Well.... If I could find a drive sled for my DS-20e...

.... I wouldn't be as interested.. There are a limited number of Alphas in the world..
One day emulation will be the only way once everything wears out..

anyway i'm sure it's the worst :D

no, worse than that would be running intel binaries under emulation (and profile/rewrite as Alpha machine code on the fly) on an emulated Alpha.

In the 1990s I did Visual C++ on Alpha and that was painful, running Intel binaries on the Alpha was worse because it would profile your code and rewrite sections of it as Alpha machine code, so your programs were supposed to get faster the more you ran them... but it seemed horribly slow... a pentium 90 was kicking the 200 or 300 MHz Alpha's butt under WindowsNT

I've got it working with Tru64 5.1 but without the license PAKs it is single user only.

I might have to update the firmware to put VMS on it and get my hobbyist licenses...

I think I remember something like that. Was funny at the time.

Pymble- did you run the original Alpha x86 (MS) emulator or DIGITAL's FX!32? My FX!32 experience is limited (I do have a copy somewhere, but the AS2100 I had NT on died), but it looked like a very strong approach to the problem - writing out pretranslated blocks of code to create a semi-"fat-binary" so after several runs very little of the code needed to be translated "in-flight".

I ran FX!32 at the time and wasn't impressed... Concept was great but my experience with it found it lacking in my opinion...

I have just started getting reacquainted with Tru64... somethings are good..
/etc/securettys as a file to specify which terminals you can log in as root was a good idea.. It is also in OpenBSD..

Tru64 is an interesting breed. Most Unices have some parts that are advanced and some that are a bit ... anachronistic, but Tru64 seems to have more of the extremes. TruClusters at one end and the only current UNIX that still uses COFF on the other end (there are other examples of both - fortunately AdvFS has been stable for the last few releases).

Your VMS licenses should come through within a day of applying, or at least they do for DECUS/Encompass members. The disks take somewhat longer. Enjoy - VMS is frustrating at first , but then you learn to like bashing your head against it :) It's very different from UNIX, and unfortunately while I've seen about 2-3 different "UNIX for OpenVMS users" guides I've seen zero for going the other way.
BTW - You might as well start looking for a second machine to start a VMScluster with.

ADVFS is now open sourced...
http://advfs.sourceforge.net/

I don't find VMS frustrating... I did a diploma in the 1980s went into the workforce and then went to university after a few years in the industry... In the workplace, in the late 1980s, I used VMS on a VAX 11/780 ... we had some ongoing contract on something written in DIBOL at the time.. Went I got to university we did VAX assembler on VMS and all the MS-DOS and UNIX students really struggled and I said... "I remember this". Recently I used VAXmans VMS box (pfafner) and wrote "hello, world" in VAX assembler... reliving my uni days.. ;)
( I also did a little TSX-11 and RT-11 on the PDP 11/23 ... Queensland rail were still using PDPs in the late 1980s )

I am not sure about starting a VMScluster... I have another Tru64 box.. its an AlphaServer 800 5/550 running Tru64 4.0d.. I could put VMS on both and I could set up a VMScluster but I have other things I am interested in as well and a limited amount of time...

I have some 13W3 cables that only work on SGI and not SUN and some that work on both but most people report SUN cables won't work on SGI. I have the opposite experience to the most commonly reported.

Try replacing '#include <stdint.h>' with '#include <inttypes.h>'.

Thanks, I will try that.

I also tried a gcc build and immediately ran into the missing Poco library problem.

1. the board in o2 x was a 1997 board with what I found to be a 300mhz "2000 sgi" processor
2.the board in o2 y was a 1997 board and 200mhz "1997 cube-bug" processor
both had 4.14 PROM versions

so I switched processor y into board x , installed 6.5, upgraded overlay to 6.5.22, which upgraded the PROM to 4.18. upon swapping the x processor back into the x board, it all works!

so as it seems, PROM version seems to dictate what processor version works in what board...

Might be wiki material ...? In the O2 topic maybe..?

I guess we will never know what the missing ones might have been if they had been released..

That thing with the SW/HW IPs had confused me a little. If someone wants to clean up the table and fill in the blanks..

Nice work. I've updated it some. Feel free to join in, all -- the water's warm! :)

I have messed with the wiki topic a little, I hope that is it an improvement..

I noticed something...

For a certain range of time, even numbered machines are always "lower-end of the era", ie workstations as apposed to servers, which explains some of the gaps at least. Some missing odd numbers are times when they designed more workstations than servers.

Its all true.

The mandatory party thing and hostess clubs, the screaming and office protocols ... actually most of the blog ... I agree with, totally... they exist.. I however just went with it.. None of it bothered me... at least not to the extent of the blog writer..
I am not a vegetarian, I didn't mind smoking.. I drank with colleagues at any request. I went to hostess clubs with the team.
I ate with the team often. I was accepted as much as an outside person could be. The Chinese guy and myself were still on the outside on somethings, but generally not that often.

Actually there are a lot of vegetarians in Japan... Just claim to be Buddhist, if you don't want to eat meat.

In 1986 I did some RPG-II on a System/34 ... I have played with the Hercules mainframe emulator (which I ported to IRIX in a previous thread)

I have done AIX device drivers (1997) and a fair amount of AIX work.
I once was in a team of 6 programmers who ported more than a Gb of source code from Tru64 to AIX at a Telco.
Early AIX was woeful. A real nightmare. Modern stuff is alright.

What version is the cutoff for "early"?

I dunno... maybe 3.x or 4.x ...?

I was doing device driver maintenance in 1997 on AIX, HP-UX, WindowsNT, Tru64, I completed the Solaris version... There was a group of about 20 application programmers whining about AIX probably before 4.x...Lack of POSIX compliance, system calls didn't work properly, non standard this, non standard that.. whinge bitch moan... They all did. Thinking back, remember this English guy complaining that some system call failed when called from his code, didn't return an error indication and didn't set errno and he had no way of determining if it succeeded or not...

I spent a few months on a single driver bug on AIX and it was my least favourite UNIX at the time.. There was some real weirdness in the driver code and working on the driver everything seemed primitive and painful to work with on AIX... The other UNIXes seemed so much easier at the time..

Recently, in the last few years I have been messing about with AIX 5.3-003 and like it on my 7025-F80.

AIX is about the only UNIX I think might have any kind of future.

These are only my recollections of the work I did in the past and the 2nd hand accounts of people I worked with....

I used DECstations and VAXen at university also.
I had a DECstation 5000 running Ultrix but something major failed in it, it was a loooong time ago.

I didn't mind Ultrix, I did have problems with it at the time that I can recall on ... VAX or MIPS versions..

Then wonder which CPU board goes where...
Kinda hoping that these are R10Ks...
Even though there are two CPUs per board they both execute the same instruction with the same data and the results are compared, any differences causes alarms. Thus a quad CPU machine is actually operating as a dual..

I like the simm's. They look almost as large as the ones out of a DEC SPIM box or a HP9000 G-Class. Hawt.

So.. 2 cpu's? only 1 cpu card? Spec? :) :)

I believe the spec at this stage is two CPU boards with two locked-stepped CPUs in each... effectively a dual CPU machine.
Looks like 512Mb RAM. 15 4Gb disks RAIDed.

More research is needed..

No. two CPUs are in lock step on the same board, if there is a mismatch between the two the whole board should be replaced. Only two CPUs are required for this. Like the Onyx2 there is two CPUs per board and this machine has two boards, unlike Onyx2 and Origin2000 this has 4 CPUs acting like two.

I believe that the OS is called "Tandem NonStop UX"...

Since this is a newer looking machine, I think you don't have to write your software to specifically be fault tolerant.

One CPU board on one side with the black handle two of each I/O board in the middle and the other CPU board one the other side, again with a black handle..

If anyone has documentation on this machine please let me know... Cheers.

1. The edit in the previous post was me adding the extra photo..
2. Sorry if I am blogging in the forum, Pete.

The basics in wikipedia I kinda knew but thanks anyway.
There are some more interesting concepts like worm-hole routing but you need much bigger configurations for that.

I might have some access to some documentation, not sure if it is the correct model or anything..

you don't need the machine to learn about that stuff...

True, I don't need to put my hand on a stove to know that it is hot ... but programming and systems engineering things I learn sticks better by practice and application. Stepping through an actually functioning compiler under a dbx taught me far more than "The dragon book", Al Holubb's "Compilers in C" and the rest of my compiler bookshelf... and the functioning compiler we wrote in final year of university was more than a decade ago.. I could read about hypercubes, craylink, ccNUMA or I could read about such things and build a 24 CPU Onyx2 and 12 CPU Origin 300.. Kei-ye ma?

Is that a 1850R in photo "tandem3.JPG"? If it is and you need any <free> parts let me know. Got one here that with fairly decent specs that's gonna go the next time they do an electronics recycling drive locally. It's in running order and all of the parts are good <max RAM, RAID controller, dual processors, dual power supplies 3xUSR Courier PCI modems, etc>. I just don't have the room to keep it.

Thanks. The 1850R came with the Tandem. The guy who I got the machine from said that rack has been sitting in their server room and he thought it was "part of the whole deal".
He also added that he walked past it everyday for the last two years, in wonder of it.
I wonder how long it had been decommissioned for.

When I worked a company that Motorola spun-out in a management buy-out and then was later absorbed into Rockwell, the Tandem was separate and didn't have a 1850R near it that I recall. Some middle manager got to play CEO of a listed company for a few years and then retired with about $100 million from Rockwell.

I haven't fired up the 1850R yet.

Edit: I fired up the 1850R it is a dual 550MHz with about 512Mb and Windows 2003 Server. I have no password for it and no idea what the machine was used for.

Is, or are , there [a] good Nekoware, TGCware, OpenCSW, Blastwave , etc. equivalent for AIX open source/freeware? I've so far only come across several, Bull being the more prominent one. But it has very little by the looks of it, certainly for 6.1, or am I looking in the wrong place?

There is one ... I wouldn't say good ... but IBM themselves have one ... I think I started a search at boulder ibm.com
I could find it but I can not get to my RS/6000s right now...
