There are lots of great Apple II resources out there; it's pretty easy to hook up an Apple II via serial and send downloaded disk images via ADTPro. You can also back up those disks you have to your PC/Mac for safekeeping: http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/

Very cool! It's always nice to see how others have their retro computers set up. I'm working on a new desk arrangement in my spare bedroom for my older machines and will post some pictures once I get it all together.

Ah, the seller is mistaken in the description - it's not an XVI (which is model CZ-634C), it's a Compact (CZ-674C). The problem with the Compact model is that it uses 3.5" disk drives, and nearly all the prepackaged X68000 software you'll find out there will be on 5.25" disks. Probably for the best that you didn't win that one :)

In the latest video they run an interactive version on an Asus laptop (i7 based). He stated it was running on a single core with no GPU assist.

I've updated to the latest MediaWiki version this evening but it proved a messy upgrade. In the past it was enough to simply untar the newer version over the old one and run an update script (as per Manual:Upgrading ), but they've apparently shuffled some files around and caused breakage this time around. I've set everything back up under a clean install, but if anyone notices something not working as before let me know.

I noticed this morning that the Tidy extension wasn't set up correctly so I fixed it (it still had the binary location from a past life in the configuration file). The layout of the Main Page seems to rely on broken HTML so Tidy is mangling the appearance somewhat. I poked around with the source a bit to see if I could clean it up, but much of what I tried only made it worse. If it looks like enabling Tidy will be too much of a hassle at this point I can turn it back off, but it's supposed to make things easier/cleaner.

I went ahead and redesigned the front page this afternoon. It also has some new links that should make editing/contributing easier.

I set up MediaWiki to hide 'index.php' to be a bit cleaner. I also ran a query against the forum database to update any wiki links to use the new format, so there shouldn't be any need to go back and edit old posts.

Google will catch up eventually. Unfortunately I don't have any control over them, you'll just have to wait until they update their index.

Well the power supply exploded when I decided to get the system set back up again (detonated right after the keyboard lights check during boot). I'll either have to track down a replacement or find a place to repair the existing supply sometime early next year.

I'm pretty sure it's a Cherokee supply; I'd have to double check (it's a late model Crimson though, and I seem to recall the PS is black).

That was just a guess of course - I haven't opened the back and actually looked at it just yet (I did say I'd have to double check). Maybe this weekend sometime.

Unfortunately, so is the 7720U. Acard did make adapters that fit underneath the drive (ARS-2000FW), but they no longer seem to be in production.

I used one of those over 10 years ago in an Indigo2, it did work extremely well. There's a little writeup on it in the blog from 2002: http://www.nekochan.net/weblog/archives ... g-the.html and http://www.nekochan.net/weblog/archives ... -gear.html

One of the first arrivals was the ACARD ARS-2000FU Ultra SCSI-IDE bridge I mentioned last month. I have to say the bridge has been everything I hoped for; extremely easy to install and use. It's amazing how much storage capacity this gives you for such little cash and the performance is wonderful. I can't say enough good things about these ... in fact, I'm going to buy a couple more of them very soon (one for the Indigo(1) and another for the second bay in the Indigo2). After setting the SCSI ID on the bridge and connecting everything up it was a simple matter to clone my existing system drive over. I used the "Cloning A Root Disk" section of Ian Mapleson's Disk and File System Administration guide, opting for the xfsdump/xfsrestore method outlined in that document.

We used to have a system where submitters would post in the 'Nekoware-current' sticky thread and testers would leave feedback there, but everyone abandoned it. Heck, I can't get folks to notify me when things are uploaded - most of what is in /beta right now is random mystery meat uploaded to /incoming.

Pymble is going to love this, but a little entry in the wiki about each app might be handy ? I know he doesn't have enough to do, this will keep him off the streets for a while

At one time joerg had a script that would automatically pull the release notes from a tardist and create a wiki entry based on it (he used it on his own wiki). I'm not sure if he still has it anymore; he's pretty much moved on.

I've moved one package to /current after three positive votes, but based on the low response to the threads so far we may have to go with just two positive votes.

Haven't had a captcha (ConfirmEdit) for a while now. Instead, I installed ConfirmAccount which allows trusted accounts to post whatever they want. Stops the random link farmers/vandals and would still allow a script like that to run.

I was thinking about getting one, but decided to go with a maxed out BTO 11" Macbook Air instead (just arrived last week, loving it!). I still have a 64GB first gen iPad which will get the job done for another year :)

There was a a recent article on engadget on this machine: http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/04/rola ... afty-tool/

It looks like it would be handy for model parts and other small things.

Yep, everything was up and running the whole time, but the network was isolated. Once they fixed the problem at the CO everything came back up on its own. They still haven't told me what they did to fix it though (edit: was informed they replaced the DSLAM card).

Hey, you're welcome - glad I spent all that time on the phone getting things running for you again.

That said, I may look into using Twitter for notifications again. But you have to realize this is my hobby, not a professionally paid for site with advertising and income and all the other neato stuff (currently runs me about $3000/yr out of pocket). Going on right off the bat about how I could do things better isn't very endearing.

I guess the bulk of the costs are for connectivity with a guaranteed bandwidth?

Yeah, the connection I run has a static IP allocation, the ability to run servers (obviously) and guaranteed upstream/downstream. It's basically a business-class SDSL line, but it runs me $250 a month. For many years I used it as my sole connection to the Internet and Nekochan kind of just rode along as a freebie, but nowadays Nekochan is the only thing using that line (I've moved on to faster downstream cable service for general surfing).

Does your isp snivel about running a low-traffic website on a normal dsl line ? I'd think you could run nekochan on a less expensive service without causing any harm (except to your ISP's pocketbook :D )

Yeah, most providers block key ports unless you have a business class connection, plus the cheap packages tend to use dynamic IPs. I may look into Comcast's business package sometime though, it sounds pretty good.

You can set up your own forward DNS pretty easily, but the reverse DNS can be an issue if your ISP doesn't support a fall through to your DNS server (for example, 64.81.247.28 would reverse map to something like dsl081-247-028.sfo1.dsl.speakeasy.net instead of sachiko.nekochan.net).

And as jan-jaap mentioned, most MTAs would block SMTP originating from a residential class line. Business class subnets aren't normally blacklisted as they're expected to provide SMTP traffic.
