Nekochan Net

PayPal Donation Link Added (plugin requires Prosilver theme) - Page 1

Disabled for now - thanks much everyone!

*******

I've added a PayPal donation option to the page if anyone is so inclined. Over the next few months I'll also be selling/auctioning various vintage SGI systems to help pay for hosting costs. Thanks much for your support.

Edit: Apparently the donate plugin in only visible using the Prosilver theme, so you might need to toggle themes temporarily in order to use it.

Great idea! I just chipped in.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that it took me a minute to find the link. I was looking for the word "PayPal" or the PayPal logo, so I just skipped right past the "Donate" link. For those who may be similarly clueless, the link is in the navigation menu above the board index.

Yeah, the plugin I found is kind of subtle. Thanks much! :)

just in case you haven't noticed, it doesn't show up with subsilver
r-a-c.de
Yep, probably not much I can do about that. Subsilver really isn't supported anymore.

Is that to suggest that the site isn't getting enough money to stay afloat?

Right, it has no income whatsoever, and my costs are going up. I figure I'll try this, maybe sell a few things and see what happens. If it's not sustainable I'll see about passing the torch on to someone else.

If it's unsustainable on voluntary donations have you considered membership fees?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who sees great value in the info in these forums, so I'm sure lots of us wouldn't mind paying annual dues so that you can maintain the site. I've made a donation now, and will try to remember to do so again in 6 to 12 months. If this site was subscription based, I'm sure it would remind me to make those payments!

In any case, thanks for the service so far!

Sure, that's definitely a possibility for the future. In addition to the donations I've received so far I'm planning on offering my Crimson and clear-plastic O2 systems up for sale. Hopefully all that will go a long way toward keeping the site going for the next year (my costs are $2611.80 per year for the Megapath circuit). Thanks much!

Yeah, it's the other costs I have to deal with that are going up. The Megapath price really isn't that bad in the scheme of things.

Me too, the wealth of information that would be destroyed would give a historian a heart attack.

$2600 seems to be a lot. Is it like that in the whole US? Here in Poland, you can have a dedicated server with the newest Xeon E3, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB of RAID 1 storage and 10 TB of 100 Mb/s bandwidth (10 Mb/s after that) for less than $1000/year. And this is from one of the most reputable providers.

This is enough to get me to come out of the woodwork. Happy to donate, this place has been a treasure trove of information and expertise over the years. It's the center of the SGI universe as far as I'm concerned.

Will this be done through the site or on eBay?
Yeah, there are other possible solutions to explore if it comes down to that point, though I'd likely retire my involvement completely and hand over the site to someone else if I had to move to a datacenter like that.

Not sure yet. I've been putting various retrocomputing items up on eBay recently (right now there's a Heathkit H19 and Commodore B128-80 from my collection).

As I mentioned in a private message before, I am operating an Internet provider with data center in Germany for 20 years now and since this is a very good business I plan to do this some more years. I would be happy to provide a free virtual or a real hardware server for nekochan. I do this for an OS/2 related site http://www.netlabs.org for many years.
