The collected works of nekonoko - Page 18

Sounds great, I'd love to see it when you get it set up!

Speaking of 2.5" drives, there are some interesting RAID chassis available that use the smaller drives and don't cost a bundle. I may look at playing around with something like that myself.

Figured I should probably move this thread out of "Nekochan Net" :)

Great to hear you got the D954GCLF up and running! Did the MI-008 case wind up being the same internally as the Apex MI-100?

Did you manage to find an adapter?

The power supply that originally came with my MI-008 wound up failing while I was setting up the D954GCLF Hackintosh for my parents in the summer of 2008 (it poofed while attempting to move data from their old G5 iMac to the new machine). I was able to find a replacement power supply at a local mom & pop style computer shop in Bend, Oregon, but it was an older model without SATA power, suboptimal fan placement and of course, 20-pins.

So I did wind up buying a new supply when I went to Fry's rather than just an adapter, but the cost was under $30 (Coolmax CM-300). It has everything I could want on it as far as the number of connections and type, connection cable length and cooling fan placement and size (80mm on the underside, similar to the stock supply).

Yeah, for extra SATA ports I snagged a Norco 4618 off eBay to stuff in the PCI slot; gives me 4 eSATA ports with port replicator support.

Just a quick note that I activated a couple new RSS feed options for the forum this morning, "Active Topics" and "New Topics". Hopefully they're useful to some.

The only ability I have is to activate specific feed types in the admin control panel; the names are assigned by the phpBB software. However, they do show up with different names in Safari as far as I can tell.

Yep. All the sites leaknoil listed have a financial incentive to stay online and go to bat for their customers if necessary. This site has no such financial rewards - indeed, it simply costs me money each month in power and bandwidth.

As I've said before, I don't mind soaking these basic costs up, but any other hassles above and beyond power/bandwidth tip the scale towards pulling the plug and washing my hands of the whole thing. There is absolutely no financial incentive for me to talk to a lawyer whether they plan on suing me or not, and I'm certainly no Robin Hood.

Well it sort of does in a way; in your example it says "mode=forums" in the feed URL. This also changes to "mode=topics", "mode=topics_active", etc. depending on the selected feed. If you subscribe to one of the feeds in Apple Mail it's pretty easy to rename it to something more descriptive from there.

Yeah, that's just how they implemented it. Hopefully it's still somewhat useful :)

Wow, electric bill is down $81.46 from last month! That paid for the D510MO right there.

Unfortunately, the Mozilla team seems to let lots of interesting things fall by the wayside. They're currently dropping support for Mac OS X 10.4 despite Firefox 3.X having on the order of 1.5 million 10.4 users, many of which are probably running G3 machines with no 10.5 upgrade path.

Yep, power is incredibly expensive, plus usage past certain thresholds (pricing tiers) increases the cost per kWh dramatically, in my case from baseline of $0.11877 to $0.27572 for 131-200% of baseline.

Code:
Selected bill:                          2/09/2010               Last month: 1/08/2010           Bill Impact

Billing Days:                           32 days                 30 days                         +$8
Average Cost per kWh:                   $0.1209 / kWh           $0.1547 / kWh                   -$28
Average Use per Day:                    25.91 kWh / day         39.10 kWh / day                 -$61
Total Electric:                         $100.21                 $181.46                         -$81.25

This month I didn't go past 130% of baseline, using 96kWh over baseline @ $0.13502. Last month I hit the 131%-200% bracket, using 279.64 kWh @ $0.27572.

I used 13.19 kWh less per day, which is a reduction of about 550 watts per hour (0.55kWh). So yes, a savings of $81.25 due to powering off the Origins seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Sure, here's a CNet article on the decision which also has links to the relevant posts on the developer's mailing list:

But that's just counting the average use cost, not the tier 3 pricing at $.27572/kWh that the Origin bumped me up to. It's like a tax bracket - using just a bit more power can have huge repercussions on the final bill.

No additional cooling was used - the change was powering off two fully loaded Origin 350 machines, each with 8GB RAM, 4 700MHz processors and two drives (8 CPUs 16GB RAM total).

Yeah, I get weird values as well:

Code:
# sysctl -a | grep temperature
dev.cpu.0.temperature: 6.0C
dev.cpu.1.temperature: 6.0C
dev.cpu.2.temperature: 13.0C
dev.cpu.3.temperature: 13.0C

Ambient is 22C, so something isn't right there.

mbmon seems more sane:

Code:
# mbmon -I -c 1

Temp.= 38.0, 26.0, 25.5; Rot.=    0,    0,    0
Vcore = 1.15, 1.06; Volt. = 1.87, 5.08, 12.95, -12.28, -6.91

Not to start a war or anything, but what is this supposed to gain you? Seems like running an existing MIPS BSD or Linux port would accomplish pretty much the same thing, plus you'd actually gain new capabilities like USB block device support.

Stripping IRIX of its userland and plugging in xorg isn't some magic bullet - you'll still have xorg graphics drivers to worry about.

They made a version of photoshop for almost every unix system in the 3.x era. If you look in the installer script you will even see that there was almost a version for NeXTSTEP but it was never completed/released.

It all started at version 2.5 which was the first version for IRIX, Solaris and Windows (previous versions of Photoshop were exclusive to the Macintosh).

UNIX systems enjoyed one more major release in 3.0, but by 4.0 the supported systems were pared down to just Windows/Macintosh. The UNIX Photoshop era lasted from November 1993 (IRIX/Solaris v2.5) until November 1996 (release of v4.0).

Interesting that a NeXT version wasn't released though - at the time, that should have seemed a more natural fit than Solaris!

You can keep the R3K backplane intact; that part is the same regardless. In a pinch, the old R3K power supply should work too. SGI recommended upgrading the power supply for R4K conversions but I haven't actually run into a case where the older supply failed to function.

The main thing of course is the R4K CPU board.

Ah, it's not running on a D945GLF anymore - I moved to a D510MO in late January . The board is the same size physical size, but I don't think I'd want to mess with putting it in an SGI case. If I were to though, I think the Indy (Challenge S) would be a better form factor - you can actually stack things on top of it.

Not to worry - I don't plan on modding any SGI machines. It was more a comment that the O2 case design isn't very practical for a headless server.

I'll probably sell them at some point, it's just such a hassle calculating costs, taking care of shipping/packaging etc. that I haven't offered them up just yet. I bought the O350s locally so I didn't have to deal with that, but when I sold/shipped my O300s to France and the east coast of the US it was quite a pain :)
