I just read the other day that the coolant used in those late liquid cooled G5's is especially toxic. I did have one for a while, but luckily it didn't leak - gave it away to another Nekochanner a couple years back.

Actually she's not a wicked witch at all, we spent 17 years married & a few years before & I still love her in a way.. but I just ran out of loft space and had to move on.

BUT, she's sold the house and emptied the loft, my daughter sent me the picture below of [some] of the stuff, well:

I see an 6100 System keyboard from my old IBM RT (I wonder if I still have that.
Boxed Sanyo PC 8086 (I think) dual floppies.
Some SGI Software, OS/2 Warp Red, Blue and Connect or Warp 4.
COMPUTER BATTLESHIPS!! WOO HOO!
Sega Saturn Steering Wheel.
A Christmas tree stand..
Can't make out what the unit is under the black box, looks like a cable has been cut off.

I'm in the U.K.
We've got a guy at our work doing tech support who collects euro power cables that come with new PC's.
Instead of throwing them away, he strips them down to copper and sells the copper to metal merchants.
Apparently if you give them the power cables you get less for them than for just the copper.

So, spent the day going through stuff..
Mac Classic works fine.. Never checked the date, but macs are so hippy, they probably don't care.
The SUN IPC has no hard drive, but does have BNC / AUI Ethernet and it's fully populated with simms (no idea how much).*
The SUN LX would not boot with a failure of Date/MAC Address and loopback issue (guessed it would be due to the clock). I had checked inside both machines for sign of leaky corrosion beforehand and all looked good.
So brought the LX back home and plugged into my INDIGO monitor and it failed to display! (13w3??? WTF) so, in my booty I also had a BELKIN to VGA convertor.. used that on a Sony SDM and it displayed fine.
Set the NVRAM to default and booted.
Excellent, logged in with my current admin type password and I was in to CDE. Set the Gateway, Nameserver and new IP address and it's up and running... BUT BY FUCK IT'S SLOW!! *I'm not sure I want to turn on the IPC considering how slow the LX is. It has CG6 built in and a 100MB Ethernet SBUS card that works fine. Found helloworld.c and come program I had written for coursework and can't make head nor tail of it!

Software wise, most versions of OS/2, and Netware and very old MAC system 7 stuff, also Lotus 123 for UNIX.. every UNIX except IRIX, SOLARIS & AIX PHAH!
An interesting Pioneer MSX system with a separate keyboard.
No RT as yet.

Oh and possibly the greatest find.. my INDY CAM!!!
Plugged in now, and it's spookily good!

Lots of serial, SCSI, strange cables.. all in all an excellent days hunting!

I would, but only have 1 SGI and I have no idea how to get images of other machines.

On another note, yes the SUN LX lost it's date, but also lost the mac address and hostid. There are no stickers on the box with any info, anyone know if these are held in files on the system somewhere, it's SUNOS 5.7

Yes, you can install IRIX on a burnt piece of toast if you put the effort in..

You should carry out a resetenv [???? help.. can't recall] before you start the install.

Actually check Ian Maplesons site for good install guides.

OK, not sure if this will work, but I have a vague recollection I have done it before:
Turn the INDIGO ON
When the Amber light changes from Orange to Green hit ESC a few times.
Press 5 (At this point you should be in the PROM
Type setenv console g
press return/enter
type boot
press return/enter

You will be doing this blind, but it may work.
I'll try it myself tomorrow and check if I have the commands correct. If it works, you should at least be able to dispense the need for a serial cable.

What is not clear to me if it has been really tested on IP30/Octane2 with success.

three levels of compliance
  • 1) hardware side, IP30, XIO_PCI_shoebox
  • 2) firmware side, IP30 mobo, the last revision of everything
  • 3) software side, more specifically if Irix v6.5.27 is enough

oh well, then there is the Application side, where I'd like to hear a few WaveEditor Apps. The provided links above sometimes works, sometimes is broken, Yesterday I had success for just 40 seconds, so I just read a list of "something" but then the page disappeared again, next time I will save with Firefox

I cannot find any info if this is compatible with my 285? It looks a nice price. Anyone confirm

So, I have had for some months, 2 Octanes sitting on my desk sharing a keyboard and mouse via a KVM, perfect.
Under the desk was an Octane 1. The Octane 1 never really got used, so I thought today, I'll swap the Octane2 that I turn on regularly with my o2 to save electricity etc.. if required I turn on the relegated Octane2 and set the display to the o2.. simple.. the Octane 1 goes in the loft!

The mouse on the o2 doesn't work with the KVM.. WHY THE FUCK NOT!!!!! GRRRRR!!!

It's never mattered, either machine on or off, never mattered if the kvm was pointing to the off machine while I powered up the other.. it was just darn perfect!

Now, sharing my PC & Power5 USB over KVM does require I focus the mouse on the Power5 on boot up.. but after that it's fine.

It's just so fscking annoying AJ!!!

I'll test it out with my R5000 o2 which in all honest seemed like a tank for reliability! Maybe it's just this particular o2.

Anyway.. I have brought home a Pentium 4 with a rather cool case.. badged CyberMaXX

The Tavern drive is picked on this and I'm thinking I may put OS/2 on it, maybe server and see if I can set up an NIS domain or similar for it.

Fans a bit noisy, but I'll get that replaced, might swap out the o2 for it since I bet the KVM will work fine, but I was having a bit of fun with smoke and the indy cam ported through the o2 last night.. so I may have forgiven it.

Still haven't got the Sound Blaster working in the original 586 project.

So it's like six pence in a pie, 12 shillings in a sixpence, four pounds in a litre and half a gallon in a haypenny ?

I never could get that English money thing straight

Decimal hamei old chap, in 4 hours I'd have spent a pound, which is 100 pence, which contains 2 lots of 50pence, 5 lots of 20pence, 4 lots of 25 pence, 50 lots of 2pence and of course back to 100 pennies.

Shillings and stuff changed the year after I was born thank god, now (although argued by older people as easier) was probably the most complicated good for nothing monetary system in the world, I mean WTF is 3 & 6pence..

This year (possibly) we are getting a new plastic pound note (or £5), it meant to make the money last longer.. I just don't see how that can work in my house, as soon as I have a fiver, someone has spent it.
