Looks pretty lame. Almost like a dell blade server.

Sad. I'm sure the term for the marketing strategy can be found in the dictionary somewhere between necromancy and necrophilia.

Or the beautiful MIPS RISC instruction set and ccNUMA based architecture, to name a few things... (Also, didn't the Origin 3900 support several terabytes of RAM? The Altix line certainly does).

I agree with the OP, it looks like a lame thing. In fact, I don't really see the gigantic difference between (except for CPUs and cores, amount-wise) it and the Octane III , other than storage and graphics capabilities. Both boring x86/-64 blade servers.

yeah.. it is very sad to see how things continuing distortions in time :(
I do not understand the insistence of using old names more than a matter of marketing, ...but its only enough to read the "OS" table and see: Win .. and realize the "kind" of product.
Especially in this case, that the purchase decision bypasses the outer beauty, but precisely as illustrated by the posts, in the inner beauty of its architecture and reliability! :)

It's a pretty awesome box, but not for SGI...nor does the Origin label even remotely fit. Stupid thing is just a re-badged "Intel Modular Server".

Oh wow that is lazy (and kind of embarrassing).

Hey, not everything is bad. The hard disk caddies are the same of Tezro / Origin 350... or my Sun LX50 ones.

SGI - the legend will never die!!
The only thing ‘SGI’ I recognize in the tiny pictures of that kitschy monstrosity are the HDD brackets/trays, those appear to be similar to — if not the same as — the ones in my Tezro/O350 and the Prism (deskside), though pretty much commodity too...

( Edit : I see others remarked it before me, I should hit the refresh button more often).

I wonder why they confused the issue, already having the successful Altix line for Intel-based machines (XE for x86_64).

I think they're positioning the Altix line for larger, higher end installations, while the Origin/Octane lines are aimed at SMB/workgroup applications.

I agree that it is a little clumsy, since the Origin model name was much more closely associated with the highest end of computing, not with the SMB/workgroup market.

Just wait until they license the rights to the name "InfiniteReality" to some third-rate graphics card company looking for some sows-ear-into-silk-purse rebranding alchemy.

Well at least it's better than a rebadged Dell.
