Sun Blade ram compatibility - Page 1

I have two dead Sun Blade 1000s (I found that processors were screwed in too tight). I want to get my hands on a Sun Blade 2500, and I was wondering if the Blade 1000 ram would work in it.

Also, any ideas on what to do with these? Anyone know if the DVD drives will work in an Octane2 (Toshiba I *think*).

I only have SCSI CD drives in my Blade 1000 and the same model works on SGI.

What to do with these..

*In* an Octane2? Not unless you do some metal work. But if they're SCSI DVD drives they should work fine *with* an Octane2 <which is what I think you actually meant anyway>. :D

The blade 1000 ram is compatible with the 2000, but not the 2500. The IIIcu and IIIi cpus have different memory controllers. The 1500/2500/v250/v210/v240/v440 etc, all use DDR 1 PC2700 ECC Registered.

They are dead, so I am thinking I will just part them out or sell them both for ultra cheap in the DC Metro area.

PC2100 in my 2500 board if I remember correctly but it is standard ECC DDR, super cheap and easy to come by

Thats true, sorry. I had a typo. 2100 is what the manual calls for. I do have 2700 / 3200 mixed in my 2500 at the moment though. :)

How much ram and what are you asking for it? Just today I finally got off my duff and installed OpenSolaris on my SB1K. For some reason I thought it had 2G, but it's only 1G.

A word of warning--pay attention to your OpenBoot revision and the CAS latency. I believe all of these PC2100-based Suns are only spec'ed at CL2.0, which is a bit harder to find than the CL2.5 PC2100 ECC that's all over.

I've had little trouble actually running a Blade 1500 with CL2.5 PC2100 with OpenBoot 4.9.x, but upgrading to 4.14 or higher will prevent the system from booting on anything that's not CL=2.0. I had to downgrade from 5GB to 1GB for this reason :(

Strange that you did get more problems when upgrading openboot, I have had a 2500 since new with 16GB but at that time I hade 8 GB from Crucial and 8GB from Dataram which did not interleave fully, only the Dataram did work(CPU0) but after upgrading Openboot last summer the memory banks interleaves as they should which probably means that Openboot now properly reads the DRAM info from the DIMM.

Hey, folks!
I'm interesting what is practical memory room limit for Blade 2500 RED one?
I presume that 2500 both Red and Silver share the same components (at least I/O), and the fall of memory size in twice from Silver to Red (from 16bg total (two 2gb quadpairs) with both cpu utilization in Silver to total 8gb (two 1gb quadpairs) in Red) as referred by manual is only OpenBoot program limitation, or even manual says configurations for which Sun was really responsible, am i right? Does anybody checked it?

P.S.: Can anobody also tell me about what specifially dictate the CPU difference in Red and Silver? Device recognizing in OpenBoot FCode?

I have a strong suspicion that you can load up a Red 2500 to at least 8x2GB. I've put 2GB sticks in my Red 1500 and gotten it up to 5GB (2x2048 and 2x512) of working, addressable memory despite the max being listed as 4x1024.

I'm pretty sure the only difference is a jumper on the motherboard. I would be very surprised if you couldn't put a 1.6GHz processor in a red's motherboard, switch that jumper setting, and have everything work fine. This is why I also suspect a red motherboard will take the full 16GB.

I would guess that the reason for Sun said 4.1024MB in Red was due to there was only 1024 DIMMs at the time.

Both my 1500 and 2500 silver have 8GB per CPU, 1500(8GB) and 2500(16GB)

You should either downgrade or upgrade (google through the patches descriptions and forums) the Openboot.

I've got the last error (after i changed the memory with another sticks). The problem is that my old Openboot version suports only SPD 0.0, while the new sticks have SPD 1.x.

Can anybody help me with getting the OBP 4.9.5 or higher for the SB2500 so i can overcome this issue?

I have not found any cheap ECC PC2100 RAM in 2G sticks with 2.0 latency. Like somebody else said the 2.5 seem a lot more common. But they are also not cheap. Where are you guys finding all this hardware bounty?

eBay stuff comes and goes but have not found this ram cheaper than $15 a gig and that was for cl2.5. That works out to 240 bucks for 16G of used RAM in who knows what kind of condition. What's a good price on this stuff?

Somewhere there is a list of what RAM speeds and latencies are supported by what OpenBoot version. The SunFire servers came with PC2100 but the later OBP allowed you to go higher.

The guys are using 2.5 CL sticks when on proper OBP version.

P.S.: Yay! 2 Gb PC2100 CL 2.5 sticks are going for 8 EUR per stick on eBay nowdays.

I realize you can use 2.5 latency but it's slower than the spec'd ram. These boxes are fast for what they are but there's no reason to handicap them if you can still find CL2.0 sticks. Ok, 2G for 8 EUR is a good reason ;)

So... An SS20 recently came into my possession :D

and a single 143Gb SCA drive.

I am thinking I need extra cooling to be on the safe side here... as the floppy drive is likely to never be used I imagine I can use the power from there to run extra fans. Ideally i can see need for 3 fans... one between the PSU and the MBUS. One by the drives and one to pull air out on the opposite side of the PSU dunno if the floppy wiring can run all that. So maybe I could take it from the CD drive. Which is not likely to see much use either being only a 2x drive.

It looks like I can only fit a 60 or 70mm fan :/ unless I were to mount it horrizontally

Oh.. and 3x pcimcia adapters ;-)
Flourinert percolator tubes coming off the processors/Leo board!

I remember seeing one where there were some midsize fans mounted horizontally on top of slots cut into the case top.

If originality is a concern I'd go with a external funneled airbox running some high volume fans. Maybe even remove the internal fans to give a more open airflow. Completely removable.
