacy so deep nobody will ever find it back.
Now this is a deep dark secret, so everybody keep it quiet :)

Here's SGI's Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition, which is essentially the broad outline of their request for bankruptcy relief, listing their creditors and total debts. Of note are the full list of SGI subsidiaries involved on page 4 and the list of the 50 largest creditors on page 12, which, interestingly enough, includes Barco.

Apparently, SGI's "first day motions" are scheduled for 4:30pm today - I'll sit in on them and write if anything interesting happens.

The interesting part is Rackable has ~300 employees. SGI still has ~1,100 post-layoffs.

Rackable Systems Completes Acquisition of Silicon Graphics Assets

Rackable Systems is pleased to announce the completion of our asset acquisition of Silicon Graphics, Inc. Please see our press release posted on our website for further details. With this important milestone complete, I want to personally share with you some of the key elements of our forward-looking vision.

First, our corporate name will be Silicon Graphics International, but we have made the decision to brand the company SGI®. The Rackable name will become the brand for our x86 cluster compute products , joining our other industry-recognized brands such as ICE Cube, Altix, InfiniteStorage, CloudRack, MicroSlice, Origin , and VUE, just to name a few that will all comprise the new SGI.

Second, I believe that the merging of the two businesses gives us the ability to enhance how we service our customers' business and technology needs. More information about our organization, including the new SGI executive management team can be found on http://www.sgi.com/management .

Third, the enhanced SGI resources and offerings will be in a stronger position to be your trusted technology partner. The SGI product portfolio addresses:

* Large-scale data center needs of reduced cost, greater density and lower power
* Cluster computing problems whether they be processor, memory or network constrained
* The ability to solve large-scale data problems through a combination of hardware, storage and software solutions
* Visualization
* HPC environments and the software tools necessary to increase performance and reduce complexity

Fourth, SGI will be better able to service your needs on a global basis. SGI will be operational in over 25 countries with the expertise to deliver products, deploy solutions, provide field service and logistics, and offer custom onsite services enabling industry-leading reliability, availability, and serviceability.

Innovation, expertise and service are at the core of SGI. We built our company by listening to our customers , providing unique solutions for the toughest and most demanding technology and business problems, offering mass customization, and being first to market with new component technology in order for our customers to maintain their competitive advantage. This tradition will continue.

The SGI team looks forward to building on our many successes.

Their 4 series Altix still use Itanic... :)
:Indy: :rx2600: :Indigo2: :Indigo2: :Indy: :Indy:
I'm getting a bit sick of seeing the Itanic label. IA64 is actually a decent CPU these days. The orig release was
poor, but not now , despite the delays. At 1.66GHz, the Itanium2 is perfectly capable of being 100% faster than
a 3GHz XEON 5460, and it can beat the 4.7GHz Power6 on some codes (depends on the task; for others, it's slower of course,
but its performance is remarkable given the low clock).

If the current IA64 was a poor performer, then the harsh nickname would be suitable, but this is simply not the case.

i7 is clearly better though, so it makes sense for SGI's next shared memory system to use the i7 XEON.

Ian.
The one thing I'm most impressed by in all of this is that SGI (the outgoing one) managed to find a company to purchase it which actually shared one of the key competitive differentiators SGI had in the marketplace: Rackable, like SGI, don't put any bloody prices on their website .

Is it really so difficult for these companies to download a copy of OSCommerce, Freeway or whatever and knock up a pricing matrix? If I want to buy a server, I want to buy a server, not engage in "a sales process". If Rackable can't offer that, I'll just click on through to another vendor who can offer that for me.

Utterly farcical.

I love my itanic, the name makes me laugh and I love it
