Cool! It was one of my favourite shows as a kid. Never noticed the SGI-machine though.

If you don't mind, I'll shoot http://www.starringthecomputer.com a message!

Hi Pontus, what old listings do you have? I'm always in the mood for hearing about old IBM stuff.

For some reason I totally missed this reply. The company I worked for started on an IBM 360 and moved on to a 370, we have a source code listing for one of the early versions of the software we still sell today. It would be kind of fun to see if I could get it running today. I suppose there are emulators ?

Yup, found this some time ago and asked for more pictures, the newer pictures showed that it was an empty machine. It is certainly not impossible to find the CPU boards. The PSU will be trickier, you will probably have to wire something up. But yes! it is darn cool.

Also, CHM has one, can't find the link now :(

My personal view is that text is easier to read if you keep it around 80 columns wide, which is what I've tried to achieve on the home page in my SIG.

I can however, for the love of god, not understand why the designers of last example felt they had to cram _three_ columns of text/ads/links on to that small space. And why are the pictures are squeeezed into the text. Somebody needs to learn that classical news paper layout doesn't do it for the web...

Welcome!

Wow, yours is pretty rusted up.

My 2100 (in storage) had a brother that got shopped up and sent to a fellow called Peter in the UK. I know he used the PSU but the other parts might be unused. If you like I could try to get you in touch with Peter. I'm also on #vms as pontus.

I don't know for sure but I have always thought the compute modules were identical in rack and deskside configurations. However if you have an Onyx2 deskside that you want to fit it into, there might be some physical limitations. Compare with the wiki where we documented the tear down of the compute modules:

SGI has wonderful hardware design(both aesthetic and functional) and quite a bit of lore around it. Many movies and tv-series used SGI hardware to produce effects.

Those are two things that put SGI ahead, otherwise it's just another Unix.

Yupp. There was just an 11/83 offered on classiccmp (and claimed). Trades are not that common on classiccmp. You could check out vintage-computer.com/forums and broaden your horizon a bit, germany seems to have quite a bit of DEC stuff.

The BA11-VA is the smallest PDP-11 case I know of. But it is quite rare, go for the BA23, it is convenient and probably the most common. If you decide to build a PDP-11 from parts, make sure the case is decent and has the important bits. Boards seems to pop up here and there.

jan-jaap wrote: I like it, but it looks like you have a lot of work to do still!

Sure do. I've done most of the floor now and I'm waiting for a plumber to come relocate some pipes. Then it's mostly finishing up around the edges :)
jan-jaap wrote: How much space do you need? I can't imagine you want to crawl underneath... I hope your place is rodent proof, because they will love it under there.
It's not really visible in the pictures but there is a concrete socle that runs around the room, I wanted the floor to go above that. I had the ceiling height to do it. The space underneath will only house some cables, a bit of plumbing and a secret stash of booze :)

jan-jaap wrote: Another reason for me not getting a raised floor is that I don't want stairs at the entrance to my room. It would make moving big equipment in and out a lot harder too.
This is a problem, but I'm making it possible to remove a section of the floor to put a small ramp there. This means four legs are not glued to the floor but stabilized against the rest of the floor with "stringers".

No, the thing with the copper pipes and the gauges... 8-)

Aha! that is the central heating for the rest of my house. I will put it in a small enclosure so that any leaks hopefully goes under the floor rather than all over my computers. (another reason for the raised floor)
