Using a RASC rack is like programming a GPU. Beside running shader programs on it, you could use them a dsp, too.

--me, too. nice screenshots, indeed. that sgi-notebook looks different than that one in "twister".
oh i see, the display is presenter-based - so it should be the same "fake-laptop" as in the twister movie. but looks nice and convincing, as in twister one could only see the upper part of the laptop.
I definetively need this movie on dvd - didn't remember that it was such massively sgi-equipped.
it's a pity they didn't use a dual r14k-600 octane2 in this benchmark :(
I couldn't resist in upgrading my lovely toy:

As far as I have his biography in mind, McKenna is a manager who used to rescue companies and carry on afterwards. So it's no time for being anxious imho.

Seems like there are good expectations on the marked concerning the CEO change.
Ah no. The old CEO disappointed us fans and freaks by dismissing graphics. But he did what he had to do quite well.
Try the GDM 5411. Goes around 100 $ and has an excellent picture.

Nice work! and because your machine has this temperature monitoring, you can alway check if everything is ok.

Seems like Octane has to warmup ^_^ a little bit.
doing the 2nd script, your renderer uses both cpu's in stage 3:

Seems like there is still an issue about threads that I have
to spot.

Well, for me, your program works really smooth, even at 97,4% usr. I can still do work while rendering.

Seti, on the other hand, stalls the Octane while working on 2 datasets; it becomes totally unresponsive then.

Thanks for sharing the sourcecode. It built on MIPSpro 7.4.4m without any error or warning.

Now I'm torturing the Octane with it:

Code: Select all

/fractbatch 8192 8192 1024 32 frects0089.txt

I get 187,8 CPU% right at the beginning.

no, it does not work with an SGI Octane Personal Video Board.
yes can use VTR as source.
no, SGI Octane1 for Impact GFX Digital Video Board cannot run in octane2.

yes - browse this forum to find all the answers.

I'll get myself an Ubuntu x86 VM (having MacOS as main OS atm).

I just installed the MaXX inside a Parallels Ubuntu 9.04 on my MacBook.
The shell-script installation ran flawessly and now the windowmanager can be selected inside login screen.

First impression: It's such a strange feeling to have "IRIX" on my laptop

But very nice!!

Thank you very much everyone who's involved in developing it!!

this may sound silly somehow(?), but:

considering the fact, that inside the Linux kernel is - thanks to SGI's commitment - a lot of IRIX code. So with MaXX Desktop, IRIX lives on even on the desktop...

And now that there is the EFI bios, one could think about creating a linux distro that brings up the console that we are use to on SGI workstations while booting.

"NekoIRIX 7.0"

This was my second computer (after C64), but now it's a hard-to-find :-( perhaps somebody in Europe wants to ged rid of it?

The model number should be 2168:

75MHz P54C-Pentium or faster;
8MB RAM-expandable to 128;
500mb harddisk
and 1mb Trident Framebuffer 'GFX' - upgradeable to 2MB)

Mainboard layout:
http://stason.org/TULARC/pc/motherboards/I/IBM-CORPORATION-Pentium-APTIVA-2144-2168-TYPE-H-2.html

Thanks!!

@bri3d: then you upgraded it - 16 MB for 486 was really a lot.

I was crazy about my Aptiva-I totally maxed it out. In the end, it was more expensive than simply buying a new PC.
I inserted 128MB ram; Ethernet; FireGL 1000 Pro PCI; bigger Harddrive and installed Windows NT.

Later I donated it to some person. He thought, switching the PSU from 220 to 110 volts could be a good idea
