I got rid of my PPC equipment in preperation for moving. I had a PMG4 400MHz Sawtooth that I overclocked to 533MHz with a 133MHz FSB using a 450MHz CPU. I also had a 1.25GHz eMac and a 2005 2.0GHz DC PMG5 with 6GB of ram. I loved that G5. :( Couldn't care less about the G4 equipment though, they were just play machines. The 1.5GHz PowerBook should be still plenty powerful for web surfing which is what notebooks are meant for these days, so if its cheap enough, then yeah its not a bad idea. :)

I am not much of a modeler, but that ray traced Tie Interceptor was pretty wicked. :D

Pulled the source, installed glib to satisfy prereqs, and am now kicking off a build. Will report in. Mind you if anything goes wrong I'm pretty much screwed since I never really got past chapter 1 of K&R :P

K&R is a little overrated these days. I learned C in college and K&R was definitely the standard, and I bought the book, but I never read it. The only book I read was a C pocket reference book published by Que in the 80s. Any time I got stuck, I just pulled out the pocket book. I still carry it with me everywhere. :)

Actually, it came out today. :)

Yes sir. It has been out for a week or so now though. The most excellent news is the zfs flash archive support. Makes my job easier. :)

Was outside several days last week, tried to use the Assist's Macbook. Could go to nekochan and login. Then as soon as I tried anything it looped me right back to the login screen. This is an Intel Macbook, about 13." Whichever OS X came on it a year ago, using Safari.

Anyone else have this happen ? No trouble with Fireflop on either Windows or irix. Cookies on, Javascript on, nothing I can think of that would do this ?

You should turn on console or the Safari developer tools and see what they say. Also, what version or OSX / Safari? 2.x and 3.x aren't nearly as web compliant 4.x.

Terminal.ap is in: Applications -> Utilities (so is Console, which you can use to view system.log etc).

I did see, and I did fall in love, but my iMac is still new and awesome. I think I will wait 4 years for another. I am super in love with the thought of have 4 ram slots instead of 2 though. I am waiting to put 8gb of ram into mine because 2x4 is expensive, but 4x2 is super cheap.

Whatever the problem is, it's certainly not universal. I run 10.6.1 with Safari 4.0.3 and haven't seen any login loops.

None of my 10.5 or 10.6 machines have this problem either.

Umm. Well. I couldn't find out much about it, other then its compatible with itanium cpus and was used for cryptography. Can I ask you how much they want you to pay? The power bill will likely make the purchase not worth it... :\

Hmm. I was thinking, if I ever saw a Jurassic Classic for cheap, I would get one. This doesn't look like one (didn't see the signature) and looks like rough shape, I will probably pass I think.

The phrase is "ended up", it was a little weird reading "landed up" so often in that...

Do you have the cpu specs? The p series are all POWER cpu based right? That could be a neat machine, I miss my old PMG5 (not nearly the same, though I think POWER and get teary).

Are you doing forwarding to run it? I am a little confused looking at the ubuntu ui...

Anyways, that is definitely a project worth being proud of. I wonder if it got the speed increase too making it usable for old Octanes and such.

Same. That is unless I do the math and assume that the sleds are still worth $60 each, then we total up the four (two assembled and what looks to be two disassembled) sleds in this Crimson and we get four sleds for $240 and to boot a Crimson for $10. :)

Us Canadians wouldn't though. Freight shipping isn't exactly cheap...

You could try and repair the CD. There are polish kits you can buy and I have had some good luck in the paste with them.

Unfortunately they have problems with the delivery dates - if they are unable to ship it this week I will have to cancel it and reorder as I am going away for two weeks...

There seem to be some problems with the screen on the big Macs according to the Apple boards, and people also recommended to reinstall OSX from scratch when getting delivery of the machine for better performance.

I saw some reports of the wireless module causing slow downs. There is a guy on MacRumors that has had his iMac replaced 3 times and eventually Apple told him there should be firmware patches soon (or something to the tune of).

The BIGGEST computer I was ever allowed in a living (mine or otherwise) would be my PS3. No computers allowed on the main floor, everything in the basement or in the office. Frankly, if I was your Dad, I would be a little upset too knowing the crap you have in your office already.

I am ashamed, but my IBM hardware runs Windows as I use it for my arcade machine. Well, here is a read out anyways...

IBM xSeries x336:

RAM: 3GB DDR2 ECC
DISK: Hitachi 36GB 15K RPM 320-SCSI x 2
Sound: X-Fi Extreme Audio
Video: ATi Radeon VE (7000) 16MB
OS: XP Pro
Arcade Stick: X-Arcade Dual
Games: LOTS.

No, the JDS version did not change in 1009, and wont change until Solaris 11 (the SXCE builds you are using now have the version).
Stuff.
Solaris 11 SHOULD have XSun, and all of the other Sun proprietary goodies that are in Solaris 10. The OpenSolaris builds will never get it because of licensing, atleast thats how I read it from Sun.

PDP hardware, wow. You are living the dream man. ;)

I went and bought it a few days after it came out..
It did seem slightly faster on x86 but that might have been the effects of hype.
Pity I didn't run a benchmark or something.
I have no compatibility problems with it, but I do have some PPC machines on an older release.

When did the old MacOS emulation die out was it this release or earlier.. ?

If I recall correctly they moved rosetta to the optional installs on the DVD.

@OP: I run 10.6 client and server, it is definitely an improvement over 10.5. I don't regret making the switch (especially since I got rid of my G4/5 towers).

Yes, it's not installed by default, but the system is smart enough to download Rosetta from Apple the first time you run a PPC-only app.

Oh, yes. I remember now. :) I don't have any PPC specific apps anymore so I have yet to be prompted.

Oh, well, there you go. According to Wikipedia it says it is on the CryEngine. Well then. <insert_foot>mouth</insert_foot>

I have the last gen 2.66 20" iMac. It is pretty awesome.

I hear there are lots of issues with the 27" coming right out of the factory. You may do better to get a refurbished 24" with the ATi 4850 (same option as the 27"). The only downside is that you get 2 ram slots instead of 4.

recondas wrote: They recently built new Apple store not far from me - I stopped in to kick the tires on a few of the new Macs right after it opened. I was primarily looking at the Mini, but got some seat time with an iMac. I was impressed. <tho I might like to run that 27" panel at a higher resolution>.

If I was gonna buy one I'd probably go with an extended apple care plan. I had a dual 1.42 MMD that ended up having just about everything in it replaced during the extended warranty period, so in that case the apple care plan was well worth it <tho the power supply did die a couple of months after apple care ran out>.

Actually the new Mac Minis are very impressive with the dual display and 4GB RAM.. My girlfriend's Mini is the last generation with 2.0GHz cpu and 2GB RAM (same platform as the current, just slower cpu). It plays The Sims 2 very well at 1680x1050. I plan on getting the server version after christmas (for work purposes more then anything). They are definitely the most bang for your buck these days (coming from Apple anyways).

Did I mention my disgusting amount of PC games and that I don't like to pirate software?

I find that ports isn't all that stable which it comes to version changes (either OS related or the software it self). If it still works for add / remove, I usually have it remove everything that is installed, then remote ports and reinstall.

I have a little bash jobie I quickly did a couple incidents ago...
Code:
port installed >> pins2
for i in $(cat pins2|awk '{print $1 $2}')
do
port -f uninstall ${i}
done

Though I am sure you could rewrite it as "for i in $(port installed |awk...", I just never tested it or bothered to change it.
