That doesn't make any sense. Using .chestrc in your home directory doesn't change system wide settings (just the user), so why should it not be an option? It's no different than using .auxchestrc in your home directory.

We never had a Nekoware version of Octave - just a version I built a while back that doesn't work correctly.

That's actually a very good idea and a great article too; not sure where I'd put it and if anyone would actually read it though :/

I have an idea which thread brought this topic up and I feel your pain. Generally I tend to whistle and pretend I didn't see the post at all when they reach that point ;)

I bought one of the 20" models to play with; supposed to be here on Tuesday. Ordered it with 256MB VRAM and a single 1GB SODIMM. Picked up a second 1GB SODIMM from OWC as that was cheaper then getting them both from Apple.

Well I fired up my old Indigo last weekend after replacing a dead battery. Great machine - but it sure would be nice to have some basic Nekoware stuff (how spoiled I've become!). So I took advantage of the fact we have such a great resource of detailed compilation instructions, patches and complete distribution files and began to "respin" existing Nekoware packages as mips3.

The basic procedure is to do a 'keep *' on a mips4 nekoware package followed by a 'install neko_somepackage.opt.*' to get the goodies needed for a recompile (instructions, source, patches and dist files). All compilation was done on IRIX 6.5.22/MIPSpro 7.4.4m on an Indigo R4400.

It's only been a few days but I've already put together enough to become useful including basic utilities (Perl, Python, Ruby, etc.), fun stuff like dexter1's XMMS and GQMPEG, server goodies like Postfix, BIND9, OpenSSL/OpenSSH and more.

Everything should just work unless I missed stripping out a 'mach' dependency in one of the dist files (got bit by that at the outset). If these packages prove useful to someone, great - if not, hey, I've got some stuff to play with on my Indigo now ;)

It's all a matter of time - I've only been working on this a week now :) I just finished that one today.

If there are any other packages folks want to see sooner than later (provided they're already in standard Nekoware) let me know and I'll try to bump them higher in the priority chain.

Yes, it does look like this is mips4 which is of course an issue:

Code:

But just for the record, my mips3 Indigo running IRIX 6.5.22 seems to work just fine with the stock Newtek fsel.

Not sure about the Tezro, but changing out the graphics board on the Fuel wasn't much fun either (went from a V10 to a V12). There's actually a screw that goes through the bottom of the machine into the card along with the more obvious fasteners.

There's a description of the "laptops" used in Twister here:

http://www.bftr.com/Pages/projects/twister.html

Probably much the same for Congo.

Quote:
In the story, the two rival chase teams --one corporate sponsored, one low-tech university funded-- both have sets of computer equipment that was to match their incomes. SGI product placement dictated that ALL of the computers in the film had to be SGIs, so we had the task of making not only two distinctly different sets of graphics for nearly every scene, but different-looking EQUIPMENT between the two teams. This was nowhere more evident than with the SGI "laptops," which of course didn't exist. With the tireless dedication and help of Dan Evanicky at SGI, we were able to design and build two different fake laptop shells around the SGI Corona LCD flatscreen displays, with seven functional and seven dummy cases for each design, we had a handful to take care of; each "laptop" had a powerful custom backlight run off a separate 12-volt DC power supply and multiple cables which ran back off the set (often through mud and puddles) to the Indy CPUs which fed them. Each shell was custom-milled for us by IDE, a prototype manufacturer in the Silicon Valley.

Like I've said, if it isn't in nekoware-mips4 it's not going in nekoware-mips3 - I'm not going to do exclusive packages that don't have an equivalent in the the mips4 distro. This is just a 1:1 port project :)

not really :-(
I have the Set Engineering in my r5k-180 Challenge S and it performs about as poor as the Phobos E100 (EISA) in an Indigo2 (~6.5 MB/s peak according to ttcp). And it does Half Duplex only.. :-(
It might keep up with the Phobos G100 but i'd trade it for a G130 in a second. The advantage of the Set Engineering is that you don't need extra drivers. Even the miniroot kernel already knows the board, so you can use it for network installs..

Ah, okay then - in that case I'll just put it in an Indy and keep the G130 in the Indigo. It's doing full duplex pretty nicely at the moment :)

Hmm, I'm not sure that killing env monitoring will save you. As I've noted in my original post of this thread, the messages are written by the kernel so they will be in the syslog even if eventmond is not running. Also, I suspect my box would have been killed anyway regardless of whether eventmond was running or not ...

If you're shutting off env monitoring on the L1 (which is the case here) it won't report anything to the kernel. No-one said anything about turning off eventmond - this is more low level :)

Hello world !

What I'd really really love to see ported to MIPS3 is ScummVM 0.9.0 (I think this is the latest)! I've been awaiting this for years ! BTW, a small package without the embedded games would also be more practical, but I don't want to be asking too much ! It's already a veryveryvery good job.

I wasn't able to get ScummVM to compile using the supplied patches from the mips4 archive using MIPSpro 7.4.4/IRIX 6.5.22 so this one is a non-starter.

Quote:
The Gimp and Inkscape would also be nice to use on my I2 ! PhotoShop and CorelDraw 3 are a bit rusty by today's standards ;)

These are really, really heavy apps for mips3 machines so I've avoided touching them - they're going to be close to unusable. I did build CinePaint which uses GTK 1.x toolkit and hence quite a bit more lightweight. Personally I still think Photoshop 3 rocks :)

BTW, does neko-mips4 work on an Indy R5000 ? I'm always a bit lost with the status of this arch wrt compatibility.

Yes, that will work fine with standard mips4 Nekoware.

Thanks a lot to all maintainers for the work ! All of that is going to put several of my machines to a new life !
As a side note, I'd really be happy to contribute some of my unused mips3 horsepower to the compilation effort, but I have no MIPSPro license :( . If there is a way round that, just tell me...

MIPSpro is a must - we need to get every ounce of performance possible on this architecture.

I did have a look at the Gimp on the I2 (R4400 250 SI 384Mo iirc) a long time ago (can't even remember where I found it) and it was usable. Not with 700MB pictures but usable for web site imaging.

A long time ago GIMP didn't use GTK2 which is what kills the speed :) CinePaint is fork of the GIMP 1.x code base and hence still pretty speedy. Try that one; if your experience is from a long time ago anyway that will fit the bill.

Easier to have a clean build environment this way; won't get any stray static linked mips4 libraries in the mix. Plus I just don't have spare mips4 machines anymore; just my Fuel (which I do mips4 development on; would have all sorts of conflicts while creating a mips3 distro there) and my O300 which I'd rather not waste cycles on.

Besides, it's not the compile time that's a problem - the Indigo R4K does just fine. It's wrestling with the compile problems that the patches just don't address - I don't have much time to rediscover solutions to the same issues the original package creators also went through (and should have added in the release notes/patches!) :)
