Yep, probably not much I can do about that. Subsilver really isn't supported anymore.

Right, it has no income whatsoever, and my costs are going up. I figure I'll try this, maybe sell a few things and see what happens. If it's not sustainable I'll see about passing the torch on to someone else.

Sure, that's definitely a possibility for the future. In addition to the donations I've received so far I'm planning on offering my Crimson and clear-plastic O2 systems up for sale. Hopefully all that will go a long way toward keeping the site going for the next year (my costs are $2611.80 per year for the Megapath circuit). Thanks much!

Yeah, it's the other costs I have to deal with that are going up. The Megapath price really isn't that bad in the scheme of things.

Yeah, there are other possible solutions to explore if it comes down to that point, though I'd likely retire my involvement completely and hand over the site to someone else if I had to move to a datacenter like that.

Not sure yet. I've been putting various retrocomputing items up on eBay recently (right now there's a Heathkit H19 and Commodore B128-80 from my collection).

Well someone has to "own the keys" - actually maintaining and running the forum, keeping Nekoware organized , performing software updates, etc. The hosting is only part of it. When I say I'd retire I mean it - I'd be completely disconnected - my account would be locked. If you needed anything done on this site, no matter how minor, it would be handled by someone besides myself.

Well if everyone is pushing to move to a cheaper solution, then yeah, I'd be out. We're good for at least a few months now on donations, but if that's what people really want then that's how it will go.

Yep I know. :) From my perspective sticking with what I have is the path of least resistance. If I have to pack up the site and move somewhere else and deal with a completely new infrastructure/support regimen, it makes a good stepping off point for me. Let someone else have some fun.

I'm not threatening anything - I really wouldn't mind that outcome after 14 years of keeping the site alive. Maybe it's just time to pass the torch. :)

I have to manually add the names to the group when I see the notifications come in and a couple have come in marked as "Anonymous" by the system. If anyone got missed that needs the badge just send me an IM and I'll fix it. Thanks much!

And yes, I'm serious about selling the Crimson. I never got around to fixing the power supply, so it's best to pass it on and let someone else have a go at it. I do plan on keeping my Onyx2 for now though. :)

ClassicHasClass wrote: Dunno about Pete, but my T1 is ultimately Megapath (it's actually via DSL Extreme via COVAD). I get 16 IPs, though three are reserved including one for the T1 router. I use Netsol as the nameserver for Floodgap, though I used to run it locally. I imagine the business DSL/business Ethernet deals are similar.

That said, if I didn't have a need for home monitoring, I'd probably buy a slice and run it off of that.

Yep, sounds almost exactly like my setup. It used to be Speakeasy when I first got it, but Megapath bought them.

I'll open it up again in a few months - a grand total of $900.00 came in over two days, and I was worried PayPal would freeze the account due to the rapid payments. I'd like to see if I could put up some kind of meter in the future that would cut it off once a certain goal/threshold has been reached.

I get those every year too as I don't log in anymore, just once a year when I get the reminder. I used to log in regularly when they had the developer program - you could download the "locked" patches and updates with it. Unfortunately they pulled that access long ago.

I believe jan-jaap (and others) did some testing that indicates gcc is now on par with MIPSPro for code speed, so it shouldn't be an issue performance wise. Library compatibility is a separate issue, but I think most things will work.

Wow, no idea. Do you have an example?

I just tried the plugin in Safari here and got:

forums.nekochan.net

Not seeing anything using the Ghostery web site either. Looks like there may be some issues on your side.

That's really all there is to it. I don't have the original configuration files anymore, at least not in an easily accessible location, but I just basically copied them over to a FreeBSD machine as-is and kept on going. Apache/PHP is Apache/PHP no matter what you run it on.

It's been years since I've run Apache/PHP under IRIX and I don't have a machine set up to check the tardists on at the moment. I'm sure someone else has a suitable machine and can check on it.

I'd just redirect the compiler output to a text file, then you can search through it later for whatever you need, eg.

Code: Select all

cc -v > output.txt >2&1
directs all output of 'cc -v' (including stderr) to 'output.txt'.

Very cool, let me know what you think of the pen on that. I've read that using the Astropad app you can even use it as a remote display for Mac Photoshop and have pressure working, much like a Cintiq.

That was originally an anti-spam measure; I was getting a ton of automated spam bots using those addresses a while back. I've switched over to another anti spam plugin since then so keeping the block in place shouldn't be needed at this point. I've made an update and you should be able to use a .ru address now.

The forum software won't let me assign the same e-mail address to two accounts, so you'd need to PM me and provide an alternate e-mail address to update " yetanother**ixuser"). I went ahead an manually activated the account.
