The collected works of nekonoko - Page 20

I'd love to see a reissue/reproduction of the classic Crimson mug:

Yes - it was a promotional item at the time of the Crimson's introduction. They used to show up on eBay every once in a while, but I haven't run across one in a long time.

Also, I was wondering if I could use these icons on my own site? It's a great way to illustrate your collection.

Thanks, I've added it to the board. I don't personally have a problem with your using the icons elsewhere as long as the creators have no objections.

'dc' has been a standard part of UNIX since 1970 or so ...

Or did I miss something? :)

Yep, been that way since it was created by Dennis Ritchie on Bell Labs' PDP-7 :D

That's probably due to not having CAP_SCHED_MGT permissions set on the binary as per the MySQL IRIX documentation:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/sgi-irix.html

chcap "CAP_SCHED_MGT+epi" /path/to/libexec/mysqld

You can set this up as a postop in your tardist which is how I handle it.

(Edit: Noticed that the IRIX section is still in the 5.0/5.1 docs and updated the link)

I wouldn't. I managed to get a version of 5.1 to build once, but it did horrible, horrible things to my database. Definitely not ready for prime time on IRIX.

They do seem to be making some strides in that direction recently; the interface has been re-factored quite a bit in the new alphas:

You're quite welcome; thanks for all your contributions. Without folks like yourself this whole project wouldn't be more than a footnote :)

Well I didn't think I'd use strikethrough, but it is kind of handy for crossing off "sold" items in the the for sale/trade section :)

Couple of recent updates; upped RAM to 20GB and replaced the 4870 with a HD5870:

Also started messing around with the Final Fantasy XIV beta in Windows 7 x64 Ultimate (via Bootcamp); my character standing in the adventurer's guild:

I'm having some fun with it. The interface definitely takes some getting used to though, especially coming from WoW or Aion. I spent a few hours last night completing the Gridania starting quest chain which was entertaining - pays out a lot of gil too :) I'll probably mess around with it some more this weekend.

Oh, and my character is Arzefina Tydeine on the Wutai world server. I'll probably keep the character name and appearance when it goes live.

I played FFXI way back before the WoW launch (2003-2004); had a Mithra named Koyori with kind of an orange bowl cut. I can't find any screenshots though.

It performs well for me, but it does seem to rely on an extremely fast graphics card like a HD5870 or GTX 480. It also works much better with a gamepad rather than keyboard/mouse.

I've been playing around with a few different classes and completed some leves; nothing in depth as of yet. I figure it won't do much good to go hog wild until the 22nd :)

Here's a shot of the HD5870 installed in the Mac Pro. I still have the GTX480 I posted earlier; if the Mac drivers improve I'm certainly open to reinstalling it. At the moment, the only existent Fermi Mac drivers are the ones leaked (and subsequently pulled) by Nvidia back in June. They offer only a fraction of the performance they should.

The HD5870 is solid and speedy under both Mac OS X and Windows 7 so no worries either way :)

I also cloned over my boot drive to a 2TB WD Caviar Black WD2001FASS which should up the performance a bit. Not quite a Velociraptor, but reviews do compare favorably.

Got the FFXIV release yesterday; wound up changing my server to Melmond and character name to Mitty Fortin. Looks the same though.

I also picked up a Microsoft XBox 360 wireless controller for Windows (comes with a USB transmitter and standard XBox 360 controller). The game is a lot easier to use with it.

What really makes the device for me are apps that take advantage of the unique control interface, particularly music apps (NLogSynth Pro, miniSynth Pro, Korg iElectribe, MorphWiz, etc.) Keyboard centric apps aren't nearly as fun to use though tolerable for light usage (Pages, Numbers, iSSH, etc.)

Hopefully developers will release more synths as time goes on - tweaking knobs and sliders on the touch surface is just fantastic.

Here's kind of a neat video showing off some of the above music apps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q4GZq7TEqk

I'm playing with a VBOB with DM5 on my Tezro at the moment. I haven't had an opportunity to do much yet, but I was at least able to get gfxinfo to show the DM5 as attached via the DCD:

Code: Select all

DM5 attached to Dual Channel 0

I have a DM3 installed in the Tezro as well but don't have the proper cables to connect to the VBOB.

For myself, just for kicks. My Tezro came with DM3/DCD pre-installed so a VBOB was kind of the natural next step.

jwhat wrote: Neko I got LVDS cables from Nekochaner "Richtom1" for $45 each, so if you need cables I believe he still has some for VBOB or are you talking about coax for video?

I need the LVDS cables. I'll check with him, thanks much!

jwhat wrote: I have seen sgi specific cables advertised for DCD to DM5 connection, but was assuming I could just go to local computer shop and purchase standard DVI-I cables.

Is this a safe assumption?

I believe so. I picked up a couple 1m DVI-I cables from a wholesale outfit for $6 each; gfxinfo is able to see the DM5 with them.

jwhat wrote: Thanks again, I hope I have some success on the weekend.

Great, let us know how it goes! I'll try and get some LVDS cables and work that end as well.

I had to do the same. I wasn't sure if that was due to my LCD monitor not wanting to sync to the VBOB signal or something else.

No, not that I'm aware of. As long as you limit which ports/services are exposed and keep your open source components up to date (Apache, PHP, MySQL etc) it's no worse than any other OS.

unixmuseum wrote: Hi Neko, long time no talk... I'm curious about a few things regarding the MP: how's the 5870 compared to the 4870? I have an Apple 512MB 4870 in my MP1,1...

Since posting the above I actually bought an official HD 5870 from Apple (mostly so I could use my mini DisplayPort equipped LED display without an adapter), but the performance is otherwise identical to a flashed card. I've found it to be much faster than the 4870 for gaming and general 3D usage in both Mac OS and Windows. The extra VRAM also helps tremendously in things like Second Life that really load up on textures.

unixmuseum wrote: BTW, I read a little about the AHCI thing, what benefit is there in doing so (and yes, my Win7 drive is a 150GB Velociraptor :) )? My understanding is that the drives are treated as IDE without AHCI, but in what sense? Performance-wise the Windows experience is a disapointing 5-something, which shocked me for a 10,000RPM drive, that might be it, uh?

The biggest benefit to the AHCI hack is that it enables Windows to detect and utilize the two auxiliary SATA ports on the motherboard. This is necessary if adding something like a second SATA optical drive (such as blu-ray) - without AHCI enabled the drive won't be detected through Windows at all.

Unfortunately the 5-score is to be expected; Microsoft has apparently made it so the Windows 7 Experience awards a maximum of 5 to any drive that is not an SSD.

Yep, 5.9 is what I have as well on my standard hard drive. Now that you have the extra ports enabled, you could also grab one of OWC's eSATA extenders to route those extra ports to the rear of the machine:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20 ... y/MPQXES2/

Unfortunately I no longer have the flashed 5870; I sold it so the swap to the Apple 5870 was nearly at no-cost. The only spare cards I have right now are a Mac-flashed 4870/1GB and a PC-BIOS GTX 280 (was in my Hackintosh before replacing with a GTX 480).
