File comment: There is an opening on the rear of the case just below the position of the installed graphics board. The opening has a cover plate on headless Origin 350s. The cover can be removed and a radial fan installed internally to provide extra cooling.

The openings seen in the graphics board bulkhead should be sealed so the fans will draw cool air through the nodeboard shroud and across the graphics board heatsink, rather than through the opens in the graphics board bulkhead and right back out via the fans.

File comment: 70mm radial fan (this one is rated at 14.7CFM). The 70mm fan is a tight fit between the PCI riser and the IO9 daughter card. The fan is positioned to exhaust air through an exhaust grill (the grill has a removable cover plate). This photo was taken during a 'test' fit; before final installation a gasket was added to seal the gap between the fan and the case.

This particular fan was used because it was what the local computer parts place had in stock that was the right size. It's a Dynatron 70mm Radial fan, most commonly used on low-profile CPU coolers (for 1U servers). It might be possible to fit larger radial fan if the exhaust ducting is arranged to place the body of the fan behind the IO9 daughter board (seen in the right foreground of the photo).

File comment: Three-pin header for graphics fan. To avoid L1 "Fan Error" messages, a 3-pin fan that proves fan speed information must be used. The header uses a non-standard pinout: Pin 1 - 12VDC; Pin 2 - Tach; Pin 3 - Ground. NOTE: A 4-pin PWM fan may also be used; the O350 fan header and the PWM fan socket are keyed to allow connection of only the 3 necessary fan wires (although the 12VDC, tach and ground wires should be configured to match the SGI pinout).

File comment: Upper exhaust fan replaced (without bracket) and a VPro graphics board installed in place of lower fan (the heatsink and bulkhead on the graphics board must be trimmed to allow installation). The large square metal object visible in the graphics board is the backing plate/attachment mechanism for the VPro heatsink. There is a threaded hole in the center of this assembly that will align with an opening in the lid of the O350 - inserting a screw through the O350 lid into the threaded hole will provide support to the graphics board.

I like the way you cut the V10 heatsink to let the cover over the CPUs/bedrock but then where do you intend to install the extra cooling ?

Anyway, nice to see you got yours :)

bplaa.yai wrote:

I had taken the heatsink off while working on the INV_ODSY_MEMCFG_512 thread and got noticed that it probably wouldn't take much to cut it. Once I had the O350 to measure from it was a 10 minute job with a carbide-tipped power saw.
bplaa.yai wrote:

It's installed - check the fan listing in the L1 'env'. I installed a 70mm PWM fan into what I thought might have been intended as the graphics fan exhaust slot . I plugged the new fan's 4-pin connector into the 3-pin "fan 4" header . Also covered up all of the vents through the V10 bulkhead and gasketed the fan where it attaches to the O350 case <so the fan wasn't sucking air in through the path of least resistance and right back out again>. With a couple hours of run time the Bedrock has held steady at 48c <tho I plan to do a little stress testing this afternoon>.

Very nice! I may wind up doing this in my second O350 node (the one without the IO9). Does anyone know the difference between a Tezro rack and a "modded" Onyx 350 InfinitePerformance? They smell the same to me :)

Nice work! and because your machine has this temperature monitoring, you can alway check if everything is ok.

The illustrations and text in the respective owner's guides make the them appear more similar than not. Interestingly, SGI avoids *any* mention in the Tezro rack user's guide of the external XIO port <and by proxy, the Router brick and other XIO connected expansion bricks> - perhaps to give some "marketing distance" between the rack Tezro and what was probably the relatively more expensive Onyx Infinite Performance?

There are probably some differences in the PROM <I say probably, but I'm sure *someone* here has the skills required to look> to produce the differing PROM splash screens and the machine type info seen by inst:
Code:
CPUARCH=R10000
IP35
CPUBOARD=IP35
MODE=64bit
SUBGR=IP35
GFXBOARD=ODYSSEY
MACHINE=Onyx3 InfinitePerformance, Fuel

Geoman wrote:

The monitoring system is pretty nice. The L1 environmental monitoring lists "Target Average" and "Current Average" temperatures for a number of key components <and even which "Zones" are monitored>. The system can automatically adjust the fan speeds for temperature increases/decreases; will increase fan speeds if one fan fails, and shut the system down if two fail or any of the monitored zones exceeds the listed 'fault temp'. If there are any problems with system fans or temperatures, the "Service Required" LED on the front panel will activate and the L1 display will scroll the appropriate error or fault message.

Someone needs to get a V12 in one of these - I think that might be part of how the PROM and software recognizes the difference - I know, for one, that Discreet licensing recognizes my system as a "fuelv10"

Gerhard Lenerz's SGIStuff table lists Onyx350, Onyx4 (this was the UltimateVision configuration), Tezro, and Origin350 as having the exact same IP numbers - I'm guessing the recognition is just based on the graphics option, since it seems to be the only solid difference between them.

Added an mAudio Revolution 7.1 <the OEM for the SGI DMediaPro DM8 PCI Audio Option> and an LSI SAS3442X PCI-X SAS/SATA HBA. There's currently a SATA DVD-RW hanging off the SAS3442X; wanted to re-try the SATA DVD-RW with a clean install.

That's probably the key - Tezro never shipped with a V10 so it makes sense in that respect.

I'm sure you're well aware, but you do have native IDE should a SATA DVD-RW not work out :)

Someone needs to get a V12 in one of these - I think that might be part of how the PROM and software recognizes the difference - I know, for one, that Discreet licensing recognizes my system as a "fuelv10"

That's probably the key - Tezro never shipped with a V10 so it makes sense in that respect.

The Tezro was codenamed Chimera, and so is the O350 (according to PROM settings).

In addition, there's a PROM flag to switch between a "ChiBlade" and a "Rackmounted Workstation" (which seems to have no effect on my system - I've tried both settings and they stick but don't seem to do anything) - so I think we've got it.

Now someone just needs to grab a V12 and try it!

I have a V12 if anyone wants to contribute an O350 ....
very nice guide!
especially the part with the screw to hold the vpro from the top is neat. anyhow i still have kinda bad feeling about the vpro hanging quite loose in there ...

one more thing i just had a look at your env output and noticed the lower number of fans. here's mine:
Code:
FAN  0  EXHST 1    Enabled         1980         2235
FAN  1       PS    Enabled         3200         4017
FAN  2    PCI 1    Enabled         1980         2250
FAN  3    PCI 2    Enabled         1980         2518
FAN  4      ODY     Active         1679            0
FAN  5  N0 LEFT     Active         1980            0
FAN  6  N0 CNTR    Warning         1980            0
FAN  7 N0 RIGHT     Active         1980            0

Factory rackmount Tezro ... is that what that cross-brace is for ?
ah, yes, now a peak under the v12 would be great.
maybe i can get that 'cage' somewhere?

I wish ... that's the only photo of the innards of a real rackmount Tezro I've ever seen.
