Not sure what model but its big and square (not as big but roughly Crimson shaped) that is supposed to have dual procs in it. It boots to some kind of prom but after that I'm lost. My question is what are my OS options and what are the Pro/Con's of each. I understand it will run Tru64 but possible licencing issues? Also NT but I'd like to forgo that. Anyone know how the linux or Open/Net/Free BSD support is for these? The guy I got it from was a BSD developer with multiple Alpha machines so there is hope there.

no question, if there is one always use the dedicated unix which would be tru64 here.

probably the best combo ever made :D
if you wanna experience the very definition of 'workflow' ... you're right here.

no, the cage is different and so is the midplane.
normally trying to turn an origin into an onyx doesn't pay out.

you might also wanna use the search. there were several topics about this.

do yourself a big favor and stay with maya + the origin :D

What professional software is still out there that supports Irix, I may be beating a dead horse, I guess. Thanks.

of course. that's an individual choice.
you have to decide if you 'need' maya above 6.5 or not. anyhow if you decide you do need v8 you can definitely forget blender.

I think Foetz' "yes, and" was an and of support- since you can't get support from $ORIG_COMPANY it's a good thing that support is available elsewhere in an informal manner. My PI/Indigo/IRIS 3k is unsupported by the vendor, so I'm very glad to have any support elsewhere, even if it is "unofficial" Another point in it's favor- unofficial support is usually a little bit less expensive  .

exactly! thanks once again for the long version :D

as a personal user it doesn't matter what you're using as long as you're happy with it.

however commercial usage depends on several things. one of them is the desired outcome. another is reliability.
pros (no matter which sector) don't upgrade blindly just to have the new version as so many home users do. instead they analyze what they need, what a new version offers, the costs and e.g. the technical risks of an upgrade (plugin compatibility issues for example).
besides that there're many more issues to consider before going for a new or other version. every transition has its pros and cons so there is no 'normal' way. it is totally subjective.

Would you have argued the same way if I'd have talked about Photoshop instead of Maya?

from Photoshop version 6 there has been literally no major change except ability to edit more layers at once. I can imagine myself working with photoshop version 5 as good as with cs3.
although, new "features" may save some time, but they are not crucially necessary.

the main difference is the speed and the size. cs3 compared to v5 is much bigger and much slower

while using the open-file window i get console errors anyhow it seems like they don't affect the app

Hmm... Something's definitely wrong with the offscreen-rendering then; I'll try and add some options to the next version for selecting different GLX visuals. Thanks for the feedback.

you're welcome. i'm gonna try some more specific tasks if you like. just let me know
i think that's gnome and not x11.
try a native x11 app like xterm

why?
what kind of error shows up when running as a regular user?

EDIT:
yeah, seems to be a rights issue. chowned the whole folder and it worked fine.
strange since i didn't touch the rights. just packaged as always.

anyway so please chmod 755 run-mozilla.sh and check the rights.

sorry for that. will check next time.

What is patch 5086 - where is is available?

just from where you got 6.5.22

So it seems that the risks are pretty low and should not affect my 3D apps that use FlexLM liscencing.

no, the lics will be fine

I plan on swapping my root drive for a faster one, so I will perform that first so I have a complete backup of the system disk before I upgrade.

good idea.
anyhow i've never had that few problems with upgrades on any other os by far

I haven't changed that file yet. I was hoping I could get my command line to work without altering the original file. I tried everything but the "-c $COLOR_FILE" flag is not recognized by the program.
So I guess the only option left is to directly modify the "Desktop.rsrc" file in the /usr/Softimage/Soft3D_4.0/3D/rsrc directory.

i've never been able to run soft without modifying several original things :P

i used prisms on an indigo2 with an r4400.
it ran better than any version of xsi on any machine

well what else was interesting?
the composer was a separate app and called ice.
the version i had still had the old irix binary format.
the workflow was somewhat between lightwave and houdini.
the renderer was clear and nice. better results than alias imo but not as sharp as lightwave.
...

maybe i remember more tomorrow :D

sgtprobe wrote: Looking forward to it, this is very interesting. :)

yeah, well, what can i add?
since my version still was the old binary format (coff) it's been some time ago so my memory might not be totally correct.

the interface was mostly green and gray.
i'm not sure which version i got. but i wasn't the last cause it had coff binaries.
the licensing was kinda weird. completely different compared to most other apps.
it had a renderman interface already.
the renderer was called mantra just like houdini.
it had its own install script. it did not use inst.
it had a morphing module called mojo.

i'll add more in case i happen to recall more

no matter where this ends it's a nice find anyway :P
