Not a problem at all. I'm working on trying to get a good tarball of 6.5.67 from foetz; might have something in a week or so.

A nice alternative to a tripod is a steadycam mount, especially if you're going to be moving the camera around the subject a lot. I'm planning on building one of the $14 "Poor Man's Steadicam" mounts myself in the not too distant future:

Yup. You can build one out of whatever you like, the important thing is to actually use it and eliminate those shakes :)

As for customization, I'm probably going to install foam rubber grips on mine - just need to find a place that sells them.

The h264 path in mplayer isn't optimized for MIPS at all. dexter1 did a lot of great work optimizing mplayer's xvid path for MIPS, but at the time he did this h264 wasn't even part of the software.

Yep - since I run a live internet facing IRIX server, I try to jump on this sort of thing as quickly as humanly possible ;)

Glad to hear these are working okay for you as well - I'll push them into /current later today. Thanks!

There are tons of them in San Francisco's Japantown. Last weekend I had ebi-furai curry rice at Osakaya which was pretty good.

Not my photo, but shows some of the window display:

Newtype USA isn't published anymore (last issue was February 2008) - it was owned by ADV and they've pretty much gone down the tubes. I don't really keep up with the english language magazine scene, so I really don't know what additional options are out there these days.

Personally, I'm a fan of the poster magazines like Megami, Dengeki Hime and Comptiq Heroines (Comp H's). You really don't need to know any Japanese to enjoy them ;)

That's a great find! I'm reasonably sure it will work too - just a matter of how the ports are routed more than anything else.

So it basically updates the mouse pointer to the same scheme the more modern IRIX hardware uses - that's pretty neat!

I'm on the lookout for some chips as well; I have one I can probably salvage from a dead board, but I'd like to update all three of my working boards at some point.

Apparently. This the original Usenet post which outlines the installation procedure and lack of 3.x support:

Tom Paquin Jul 12 1991, 4:20 am wrote: It is possible to get a two-color cursor on a PI. It is not simple, it is not low-risk, and it won't work for most existing PIs because of system software issues. It nukes warranties and bags support.

Of course, this is not a procedure endorsed or recommended by Silicon Graphics. But that's not the worst part. I am fairly sure that you'd have a tough time getting support for (allegedly) unrelated problems if you call the hotline and say "I have a PI, but I've soldered some of my own chips into it, but that shouldn't matter and anyway, I have this other thing that isn't working." I haven't read whatever agreement gets you hotline support, but I think it likely that if you do this, you are completely on your own. I'm no authority on this.

The two-color cursor mod is entirely incompatible with pre-4.0 Irix. Unless and until you get 4.0, you do NOT want to try this; the result will be a machine which won't boot. (Yes, there are intelligible reasons for this.)

The mod requires soldering your graphics board. One slip and you could waste your board. This kind of failure is not, I believe, covered by any sort of warranty. (Did you buy your PI with AmEx?)

OK, so if you're crazy, not dissuaded, or merely curious:

0) Get used to the idea that if you screw this up, you're out at least your graphics board and SGI isn't going to fix it for free. Believe that all your future support may have to come from comp.sys.sgi.

1) Make sure you're on Irix 4.0 (or later?). If you're installing 4.0 and doing the mod, you must do the 4.0 inst first.

2) Go to the store and buy a Brooktree chip which says Bt431KC on it.

3) Remove your E module. This holds the CPU and graphics board. Take the entire E module out of the PI chassis. Then turn it graphics-side up and remove the faceplate. You can tell graphics side from CPU side by looking at the connectors on the back. If you need more help than that, you shouldn't try this. Once you can see the graphics board, check for a Z buffer. If you have a Z buffer installed, remove that. Be careful, ground yourself, etc.

4) Locate through-holes for an absent chip labelled I8G6. It's right next to an existing Bt431 kinda in the middle of the board, right next to the large Weitek chip.

5) Solder the new Bt431 in the I8G6 location, oriented the same way as the existing Bt431. They'll be right next to each other. The through-holes should be filled with solder. You'll probably have to empty them first. Remember not to screw anything up with that soldering iron.

6) Reinstall your Z-buffer if you had one, put the cover back on the e-module, reinstall the e-module, and boot. Irix 4.0 will try to use the new chip.

Oh, I'm not sure - I think the power supply is 1050w, but it probably doesn't consume that much in use. The Crimson did come with a free blue Octane2 2x300MHz/V8 though ;)

There are two PSU's for 'diehard'/'diehard2' desksides : originally, a silver PowerOne model was used, later systems have a black Cherokee. Both have the same ratings , so they are interchangeable. Unfortunately, the build quality of the Cherokee is rather inferior to the PowerOne model. If you have a black PSU you'd better remove it from the system and make sure the fan is working and not drowning in a cake layer of dirt and dust. Because if that fan dies, the PSU will overheat and self destruct. I know, it happened to me :( The PowerOne model will shut down gracefully. I know, that happened to me too ;)

All the fans are operational; the system is extremely clean - it looks brand new. No dust bunnies, grime or grit whatsoever :)

Here's a photo of the power receptacle if that helps identify it - I don't really want to take it apart again right now unless I have to:

Well it did come from a basement :) $150 got me the Crimson, Octane2, extra drive sleds, external drives, large box of QIC tapes including original VFX software from the late eighties/early nineties, etc.

Both machines were used in the visual effects industry; the previous owner worked in VFX as well as at SGI itself.

Not really, but there's another way: if you engage that breaker switch and you hear a fan humming inside before you flip the on/off switch on the front you have a PowerOne PSU. If not, you have a Cherokee PSU.

Since this is a 'late' Crimson (original configuration R4400 + RE) my guess is it has the Cherokee PSU.

A fan does come on as soon as the breaker switch on the PSU is flipped on, so it must be a PowerOne. Once the front panel switch is flipped the others roar to life. The manufacture date on the card cage door is 12/94.
