The SeattleTimes article:
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/b ... tchie.html

SAN FRANCISCO —
Dennis Ritchie, a pioneer in computer programming, has died at age 70, according to his longtime employer.

Ritchie created the popular C programming language and helped create the Unix operating software. He died a month after his birthday, according to his biography on a webpage of Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs. Ritchie joined Bell Labs in the late 1960s.

The company confirmed his death to The Associated Press but would not disclose the cause of death or when Ritchie died. A spokeswoman said the company was trying to contact his family.

Ritchie is best known for his contributions to computer programming and software. The C programming language, which Ritchie developed in the early 1970's, is still popular. It has gone through a number of upgrades, and it is commonly used for website development and other computer tasks. The Unix operating software also surged in popularity. It and its offshoots, including the open-source Linux, are widely used today, in corporate servers and even cellphones.

Ritchie's biography on the Bell Labs site says that he was born on Sept. 9, 1941 in Bronxville, N.Y., and studied physics and math at Harvard University.

"My undergraduate experience convinced me that I was not smart enough to be a physicist, and that computers were quite neat," Ritchie wrote. "My graduate school experience convinced me that I was not smart enough to be an expert in the theory of algorithms and also that I liked procedural languages better than functional ones."

Jeong Kim, president of Bell Labs, wrote in a blog post Thursday that Ritchie was "truly an inspiration to all of us, not just for his many accomplishments, but because of who he was as a friend, an inventor, and a humble and gracious man."

A small regional Murdoch paper in Australia in a city of barely a couple of million people, http://www.couriermail.com.au/ipad/obit ... 6174426413
and thus, in the obituary pages it was wrote: COMPUTER scientist Dennis Ritchie was born in 1941 in New York City and died in 2011 in New Jersey.

Although not a household name like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, Dennis Ritchie (known to his friends simply as "dmr" his computer user name) was one of the small band of visionaries who between them created the digital revolution.

He was the brains behind both the C programming language and the co-developer of the ubiquitous UNIX operating system, inventions which helped usher in the internet and smart phones to name but a few of the applications which have emerged from their ideas.

The development of Unix was such a milestone, in fact, that it won him a Turing Award in 1983 (the computing world's equivalent of a Nobel prize).

Born in New York in 1941, he was one of the baby boomer cohort which came of age as personal computing took off.

And like many of them, his emergence had as much to do with good genes as it did with good timing. His father Alistair was a leading researcher at Bell Labs where Dennis Ritchie was later to begin his brilliant career.

By the time he joined Bell in 1967, after graduating from Harvard University in physics, it had launched a landmark project called "Multics" with General Electric and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

It was billed as the world's most ambitious computing project and allowed several hundred users to work on the same mainframe computer at the same time a laughably small system these days, but back then unheard of.

Bell was responsible for the operating software and Mr Ritchie was thrown into the deep end, given the task of trying to sort out the crisis the project was in at the time.

After four years of gruelling and expensive work, Bell gave up. Ritchie and another lead programmer on Multics, Ken Thompson, did not.

Realising that they needed to design a much simpler system, over a couple of months in 1969 they came up with what they called Unix.

After scrounging obsolete mainframes to test it on, within three years they had a working prototype up and running.

They also talked Bell into trying it on one of tis big mainframes and rewrote the operating system for this new machine in a language Ritchie co-invented, which he called C. It bridged the gap between machine code and programming languages.

Because Bell Labs' parent, AT&T, was a regulated telephone monopoly, it was not allowed to compete with the then still fledgling US computer industry and so the altruistic Ritchie decided to distribute Unix for free to universities and research institutions.

It became a hit and developed a cult-like following, particularly after Bill Gates developed his own all-conquering operating system.

One of Unix's legion of fans was none other than former Apple chief executive Steve Jobs, who used it as the basis for his NeXT workstation when he was forced out of Apple in the mid-1980s and later for all of Apple's products including iphones when he re-joined the company.

Ironically, after the US government deregulated the telecommunications industry, AT&T tried to close down free usage of Unix.

This generated a now-famous backlash from Unix's fan base and following the efforts of a MIT hacker in 1983 hundreds of amateur programmers came up with their own version which came to be known as Linux.

Despite never achieving any great public fame for his profound breakthroughs (his death, one week after that of Steve Jobs, went almost unremarked in the mainstream media), Mr Ritchie nevertheless was showered with awards.

Among them were the prestigious Japan Prize, a fellowship of the US National Academy of Engineering and the National Medal of Technology which was personally presented to him in 1999 by then president Bill Clinton.

Mr Ritchie had been in poor health for several years after battling both prostate cancer and heart disease.

Mr Ritchie is survived by two brothers and a sister.

The San Francisco Chronicle has two articles, neither of which match the Murdoch paper article exactly. Normally Australian papers just take what is on the wires (Reuters or whatever) and reprint it...

The communist party Pravda, I mean Sydney Morning Herald... has nothing, nada, zip on Dennis Ritchie... It wasn't about the glorious unions crippling the national airline (so the twice unelected somewhere to the left of Karl Marx minority government can nationalize it, comrade) or whitewashing union bosses now members of a extremely socialist federal (and feral) government running up hundreds of thousands of dollars on prostitutes on union credit cards.... so it never happened.

The Murdoch papers are becoming subscription based so the unwashed masses will remain ignorant commie unwashed masses in this country.

I said that linker errors like that are usually from one of two things...

1. library order when passed to the linker. Mutually dependant libraries can link if one is specified twice.
2. libraries or maybe object files not specified for the linker to resolve against.

You have to track down where "std::__introsort_loop" should come from and add the library to the linker flags.

My thought is you are entering brave new territory here. Sorry. I don't think you can put any old fans in there.

Seconded.

I am not an expert here but the Fuel is a workstation of the same era as your Origin 300s are as servers. I suspect that the way things work is that the power supplies of machines of that era (Fuel, Tezro, Origin/Onyx 3xx) have circuits leading back to the power supply and the L1 monitoring. It senses the load or rpm with pwm(*) and the designers knew that load X meant an rpm of Y on the fan. If you found fans with the same electronic characteristics as those NMB Minebea 3110KL-04W-B79 present in the Origin 300s and they fit, you are in business. In the nekochan wiki article on Fuel PSU repair ( here ).

In the wiki it is wrote: Pin 12: This is FANC, it should control fan speed. Read more below
Pin 24 This is FANM, it monitors fan speed. Connect to tachyometer pin on fan:
....
The FANC on pin 12 doesn't appear to work as expected. I expected that the wire would go directly to the fan header inside the PSU, but it looks like its going into one of the IC's, but I'm not sure. The FANC line stays put at +3.3V even when the system if powered down. This might be to low to start the fan from the PSU. Which might indicate that it is just a signal wire to a fan controller in the PSU.. but I don't know.. perhaps a good reason to get my oscilloscope out.

Image

The fuel is merely from the same era. It may not work that way. But I hope I give you the courage to investigate and document.

People here in the past have replaced fans in Octanes and the like merely because they are too loud.

This is an opportunity to learn something about Origin 3(x)0 fans and power supplies and share it as wiki article.

Good luck,

R.

Im not an supacompile guru, so i'm wondering how to set the header paths and environment. I know that specifiying headers in quotes means that the header is residing in the same dir as the source, but when the header is inside < and > symbols it means that the compiler/linker will look for it in system wide predefined libraries ? paths. Eg: #include "mysource.h" and #include <GL/GLwMDrawA.h> ....

Add

Code: Select all

-I /usr/nekoware/include

to the CFLAGS in the makefile.

From memory glut installs to /usr/nekoware/GL/glut/ .. Otherwise do a find /usr/nekoware -name "glut.h" and adjust the -I path.

You will need to add a -L/usr/nekoware/lib to the linker flags as well.

Be mindful of the Forum rules .... IRIX itself appears on fleabbay from time to time as "IRIX diskset 6.5.xx" with xx = 30 for the last edition but other commercial software and cracks like SoftImage, LightWave, MIPS Pro compiler, etc, exists on private ftp sites across the internet, but is not to be discussed publicly here as nekochan is provided free as a hobby by Pete and he really doesn't need legal hassles. Some IRIX software is still supported on vendor sites... For example some in this list ( http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/ ... X_software ) . For free open source software (gimp, blender, etc) take a look at nekoware ( http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/what-is-nekowar.html ) in the 4th section at the top of the forum, hundreds of applications provided your IRIX version is greater than 6.5.21. Older versions of GNU software (~2004) and the like are available at http://freeware.sgi.com/ and a few other places.

oreissig wrote:
btw, you can get IRIX 6.5.22 overlays from SGI for free after registering in supportfolio

This also requires patch 5086 from versions of IRIX before 6.5.22.

Doesn't sound like you're seriously considering that $600 dollar set on eBay, but just for the record last time I asked SGI would sell a complete standalone version of IRIX 6.5.30 AWE for the same price, and the SGI supplied version included 90 days of full access to SupportFolio. Full access to SupportFolio means you could also get a complete set of the restricted-access patches that have been released since the original release of IRIX 6.5.30.

I just wanted to get a legitimate set of CDs so if I had to reinstall my system from scratch I would be able to do so. That actually leads me to another question, my system came with quite a bit of software installed on it. Is there a way me for me to back up the licenses or the local flexlm server so that I won't lose the licenses if the hard drive ever dies?

You can make a copy of the license file. Most (but not all) licenses are contained in /var/flexlm/license.dat. Not all programs follow that licensing methodology, if you're not certain you can open License Manager (from inside Toolchest > System) and compare the contents of license.dat to the list that appears in the Manager GUI. Highlight any that appear in the GUI (that aren't in license.dat) and click the "Get Info ..." button to see where those are located.

Even if you do acquire a full copy of IRIX, I'd recommend cloning the hard drive(s) in your SGI system so you have a ready-to-go bootable backup. That'd save you having to reconfigure/restore your personal settings, user files and licenses - stuff that can easily require more work that a complete reinstall. I clone at least once a month in a three-drive rotation so I always have a good fall-back copy available - more often if I've got something specific I want to protect.

There's a cloning guide in the wiki: http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/ ... ystem_Disk
and another frequently cited version at Ian Mapleson's site: http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/disksfiles.html

Yet again I second the GOBI, recondas'es advice. Cloning a disk is an excellent idea.

IRIX USD $40.00 ... I know nothing about the seller and have nothing to do with the sale
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Silicon-Grap ... _648wt_907

Definitely better than $600.

For reasons unknown its listed on Australian Fleabay but is located in the USA.

Actually, when I started learning it, I loved parts of it and hated other parts of it. Objective-C 2.0 is much better.
The really tricky thing in iPhone or Mac programming is the UI builder and setting the selectors/delegates thing.
UI builder has been getting better over the releases but ask any Mac developer how learning UI builder was.
There were object-orientated aspects of Objective-C that I actually liked, late binding, etc. I still think in C++ and translate but some features are kinda nicer than C++. WIth GCC you can even write Objective-C on IRIX. You can not mix Objective-C and C++ classes such as inherit from each other. Java is number one and I loathe and despise it ... "Java is the worst thing to happen to computing since MS-DOS" wrote a famous industry commentator. I tend to agree but it is everywhere. I don't program much for fun anymore as most of my time is taken up with work related coding. I don't learn a new language, I get handed bugs and then work out what language the offending code is written in. "That is in ruby, I've never written ruby before". "Just fix it". Oskar, I think you would find ruby interesting but not as intellectually stimulating as say gofer or hugs...
I think gofer, hugs or scheme did compile for IRIX but I've not looked at it in a long time.

Admittedly my main focus is on the server with J2EE systems, and it is close to ideal. It just does it's job.

Is there anyone here who has programmed a Smartcard Applet in PHP or Python?

We used to blow up JVMs all the time. Don't get me started on Azul Systems Zing rubbish, I'll just go apoplectic. I really don't like Java.

It's not the most common or versatile language (I don't see anyone writing games in it) but by Jove, it is great at what it does. Mainly aimed at multithreaded real-time applications. Brilliant stuff.

A F-111 fighter jet simulator used Ada in (at least) the avionics buses. That is the only time I've seen outside of university. A lot of the recent military stuff I've heard about is C and assembler on very modern embedded CPUs. I've never really gotten into Ada. But there is a GNU Ada in nekoware.

2. In that "Stop for maintenance menu" choose the command monitor option, Type hinv and see if your CD-ROM is there. You know about SCSI bus termination, etc, right?

If it does make a difference in the hinv when it is connected or not then it is probably properly terminated, etc. Assuming that the media is in good condition and you have the correct CD in the drive, I am running out of ideas. I have never had problems following Ian's SGI depot IRIX install guide.

Someone else here, probably has ideas for you to try.

I got an Octane2 with a V12 installed for next to nothing. Willing buyer ... willing seller ... That is all it takes. A greedy fleabayer who thinks they have something as rare as hens teeth will demand the world even though they know nothing about what they are selling. Another fleabayer will give something valuable away for next to nothing because they also know nothing about what they are selling.

you'd better cross your fingers, because SGI probably has a database of part#/serial# for support purposes, and all your serial#'s (the ABC123 thingie) would show up as V10 parts ...

Maybe, but it also seem that at least some of the pre-rackspace SGI has been dismantled. Some of the SGI staff I've talked to don't even believe they ever sold MIPS based workstations. Weather they would know the difference between a V10 or V12 is up in the air.

But I think there is a difference between V10 and V12 ... Look at the first table in http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/VPro#Features

Oh, ok.
I had already linked to the Jan-Jaap EPROM disassembly topic in: http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/VPro#See_Also

It might be very enlightening for some if this information was collated and added to the wiki...

I have created:

http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/V10
http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/V8

If someone was successful with a hackenV12 we could add something to the HowTo category.

It might have made their customers happier if they'd given the V10 128 megs of memory and put 512 on the V12 but Profit is Our Most Important Product !!

Extremely interesting. :D

Proprietry means commercial. Just a reminder....

For commercial packages, it depends on what you are looking for. I worked on extensions to "Risk Vision" which was run on an SUN e25000 for Basel compliance for managing banks spread of risk. I suspect that is not what you are interested in. The list of commercial software for Solaris is as long as you arm.

I have no idea what you mean by eye-embrace and normally people just choose one or the other software repo like blastwave, CSW, etc..and stick with what is in that.

No, but the OP was "aware" of blastwave, etc and talking about "shareware", which if you never saw shareware (Commander Keen, etc) you might associate with sharing and the whole confusion about "proprietary"... Best to cut it off at the pass before the moderators have to get involved.

I've updated to the latest MediaWiki version this evening but it proved a messy upgrade. In the past it was enough to simply untar the newer version over the old one and run an update script (as per Manual:Upgrading ), but they've apparently shuffled some files around and caused breakage this time around. I've set everything back up under a clean install, but if anyone notices something not working as before let me know.

Thanks for your efforts. I just briefly checked a few pages and it all seems like its all still there.

I noticed this morning that the Tidy extension wasn't set up correctly so I fixed it (it still had the binary location from a past life in the configuration file). The layout of the Main Page seems to rely on broken HTML so Tidy is mangling the appearance somewhat. I poked around with the source a bit to see if I could clean it up, but much of what I tried only made it worse. If it looks like enabling Tidy will be too much of a hassle at this point I can turn it back off, but it's supposed to make things easier/cleaner.

I had a quick go at fixing the popular categories but couldn't fix it quickly so I left it alone.
smj did the reformatting of the main page to the format it was in last, my last update(s) were minor.

hi everyone :)

hmmm was experementing a little with my O2 lately with image formats and this is what i notice.
.jpeg - loaded two halves at a time with a little delay which looks slow?
.sgi - loaded from bottom to top? or either way, with steps but a bit faster than jpeg
.pic - one time loading, very fast!

all formats uses the same picture with 1600x1024 resolution.

does it mean images using SOFTIMAGE format are fast to be rendered because it utilize the ICE? i thought JPEG should be faster coz O2 has a built-in for JPEGs? or its just for motion JPEG?

also, why did the native .sgi/.rgb format was slow compared to .pic from softimage?

sorry for this noob question :)

Not exactly sure but .sgi files I think are uncompressed, Jpeg uses complex compression algorithms and I am not sure about .pic but maybe it uses some simple compression like run length encoding and therefore is quick to unpack. Maybe the code that unpacks the .pic file was better written than the others... Other images have different information density and compress by different amounts. A sample set of just one image is not a good dataset to make comparisons about. Something that is all one colour will compress remarkably and uncompress formats might lose but something really complex with lots of colours might favor uncompressed format more.

Not sure of the question but probably faster as the sum of all parts equals the speed of the whole but then it probably depends on other things like how the images are combined, I don't have the source code and I am not even sure how it is meant to work.

You might like to check out ffmpeg (I'm not sure what the builds for Windows are like). Be careful tho': to be useful with VICE you need to ensure that you use an SGI compatible version of MJPEG.

Have you got the AV card for your O2? If so it's probably easiest to plug a video source into that and capture it: that way it'll be in the correct format. (The VICE can encode MJPEG as well as decode it. I think there was both realtime encoding and decoding for a lot of the codecs, except DV which was never publically released; most DV comes in via IEEE1394 where it's already encoded.)

@ndy

Some times something that is a sub section someone has added is worthy of a topic in itself. I have created a new page with the text of the original page and then include the new page in the original topic. No text is lost but can be included into multiple pages if desired or accessed directly as its own topic.

I wrote a wiki page on how to include other pages inside pages in the wiki:

What video hardware (monitors/input sources/etc/cameras) do you use with your SGI?
This may have been cover in the past but I am wondering what people are using now.

If I recall Pentium and a couple of others made the icons and nekonoko uploaded them into phpBB.

Yeah but that didn't stop you from saying you could use the RAM and rails for your Sun v440 or mentioning your Sun gear in your .sig

When I get some money SGI gear is definitely on the list. At this point I am reading posts here trying to learn so I make the right choice. I am also glad to find a site where I don't have to go through 1,000 posts why Opteron is better than Xeon blah blah blah :P
