a true classic. what kind of disk(s) do you have in there?

the octane has one advantage over the tezro: mgras. there's quite a bunch of stuff that doesn't work so well with vpro so unless you have a late onyx model an impact octane is the max you can get

vishnu wrote: if you want to run applications like Maya or Pro/E or Shake, having VPro is hugely beneficial...

sure, those that do work fine with vpro run well of course

a bit more info that's actually on topic :P

as it happened often in the 90s the cgi parts of jurassic park were a mix of alias and softimage. the classic labor division was alias for the models and softimage for animation and jurassic park was no different. here're some pics and videos:

Code: Select all

chkconfig desktop on

after the installation should do the trick. however the (formerly) discreet programs do what they do for good reason so changing stuff that's set by the installer might cause problems

that's not enough. the installer changes global settings

grab the attachment of the post linked to below for large screen shots of alias/2. might just as well be the only ones you'll ever find

bushnrvn wrote: What kinds of programs can I expect to be able to run with 1GB RAM, ESSI\MXE?

everything. an octane mxe is quite at the end of the irix evolution so pretty much everything that's available for irix runs there very nicely

oh yes, what a nice find :D

does open64 run on irix?
r-a-c.de
TeamBlackFox wrote: On that note, screw Open64. Its dead.

and doesn't run on irix so i'm not sure what reason Kumba had for recommending it

sure, a va_copy substitute would come in handy in some situations

well you asked for it:
TeamBlackFox wrote: You're free to suggest programs

Kumba suggested open64, others pointed out that it'll likely fail and why. then armanox suggested clang and ivelegacy would like to have an ada compiler and the geany ide ... and so on.
this is how a discussion works. if you don't like that then you might have to be more precise in your first post about what kind of suggestions are welcome

Thats not a free-for-all for tangential discussion

hehe, that's how it is in forums :P
if you want it limited then limit it right from the start. i'd suggest to edit your first post and clearly say what sort of suggestions you expect and in which form

please do list those that affect irix. i'm sure that'd be very interesting for everybody running irix.
heartbleed for example is not a problem.
r-a-c.de
security and privacy awareness is not a bad thing per se but i totally agree with you that the priorities are what matters and these got quite off recently.
the sensationalism has greatly increased and 98% of all people who suddenly panicked when heartbleed was all over the news have no idea what that even is let alone are able to tell how likely it actually is that a complete data set of for example their account of some site would be found out and used against them.

no, i meant issues that affect irix

good for irix since none of that matters there. just assuming people are not running java applets in netscape 4.x :P

if you just wanna start fresh there's a faster way:

hook the disk up to some bsd/linux/whatever, run "shred" on the raw device just for a few seconds, put it back into the sgi and it'll look like it'd have never been used with irix. then go on with fx and mkfs_xfs as if the disk was brand new

we did but not this version. however if you don't need utf8 or xft ours will do :-)
