Then you need to investigate further...

Open the machine, take photos of the motherboard and post them here or on the wiki...
See if you or other members here can identify where/if the system serial number is stored, buy a new chip and replace it.. It should see the new chip as blank and you follow the steps in the o300 r-brick topic if you can.. It will set stuff from the L2 and you'll probably have to set the module iID.

I don't own an Altix but someone else who knows Altix hardware might step in and help you further.

I think this is new ground or it is at least to me.

Got the firmware updated to 1.62.1 on all bricks..

Stepped through the firmware image in a hex editor and found some undocumented commands, one of which is " let the carnage begin "... executing this command on l1 turned the "security" feature off and reset the system serial to match the other bricks.

Well done. ;) There is an "undocumented" wiki topic and topics on L1 and L2 commands if you so feel inclined.

Thanks, I'll have to see what turns up on fleabay locally in terms of rails for SUN stuff..

I am not looking forward to pulling apart the o300 rack... too much stuff just loose and will have to be reconnected when I am done... might be time to get rid of the origin 200 which I haven't used in ages.

Not good, I think the spring or rubber band of some kind died in the cdrom itself.

Is it easy to replace the cd-reader? Can I just get the same item number and then it's just a drop-in replacement?

Again search the forums, a SCSI CD-ROM is pretty much a SCSI CD-ROM, unless you want to boot off it (then you need something that is 512 byte addressible)...
There were even reports of someone sticking a DVD-ROM in an O2... somewhere... I don't recall where right now.

Easy to replace...? not really.. I broke all the plastics on my O2 with the tray issues and had to glue them back together on mine.... the plastics is extremely brittle..

Mine is a XM-6201TA... I'm not sure how easy it would even be to find something somewhat compatible. What a pain!

Its not the drive its the O2 plastics... and some people use it as an excuse to put a DVD or (Yamaha) CDRW in there.

Wasn't there some basic tools included included in the installation media..?
I think at least 2.8 had gcc as an optional install... maybe from memory 2.6 and 2.5 as well ... I was doing development work on Solaris in those times and never recalled problems getting access to a build chain.

I was playing with my SGI and needed an Irix implementation of getopt_long(), so I got source code from NetBSD and OpenBSD and created a SGI version of it.

I tested an example program of getopt_long() I found in google and all seems works flawlessly :) , except by a one line change. However the behavior is same than gnu's getopt_long().

I got a tar with sources, header, Makefile and test program, it builds with MipsPro in Irix 6.5. If anybody interested, I would like to share this.

From memory there is/was something about this on the MIPS Pro nekochan wiki page.. if not I intended to put something on there at the same time I wrote the section on work arounds or porting or something like that..

EDIT
oh, wait nup.. that was the senenv/putenv thing .. I did have a solution for getopt_long() which I intended to put in a section after ..

I think I did this when porting hercules IBM mainframe emulator to IRIX.. years ago..

Is it me, or is this a duplicate question..? It seems to be in development discussion and video.

Before Win2k we had PAR/PVRs on WIndowsNT machines but I don't remember the brand names... Was a proper production house before turning to effects software. They even offered me an Indy in the mid 1990s for free, because "Windows is the future maaaaan"..

Hey

I used to work with these two guys who introduced me to Be Boxes... I said I need to buy one before Be disappears (and they did, I wish I still had my BeBox). These two guys were ex-poker machine programmers (on Amigas, yes really). They raved and reved about NeXT, I never ever really got it at the time. I was doing C++ work with them in mid-1990s and knew about O-O concepts but with all this delegates, protocols, extending classes without inheritance, it made little sense to me at the time. I got into BeOS and found that fun and addictive, I was always hacking about in C++ with Be API until about the early 2000s, I wrote an article in Doctor Dobbs Journal about BeAPI and BeOS programming. Then all the BeOS clones came out and I grew very skeptical about the Be legacy and gave up, until I came back to Haiku a long time down the track. I stopped AmigaOS programming about AmigaOS 4.1 update 2, when ACube turned on the dealer base and started selling direct to the public, the X1000 was over promised, and never released.

When OS-X came out I tried Objective-C ...

At first I hated it. Really really hated it. I recoiled against what seemed wrong in in the object model and what I didn't understand..

Then I liked it but didn't really have that much of a clue, it was new and exciting and different.

Then (I thought) I really got to know it and hated it passionately.

Then after a long break came back to programming in Objective-C and found it to be fun and addictive. Maybe it should have been called Addictive-C..

My latest offering is
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cricket- ... ?ls=1&mt=8

I have barely one any IRIX or Haiku programming in ages.

If you want to learn Objective-C, learn smalltalk first. Things will make a lot more sense.

That would be me.

I built Hercules-390 3.6... but Hercules 3.7 has been released since. You need to take out all the Linux specific SCSI tape stuff and fiddle a little and it should build. My 16CPU o300 is out of the rack and in pieces ( viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16726601 ) and my Quad 1GHz build Tezro shares a monitor with my iOS build mac-mini and I don't even have the time to build revenue potential iOS apps right now.

I mentioned it a few posts back in this very thread :

Nice! I don't have any cables that work with the DB-25F port A, however, and port B will not output by default. Is there any way to get it to output through the DB9 port? The only thing I have that will fit A are parallel cables if I stuck a DB25 to DB9 serial adapter on the end, and that probably wouldn't work, would it?

DB9 to DV25 serial cable adapters have always worked for me in the past for serial access over a null modem.
Parallel cables are not serial cables... A cat is a cat. it is not a dog... its a cat... If it was was a dog it would be called a dog. I wouldn't expect a parallel cable to work.

I once saw ruggedized military laptops that could be run over by troop carriers, submerged in river water for significant periods of time and the like.
There was also a legend of a PDP-11 being blown up or shot up or something and still functioning..

I had an issue with the Hobbyist program being run by beyond amateurs in Australia, they were complete clowns losing any applications to the program and the like and then there was problems with my using different email addresses for different things from DECUS things a decade or two back, and finally I told them to stick it after the way I was treated. When back to running Tru64... nowadays I am far too busy to even do Haiku or IRIX stuff..

Help again please. From the help you all provided, I was able to get the desktop up once I started the system through the terminal port by starting the system. Unfortunately, I had my cousin over to help me get network going and to also try setting up two screens; bad idea. He knows enough to really F**ck things up. Now I'm back to a system that won't start. I have attached a .pdf that shows what the system shows on the terminal. Can someone send me a list of what to do?

How can I learn more about this system? Is there a book available that shows all commands? I have no background knowledge of Linux or Unix which would greatly help me. Or maybe it's time to go back to school. Or I will just continue to post here and take notes until I figure it all out. And that's going to take a long time. HA

Oh look some book about UNIX or something.. http://m.simson.net/ugh.pdf

You might be expecting it to go into graphical mode and start the X window system. In that case you might want to make sure there is a monitor, keyboard and mouse attached and reboot it and if that fails enter "4" "5" at the menu where you pressed "1" to boot the system to enter the command monitor type "printenv" and make sure console is set to "g" for graphics. If that is what your problem is...

Edit : typo, I meant "5 Enter command monitor"

Has anyone tried Shake (any version) on Mountain Lion...???

I have a Mac Mini i7 8Gb and I was thinking about doing YouTube videos as well as LaTeX'd PDF documents for my apps. I think I have Shake 3.5 on the Quad 1GHz Tezro, that is one option, I also have Shake 4.x running on a Core2 Duo, which I think was running Snow Leopard last I looked. (x= 0 or 1 if I recall). But I do most of my app development on the Mac-mini.

BTW, about Facebook...
I also have a page for the company account I do app development on... ("PymbleSoftware").. https://www.facebook.com/pages/PymbleSo ... 2124265954 If I get a certain number of likes it becomes separate or something from my personal page or something like that so I think I need people to "like" it. If you feel so inclined that might help me out. Thanks.

Also make sure that the relevant parts are marked as "on" when you run "chkconfig"

'man chkconfig' will tell you how to use it.

Yeah forgot about that. From memory, a chkconfig by itself as root will tell you everything that is on or off.

but i think it should be ALOT easier than this...afterall its one simple command to write in shell...
is there no "autoexec.bat" type of file somewhere that would be able to run this simple command as a root-user at the end of the boot sequence? :?

Its called run level scripts.

Try to learn the first thing about UNIX. First the firmware of the machine loads a kernel file, the kernel file loads and runs init, init fork()s itself and runs deamon processes in the run level scripts...
Each exec is basically a fork so the init process is the parent of everything.

This is basic basic UNIX concepts.
http://techpubs.sgi.com/library/tpl/cgi ... /ch03.html

Here is what you do with your limited knowledge, stick the commands in one of the run level directories, get sick of the machine and stick in the cupboard for a couple years, then take it out and give it to someone who doesn't have the same network and the and thus the share your are trying to automount won't exist on the network so the machine hangs like 5 minutes or longer at boot and thus is "broken".

I need someone to look at some text (in Japanese) and tell me if it makes sense or if there any errors in it.

I might be able to use a native French speaker to look at some French text a little later on too..

I'd just like to confirm the results of translate.google.com and maybe gengo.com

I'd like to avoid whatever is the opposite of engrish.com

Cheers.
