Pete,

i have finished my work on the scripts for import the nekoware package informations into our wiki. Befor pressing the button i would like ask for permission to do :) .

Maybe it make sence to create a sql dump befor we start so that we can revert all the changes if needed. On my local machine it takes 8h for the import. It depends on the number of obsolete tardists and the incredibble time the "shofiles" programm needed for extracting.

The current state looks like http://www.nekoware.net/index.php/Category:Nekoware .

Hmmm..... i see that i cant bypass the captcha check which comes up when a article contains a URL. If its possible to remove the check for some time?. Maybe you would try to set
Code:
$wgEmailConfirmToEdit = true;
$wgShowIPinHeader = false;
$wgDisableAnonTalk = true;

in the LocalSettings.php. These settings prevents the creating of pages without having a account with a confirmed E-Mail address.

regards
Joerg

I'll look into it later this week - I have a severe cold at the moment and don't have the energy to do anything technical.

No need - it's included with IRIX. Just type 'flash' (as root) from IRIX and it will do the rest.

I grew up watching shows like "Movie Magic" on the Discovery channel, which chronicled the transition from practical effects to CG in the early 90's. They showed SGI boxes in use on Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park, and I was hooked.

Exactly the same circumstances myself; I would love to have a collection of "Movie Magic" DVDs. I picked up a Indigo R3000 from Greg Douglas (Reputable Computers) in '95 I think it was - cost me around $1800 for a complete system with a 17" granite monitor and CD-ROM.

Heading to a VFX house in the Presidio this afternoon to pick up a couple more SGI machines :)

You'll need to install patch5086 before you can upgrade IRIX <=6.5.20.

Patch 5086: Installation tools support for overlays

RELEASE NOTES

1. Patch SG0005086 Release Note

This release note describes patch SG0005086 to IRIX
6.5/6.5SE and 6.5.1 to 6.5.20 inclusive.

This patch contains the IRIX 6.5.21 versions of the
installation tools inst, swmgr, showfiles and showprods.
Therefore, IRIX 6.5.21 itself will replace this patch.

If you are using the "live installation" method to upgrade
from any 6.5-based release prior to 6.5.21 to another from
6.5.21 onwards, you must first install this patch to enable
inst to handle certain additions to the format of the
distribution images. If you have 6.5.21 installed on your
system, the required changes are already contained in inst.
Alternatively, a "miniroot install" will allow you to
install versions from 6.5.21 onwards without any patching.
You should be sure to use the miniroot contained in the
distribution to which you are upgrading.

This patch is also useful to install on any 6.5-based
release to take advantage of bug fixes made to the
installation tools (see below.)

ShadeOfBlue wrote: It seems this particular command doesn't need any special keys, so if you could do "serial security off", the bricks would boot normally (although they would probably whine about the mismatched SSN).
I'm probably being too optimistic here :)

It depends on the brick type I guess. I've NUMAlinked two O300s and two O350s so far - each had separate serial numbers and would not power on when cabled together (System Serial Number mismatch message on L1 display and red lamp).

The solution in my case was to enter the L1 of the brick I wanted to update and enter "serial clear". The brick then wiped its local serial, looked over the NUMAlink for the serial in the other brick, grabbed it and reprogrammed itself to this new number (so if you have nodelocked software on one of the bricks make sure you clear the right one).

Maybe it's due to my L1 versions:

Code: Select all

# l2cmd "l1 version"

L1 1.22.6 (Image B), Built 08/07/2003 12:57:04    [2MB image]

It's definitely become difficult to find true bargains on eBay these days - pretty much the only times I do come out ahead are for items with a low BIN that I can find quickly before the flocks descend, items that sellers don't know enough about to properly list or broken items that are easy to repair. Most of the cool stuff I'm looking for has a huge BIN price with no option to bid low, or simply winds up skyrocketing in price due to multiple (insane) bidders. I do a lot more local buying via Craigslist as a result.

So basically yes, I'm open to alternatives :)

If I still had O300s I would have definitely done this - I had to keep them in the closet to cut down the noise level. Now that I have O350s I can keep them out in the room proper.

bplaa.yai wrote: Out of curiosity, could Neko or another O350 (lucky) owner tell us which fan model/part number is used in the 350 ?

Have to get back to you on that - looking at the fans requires shutting the system down (and by extension this very forum!). I don't like to turn it off unless I have to as it runs some pretty important (to me anyway) stuff. Next time I have it open though I'll look - just don't expect it right away :)

scottE wrote: Thank god for archivists.

Agreed, but here is a danger though. For example, there was a well known archivist of ancient CP/M boot media for just about any CP/M machine you could imagine. People would go to him whenever they came across a rare machine and he'd set them up with appropriate boot media.

Then one day he died, and his entire collection went with him. None of it was stored on the Internet, so there were no mirrors. Lots of one of kind software sets are now apparently lost, perhaps forever.

Not to be a downer (mortality is a touchy subject), I just hope that one day you do take the time to get these videos out there so they won't suffer a similar fate :)

Is dbus required? I've had problems with dbus 1.2.1 - it was a prerequisite for building Firefox 3, but no matter what I built it with (MIPSpro/GCC) it always dumps core when the daemon is called.

I ask because it can be disabled with a configure switch; I don't know what it brings to the table though and if it will be missed.

Supposedly this program can do it:

It's neko_bind of course, but my understanding is that by running a local caching nameserver, the local resolver won't need to reach out to a malicious source. At least that was my interpretation of:

Quote:
Run a local DNS cache

In lieu of strong port randomization characteristics in a stub resolver, administrators can protect their systems by using local caching full-service resolvers, both on the client systems and on servers that are topologically close on the network to the client systems, in conjunction with the network segmentation and filtering strategies mentioned above.

http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/800113

This is, of course, what I do here.

Probably just easier to change the maximum allowed characters on the signature line, don't ya think?

(BTW, it's been updated to 500 characters as of this evening).

Looks fantastic on my Onyx2, thanks for sharing it! The only issue I noted is that on my system it segfaults after pressing escape. Not really a big deal though since it's supposed to be shutting down at that point anyway.

I'll post this up on the blog in a bit.

The segfault could be something specific to InfiniteReality. Incidentally, Die Planeten does the same for me on exit. Not a big deal though, the programs still work as expected - just figured I'd mention it. Maybe someone else with IR can confirm.

If it's 300MHz, it's a RM5271 - there's no such thing as a R5000@300MHz. The O2 (and IRIX) will report it as a R5000, but that's just because it doesn't know any better ;)

As for spam, Postgrey does help a lot - still get a few 419/lottery e-mails that actually retransmit instead of dropping the connection right after the send, but it filters out nearly all of the drug pushers.

Absolutely - that's essentially my reasoning when I went with a second dual CPU O300. Gave me a couple extra slots plus additional RAM for comparatively little cash. The extra CPUs weren't bad either ;)

The O350 is a pretty nice step up in that you get three open PCI slots per brick, plus you have on-board gigabit ethernet which saves a slot. If you have two O350s and are starved for slots, you can optionally remove the second IO9 - this gives you a total of seven free PCI slots in just two bricks.

I found neko_strace in /incoming the other day - who uploaded this package? There were two tardists:

neko_strace-4.5.17.tardist
neko_strace-4.5.17.tardist-norqs

I moved the .tardist file over to /beta, but left the -norqs in /incoming as there's no explanation of what it is.

Anyone?
