HP/DEC/Compaq

AlphaServer DS-20e not talking...

I just dragged an AlphaServer DS-20e home and I had an Elsa Gloria graphics card from out of my XP1000 with the dead power supply...

I have been following the guides from:
http://www.compaq.com/alphaserver/archi ... _tech.html

Especially
http://www.compaq.com/alphaserver/downl ... ence_d.pdf

I am getting nothing from the machine, it just sits there with that same blue SRM screen as I see in the AlphaStation 800 5/550 and a blinking white cursor... I see nothing on the serial ports either..

I get no response from either console as per figure 1.12... and yes the DEC VGA card is in slot one as per the manual...

I get no beeps... I get all the LEDs (ie "Starting console") in figure 8.1 of "Troubleshooting" of the above guide
I am running out of ideas...

It has two CPU boards in it and I don't see any empty RAM slots... So it is probably pretty nice spec, just playing possum for some reason...

Well, you have to make absolute sure that you've set the "console=g" variable in SRM through serial console until you can find anything on the screen.

Do you have your keyboard on PS/2 or USB port?

If you have a USB keyboard, try PS/2 keyboard instead. Without keyboard it will default to serial console.

Yes. I have the same PS/2 keyboard that works on the AlphaServer 800... and I waited for like 10 minutes and still nothing.. on either VGA screen or serial console...

I am not seeing anything on the serial either which is what is stressing me more...

Panic over... someone had reassigned the serial port that is used as the console port in SRM (not the default one in the manual but I was sure I checked it earlier) and I pulled the graphics card out of it...

I have serial port access now and I can run diags and check the config...

You know, I was thinking of that right this very evening and thought I should pop in and pop the question.
Good thing you found it already and bad thing I didn't thought of that in the first place.

I've got it working with Tru64 5.1 but without the license PAKs it is single user only.

I might have to update the firmware to put VMS on it and get my hobbyist licenses...

That's a bit pretty :)

The two ds20e's here (Although one has serious problems), one had 7.0, the other 7.2-1.

http://www.compaq.com/alphaserver/firmw ... /ds20.html

MOP or update floppy? I've always had trouble with the floppies.

There's also the *.world cd image they used to publish. Sort of a double-clutch boot with -CURRENT firmwarez for *.machines. That might be easier .. but it's usually a massive download.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/alphaserver/firmwa ... se/v73.zip

Might pay you to have a troll around in the directory.
