Sun Ultra 5 not accepting keyboard

I purchased an Ultra 5 the other week and finally got a keyboard that I paid too damn much for (it was all I could find) and it's being rejected with the following error:
Code:
No keyboard support found
Can't open input device
Keyboard not present. Using ttya for input and output

The keyboard seems to be working fine, so it seems to me that the issue could be...

  • This Axil type 5 is not compatible with the system
  • The U5 is messed up
  • The keyboard is DOA (which seems unlikely, it beeps and self-tests numerous times before the screen turns on with the error)

What could it possibly be? I've literally been waiting about 2 months to get my hands on and use this rig. :(

From the OK> prompt (get a null modem cable if you don't have one already), run set-defaults then poweroff (power-off potentially). Then unhook the serial, make sure the keyboard is connected then power on.

Nice! I don't have any cables that work with the DB-25F port A, however, and port B will not output by default. Is there any way to get it to output through the DB9 port? The only thing I have that will fit A are parallel cables if I stuck a DB25 to DB9 serial adapter on the end, and that probably wouldn't work, would it?

DB9 to DV25 serial cable adapters have always worked for me in the past for serial access over a null modem.
Parallel cables are not serial cables... A cat is a cat. it is not a dog... its a cat... If it was was a dog it would be called a dog. I wouldn't expect a parallel cable to work.

Yeah, the 25 to 9 adapter is usually a good way to go.

I spent a while googling the potential for using it the way I suggested the other day and came up with nothing even related, so I pretty much knew the answer before I asked, but it's all I've got that fits at the moment, so it was worth a try at least.

Is there any non-software way to force them to output to the second, more conventional serial port that I can connect something up to?

Yeah, you need a null modem cable, with the right adapters. No way around it.

I object to "more conventional" being used to describe a serial port with a DE9 connector, as compared to one with a DB25.

More conventional at least in my mostly PC-compatible collection.

Ordered a DB25 gender changer. Thanks, guys, can't wait to see if they were smart enough to wipe this bastard or not...
