Not to state the obvious but did you try using Gnu Make? [aka gmake] some stuff will not build with any other version of make.

-Mike
man crle its the Solaris way.

-Mike
I saw this test floating around another list it is worth having.

https://www.dns-oarc.net/

dig +short porttest.dns-oarc.net TXT

In windows you can use nslookup
> nslookup
> set type=txt
> porttest.dns-oarc.net

All the linux boxes I patched are fine [yeah!] but the Solaris 10 box I did yesterday is still poor [it did ask for reboot so as soon as I do that I hope it fixes up.] You can try the nslookup under IRIX to see if your server/workstation is ok.

-Mike
"IRIX? Never heard of it." Says the SGI salesman. :)

-Mike
Have not been in this position yet but the cool Wiki guide says CPU

So take out the system board clean the contacts check everything, check everything again, and then again. :)

Wow what are the odds of that? Very interesting looking forward to hearing some inside details especially how they plan to come out of this [and if rackable is going keep up sgi's support outlets docs/patches/ etc... ]

-Mike

[Ps first time I've ever heard of rackable but I guess that's not surprising.]
Was this the latest greatest version of the script?

http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=11322&hilit=clone+disk

If we can get the best copy into the wiki then we can just point at that..

-Mike
:) I know how to edit the Wiki the question is can anyone confirm this was the last version.

-Mike

Added: I know that back in 2006 I used a version of the script when I got my Indy and it worked fine. Sadly I seem to have deleted it. [wtf?]
I doubt you'll be all the happy with the performance of a newer Photoshop but everything else should be fine. Like Porter I still use a Pismo as my only laptop [G4 550mhz + 512mb + 60gb]. It does it's job as web browser, serial console, DVD/Mp3 player, and Wesnoth time waster when I'm waiting for installs to finish in the datacenter. :)

-Mike
Thanks for sharing all that Neko! I love that fact that you moved to an Atom cpu, be sure to post your thoughts on the D510MO if you have the time. You've inspired me to take a closer look at this, as my own AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+ based home server is not getting any younger and I'd love to drop down to the 20-30watt range.

In case we all don't tell you enough you ROCK! Thanks for all the years of hosting Nekochan.

-Mike
Very nice! Hopefully it wasn't raining too hard when you were getting the 24pin converter.

My random comments:
I can't quite see from the pic but the HDdrive [750GB] is under the DVD, I assume the case has just one drive bracket.

Also the only fan is in the power supply as far as I can tell, what do you think of the stock power supply from that APEX MI-100 case? I like the size and layout, I suppose I could go without the DVD drive to get RAID-1 mirrors internally on the 2 SATA channels.

Man I love the fanless CPU idea... So very very tempting.

I picked up a D510MO yesterday at Fry's [they were down to 2], sadly they were out of the case I wanted. I decided to go with a Antec ISK 300-65, that means 2.5" drives but I figured the SATA bus and 7200RPM 2.5 will make it feel plenty zippy. [I'm only running ATA/100 right now]. Hopefully the other Fry's in town will have the case in stock. I have enough spare memory and drives around to give it a good testing before I go all the way and order up 4GB and 2x320GB drives. I post some pics of my rig when it's together.

-Mike
I picked up the Antec ISK300-65 yesterday and started fiddling with it today. You think after reading neko's note about running to fry's to get an 24pin power adapter I would have clued in. :) Nope sure enough I need about 2 more inches on the supplied internal power cable to reach the D510's power slot, and I have the 20pins and could use the 24pins. Trip to Radio Shack and hope they have it rather then the longer trip to fry's again. At least it's not raining [that start tomorrow I think]

-Mike

Opps silly me I just found the other +4 pins so I do have the right 24pin connector but alas it is still too short.
I went to Fry's today and found they only had 20pin extensions, instead I just ordered it off Newegg. Which means I have more waiting to do. :)

I do wish there was a 3rd sata connection so I could use a sata CD + 2 HD, oh well I like the fact that the board still has 2 serial headers and the parallel port.

-Mike
Nice! I got my extension cable yesterday [I always like the speed which newegg gets me my stuff] and I got the a test configuration up. Mine is drawing 20watts up to 22watts under load. Which is about 1/4 what my current rig draws. So that is a pretty darn good. Drive access seems good and I'm going to build out some bench kits to push the little box and see where it breaks down. :)

-Mike

PS - I should add that a standard USB->IDE adapter and a gerneric CD-ROM drive was enough to get it to boot without having to give up a SATA port. Smiles all around that it worked nicely.

PPS - The CPU temp was also only 30C under load with only a single case fan [Silenx IXTREMA 80mm 32cfm 14dBA] I'll probably go with 2 fans in the final setup but it's really quiet. :)
I'm not sure why anyone would doubt what the bill says? Not sure how other places handle it but California has multi-tiered billing and when hit tier 3 and 4 [SDG&E has tier 4] the price really jacks up. Arguing with fact is rather silly, remember Neko was runnning O350 x2 with numalink. http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=16717825 ..... Enough said.

I ran the apache bench this morning I like it.

Centos 5.4, the httpd.conf was out of the box I think Max Clients is 150 on RH/Centos I rarely have to tune that.

I stuck a second case fan, the temp are silly

M/B Temp: +90°F (high = +7°F, hyst = -38°F) sensor = thermistor ALARM
CPU Temp: +64.4°F (high = +176°F, hyst = +167°F) sensor = diode
temp3: +61.7°F (high = +176°F, hyst = +167°F) sensor = diode

I'm pretty sure it a least 68F in the house so... :)

I like 6C break out the winter parka there might be snow in SF. The mbmon seems about right I checked the BIOS after the last reboot and the numbers are about the same. Still 25C is 77F the CPU is pretty amazing. The heat sink is cool to the touch.

Just checking to see what anyone else is doing. I rolled out a good old tar backup solution several years ago for a client on AIX 4.3.3 but I thought I'd revisit what I've got there and was trying to remember why I avoided "backup" using - to pipe the output to dd.

Anyone care to comment on backups under AIX 4.3.3?

and why should a backup to an nfs drive be a problem?

Other then having never used the mksysb and savevg commands before probably none. I think I went with what I knew off hand but I'm wondering if I should roll out a new backup. The big question is always how to restore, someday I'm sure this box will die and there will be wide spread panic :) . On that day I hope to remain calm and unroll the restore.

So now I have about 17 working burns of Disk 1 of 6.5.22 - anyone want one? ;)

When you have to be absolutely, positively, undeniably, irrefutably, sure you've got a spare :)

Glad it worked out.

I finally cut over to my D510MO last night. So far so good, the noise reduction alone was worth it I won't see the kind of power savings Neko got but still it's about 60watts less then old server. I did have run a parallel port and serial port out the back of my little case and I added an Intel e1000 pci card into the free slot that runs to the DSL bridge. My server is also the router, print server, samba server, nfs server, you name it. The only trick part was cutting over from UW-IMAP to Dovecot we have mailboxes dating back to 2000 so I had walk carefully but other then a few users needed to replace IMAP Prefix Path things went well.

Only thing I need to do is unplug the Blue LED on the Antec ISK case, it's way too bright at night. :)

Thanks for the inspiration Neko! I think this is going to work very nicely.

-Mike
Drives are always the weakest link as we all know. Sounds like a good choice getting a RAID controller for it. With only 2 SATA headers it's all a matter of choices with these little beasts. I went with extra ethernet interface because it's the head of my network. However I did go software raid on 2x320gb 2.5in seagate drives [5 year warranties of course]. Hopefully the drives will last the 4 or 5 year life cycle of this thing.

-Mike

PS - Did you notice there are BIOS updates? The latest is 4/10/2010 I've been following the BIOS releases because there does seem to be a BIOS bug with regards the the Winbond w83627thf sometimes has the wrong CPU read out and the fan control reads zero even though it's running full speed. Not the end of the world but was hoping Intel would fix it.
I really only need the usb CDROM to boot the install :) , so it worked out fine. So for now it has no optical at all, but with samba and nfs the files are just a few clicks away something that does.

[My last server didn't either but that was not from lack open ports. I'm reminded that a few years ago I got a call from a client telling me the mail server didn't come back up after they had a power outage, so I had to drive down and check it out. Turns out someone had stuck a Windows XP disc in the cdrom at some piont and when the thing rebooted. :) So I handed him the offending CD and disabled usb and cdrom booting the BIOS. No more trusting someone not to do silly things.]

-Mike
Hey your drives are bigger then mine, I've got drive envy! ;P

-Mike
I missed reading your posts R-ten-K welcome back.

I too have soft spot for the SS20. The memory max is 512MB [8x64mb] you can use the later 128MB sticks from the early ultra's the SS20 will see them as 64mb. I run 2x200mhz ROSS hypersparcs but I also have 2x75mhx SM-71. Solaris 9 is usable on it but I forward the X window to a new machine.

Openstep sparc on runs with 1 CPU and as SQ noted SuperSPARC only. So if you want want go with a single SM-71. I also install NetBSD every few years to see how it is working.

-Mike
Hmm I have 4 in mine that I had put in by mistake from a larger pile of memory and they worked. Next time I open the bugger I'll check the part numbers for clues. [Which ROM where you on by the way? I've only used 2.25 and 2.25r]

-Mike
Sort of a left field comment but it needs to be able to get a serial console for all the old sgi/sun gear and cisco stuff. Then it's all I need in the field.

-Mike
Like porter says Kermit or Zmodem or something of that nature. Assuming you have a terminal program and a serial cable to run between two machines. That's what I did when I finally put my Tandy 1000TL down back 97' I pushed all the files out this way over the modem up my shell account UCSD. Sure it's slow but it works.

-Mike
WOW! They look very clean indeed.

Here are some other items from the bible:
1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from
neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think
would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness - Lev.15:
19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is, my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to ki ll him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

7. Lev.21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16.
Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I'll bite.... :)

Although Christianity gets the conversation going I think some of the ideas that are being expressed are not limited to that. Really I see this as a question of Faith vs Reason, or more specially Blind Faith versus Rational Thought.

Your "fishing dream team" example is sort of right out, that plays into the human need to win with surety. That's a different set of problems and devolves into greed nicely.

The other stuff can fit into the Blind Faith category, or as you say "slavishly worship". I do not want to stray too far into Economics because eventually you end up in politics which we are trying to avoid. But generally when ideas become dogmatic then the problems start. Inshrined Economic beliefs are just like religion in that way. If you leave no room for flexibility, then you've screwed your system because ultimately all system have flaws. If man made it, man can break it. We've all been there with Programming, thinking we have built the most solid piece code that turns out to have a stupid bug in the middle of it. The echoing 'DOH' can be heard across the world.

Obviously I can only speak for the slice of society I see from where I'm standing. Your quote of "No different..bible but a hell of a lot more popular nowadays" is not true. Most people in America have no economic ideas or even knowledge, but 70% say they are Christian and 40%+ say creationism is true. That's a problem.

I'll throw in my two cents: I think the reason religion is important to most people is because they cannot tolerate the thought that the universe is a random statistical fluctuation, to which there is no point...

"hot" is quite an understatement. Sun even sold a special fan assembly to use with the ZX in multiprocessor SS20 to prevent them from melting...

If you google around there used to be some descriptions and pics of various ss20 + ZX out there with crazy setups to keep them going. Certainly the extreme end of the heat range for the form factor. [But damn I love those old pizza boxes.]
