A few things here, on an o2 using the standard svga out, you don't need to worry about Synce On Green. There may be a possibility the Console (in the PROM) output is set to 'd' and 'g' meaning that it will not display anything until it passes diag.

You may need a serial cable.

I think (without restarting my o2) if you fire it up an type:
5
SETENV console d

Then reboot, you may possibly et something.

A lot of you guys and girls are from overseas and have probably never heard of a little team of men called Aston Villa.

If you have no allegiance to a football team in the UK, can I please ask you spare a positive thought for my little team (owned by an American and supported by Prince William, his son George, Tom Hanks to name a few) Aston Villa.

We are in the fsking shite! HELP!!!

uunix's advice might fix the problem, but the problem might also be that the O2 doesn't know what to do with a 2560 x 1440 resolution display. Is there some way to set the display to use a lower resolution or to use a different display? You might try setting your display to run at 1280x1024 @60Hz or even 1024x768 @60Hz, if possible.

SGI has a lot of documentation at its Techpubs site, including an O2 hardware guide .

PS. O2s do output a SOG signal, so while many modern displays will show the O2 desktop, if they are not truly SOG compatible, the display will have a green tint. For what it is worth, I just plugged an R5k O2 into an older, non-SOG Dell display, and I took a screenshot of the supported resolutions . Notice the green tint.

josehill, where did you get that resolution from? I can't see it in the OP?

o2s do not worry about SOG, I could plug mine into a microwave and it would work. Any monitor will work. If I'm wrong I will eat humble pie and stand in the corner.

I looked up the specs of petterson's display on the Dell website .

What you looked up sounds like the max, I think all monitors will display 1280x1024 etc heck I may be wrong. I've never heard of a monitor that wont go down to required res automatically. BUT.. if the o2 (or any unix machine) is set to a certain display, then that of cause is a different matter.

I've used SGI for years now, I did my C&G C/C++ cert on my Indy back in the late 90s and then used Maya (o2 R5000) as a hobby, now I use SMOKE for my new hobby of video editing (Octane2 + 02 + Indy).

Regardless of the money I keep spending, I have to remind myself .. IT'S A FSKING HOBBY!!

I searched these forums and found an answer but for the heck of it I still can't find it in any dist

The Indy I put together some months ago was a quick and dirty install and lacks sysmgr.

What disk is this on?

Alternatively, and the reason I want sysmgr, is that I want to use /dev/ttyd1 to connect to something but returns an error because I think it's being used:
#cu -l /dev/ttyd1
Connect failed: CAN'T ACCESS DEVICE

It's set correctly in /etc/devices, but I recall when setting up ttyd2 I had to remove all traces of the port being in use for modems etc.

6.3 was specifically built for the o2, so it does seem strange.
What if... Installing 6.5 has updated the PROM and it's incompatible with 6.3? Just a wild guess here.

Do you have a serial cable? Maybe check what going on with that?

Nicely put Ian.
I've 2 o2s and I never expect super fast performance, but they are.. ok in my book, and the form factor, the CDROM etc and they way it plays with the 1600sw is just what I want. I don't want noisy and big for a lot of what I do (or have been doing over the years) I have my Octane2 for that.

I went from an R5000 195mhz to chicaneuk's R12000 (with more memory) and to be honest, it seemed like a clean install feel. It wasn't massively faster, but it hadn't had the build up of years of crap being done to it like my R5000 had.

Pros and Cons for me, Form Factor, Noise, Power Consumption, 1600sw and cuteness.

I have coming (if it ever arrives) an Octane (1) 250MHz R10000 Single.

Now, I purchased it for reasons that are not going to require super performance obviously, but you know what it's like, you're looking at upgrades before you've even plugged it in.

So I just want to confirm compatibility and if it's worth the £30 it will cost to upgrade it to a 300MHz R12000 CPU Single.

It's going to be used as a 24/7 YP(NIS)/Backup/File Server for my IRIX machines.

I do have the option of dual 195MHz CPU that's in my loft.

Thanks.. Up The Villa!

I've got a 285, really nice machine, but I haven't really got round to doing anything with it yet, I plan to run PostgreSQL on it. The only thing I've done, is put AIX 7 on it.

And yes, my system is so quiet I have to check the green light on the front to see if I've left it on.

One of the things I didn't learn quick enough was the 'on the fly' disk repartitioning. Had I known about it, I possible wouldn't have stayed at AIX 5.whatever.

I wouldn't have thought so, especially with a small nis. I doubt either that I'll bench mark it, since the CPU will probably come before I've got round to setting up the yp ect.

For what it will be doing, I doubt it would be worthwhile, but for £30..

I suppose the other question would be, since I have dual 195 R10000's, would that make a difference?

I've bought the CPU now anyway.

OK so I was just thinking about my machines getting stolen.

What if we created a script that ftp'd to your location, if the external IP changed or you couldn't ping a neighbouring machine (this wouldn't work if they stole the whole of your network and left in tack) with a header "I'VE BEEN STOLEN", thus giving the 'at the time' the culprits IP address?

I'm sure my quick idea has many flaws and many things missing, but would it be worth a service?

I've written this (although not to do with being stolen) in C# quite easily for servers that have DHCP external WAN addresses and email a recipient if the external address changes so that I can RDP into and run as a service.

I worry about my babies!

Thoughts?

Team, I never suggested doing it in C# in Irix, 'm well aware of what C# is and the platform it lies on. My example was that I had done something similar in C#.

Now, see you have hit on something there. SGI boxes look nice, so I recon they would steel them. But, the majority are set to Console G which doesn't boot if the keyboard isn't present??

But lets say we got past that stage. They stole it and it booted.

What if they were on a different network.. first failure, unless you couldn't ping anything around you so you switched to a network until you could..
