IRIX and Software

Upgrading to 6.5.22m from 6.5.6m?

I recently got an O2 running 6.5.6m, and would like to upgrade to 6.5.22m. I've downloaded the three overlay .tar.gzs from SupportFolio, but even loading all three into swmgr, there are still 56 installation conflicts.

I'd go ahead and install anyway, but I would like NFS support and such...what can I do to resolve the conflicts? It seems that first upgrading with an older maintenance release would do the trick, but I can't find any earlier than 6.5.22m, on SupportFolio or on the web. Can anyone offer a suggestion?
You'll need to install patch5086 before you can upgrade IRIX <=6.5.20.

Patch 5086: Installation tools support for overlays

RELEASE NOTES

1. Patch SG0005086 Release Note

This release note describes patch SG0005086 to IRIX
6.5/6.5SE and 6.5.1 to 6.5.20 inclusive.

This patch contains the IRIX 6.5.21 versions of the
installation tools inst, swmgr, showfiles and showprods.
Therefore, IRIX 6.5.21 itself will replace this patch.

If you are using the "live installation" method to upgrade
from any 6.5-based release prior to 6.5.21 to another from
6.5.21 onwards, you must first install this patch to enable
inst to handle certain additions to the format of the
distribution images. If you have 6.5.21 installed on your
system, the required changes are already contained in inst.
Alternatively, a "miniroot install" will allow you to
install versions from 6.5.21 onwards without any patching.
You should be sure to use the miniroot contained in the
distribution to which you are upgrading.

This patch is also useful to install on any 6.5-based
release to take advantage of bug fixes made to the
installation tools (see below.)

Yes, that was the first thing I did. However, I've downloaded, gunzipped, and untarred the three overlay .tar.gz files (IRIX6.5.22_1of3 and etc.), and after adding all three of them in swmgr, there are still numerous unresolved conflicts, for things such as NFS and etc. My question is, should I first upgrade to an intermediate release, in between 6 and 22? And if so, where do I obtain one of those, since SGI 's website no longer hosts any overlays earlier than 22?
Are you also loading your original IRIX Foundation CDs (1 & 2), too? If not, please do so, and the conflicts will be reduced.

Depending what else you may already have on your system, you may also need to load the Development Foundation CD, the Development Libraries CD, and perhaps an Applications CD.
I don't actually have the foundations CDs, unfortunately; picked the machine up from a school before they could pitch it. Are there any cheap sources out there? eBay looks none too appealing on a free-computers budget. :?

Try it in our favorite P2P network.

About the conflicts... if you just load a distribution from the overlays without any modification the installer just works in the way for a normal installation rather than a update. That means:
If your current installation isnt exactly "standard" or just dont match the current selection your get an conflict...
If you have uninstalled a package which is marked for default you get an conflict....
If you select a package for installation which wasnt already installed you get an conflict....

So without having both foundation cds you can solve the conflicts. The only way is to upgrade the existing packages without installing something new. So read the docs or try something like "keep *; install upgrade;go"
