SGI: Discussion

SGI and prices, make a contribution.

Hello all.

I'm in the process of making a little price list of SGI systems and parts. Eg what did a Indigo cost back in 1992? A skywiter, an Origin 2000, a FC XIO card, a 2m Craylink cable so on and so forth. When they were released into the market and say a few years later. Software too of course.

I know there is big diffrences when it comes to systems because of their inherent possibility of configuration, but if you know a price of THAT system or THAT part. Any price that came out of SGI or a reseller. I don't care as long it is a price of something. Just to see how ridiculously high the prices actually were.

It could be a bit of curious nostalgia that can reside in the wiki pages or something. I will put it together into a nice little document when there's enough data.

Important is year or full date, what part or system configuration and of course the price. It doesn't matter if the price is with or without VAT but should be specified if it's known. Also, currency doesn't matter, it's an easy task to convert anyway.

So keep it coming. Post here or PM me. Either way is fine.

Take a look here:

Remember that prices for most of this came down to negotiations and throw this in or that. Probably mostly through VARs. I know they don't say when they were released, but it's a good start with some SGI starting prices. I have one or two I picked up at a computer show that isn't here. I should scan and send to neko.
Hmm, looks like that almost covers what I was planning to do. Guess I'll scrap this idea alltogether. :(

Hehe, it was a long time since I read that article. Quite some bit of nostalgia there. I didn't remember that the specified any prices though. Nice.

I have a price list from february 1999. I think it comes from MCE. The list includes complete systems and parts.
In this list an Octane 2xR10000 195MHz MXI 2Gb harddrive cost about $18000.
The exchange rate in 1999 was about 8.20SEK for 1$, so it was almost 150000SEK (if anyone else in Sweden is interested :-) ).

The list is in print, but I can scan it for you if you want to. Even though an Indigo was old in 1999 it might still be interesting.

Interesting info in the periodic tables.
Especially the latest one with Origin systems. Seeing an 32cpu Origin2000, once cost close to $1000000, now just for playing around with.
I know my octane cost just north of $60000 in early 1997 with dual 195, MXI, 4gb disc, 128 mb ram, and all the fixin's.

No idea how much the memory upgrade to 1gb cost in 2001 though...

at the time they were not 'ridiculous', merely expensive.

i know a o2 r5k model was about 10k at 97
$15.5k for an entry-level 750 seems like quite a lot.
iBook G4 1GHz "Kursk" (PPC)
Terian Tiger 4 "Vyasma" (Itanium)
Boring Homebuilt "Voronezh" (Athlon X2)
RS6000 7044-170 333MHz/1GB
single octane 300mhz w/o cdrom in 1997: 557 257 Czk ($16000)

you are right. it's r10k 250mhz. i mistaken it for another octane.
btw. dual octane 400 in 1999 for about $25000, but I will have to check it to be sure (czech republic again).

Well, from the prices that I got from SGI sales during the period of 1992-1996 I would say that prices were pretty well in the ridicolous domain. Maybe not so much the systems themselves but upgrades and peripherals.
This, both compared to other visual workstation makers but also PC related hardware and software.

Of course, it could be that it was the case just in Sweden but I digress.
