The collected works of uunix - Page 1

So, it's been such a long time since I tinkered with my SGI and even visited this site. I've got a fair few SGI boxen, 99.9% of them stuck with my ex-wife. All I've had left for the last 6 years is my 128Mb O2 with SW1600 option display.

Two weeks back I downloaded an app for my phone called SHPOCK. It's a simple location based selling app. I searched SGI and it came back with an interesting result. £30 (UK POUNDS) for Octane 2 with a model number.

Location, London, collection only and I live 100 odd miles away in Birmingham. Someone had asked what it was, the owner replied 'HARD DISK'. I could not get the owner to deliver. So I had to go down. Please note that, this story is in no way a mocking of the sellers, some people know things others know other things etc. So I went down.

Apparently, mother worked at some film studio in London that went bust and was given (legally) the BOX!

I gave them an extra £10 for a takaway or some wine, and put it in the car. I knew (and had told them), that I suspected this machine was worth more than £30, but they'd had no success on ebay, possible comination, they couldn't describe it and they wouldn't deliver.

I took a quick glance as I put the seat belt round it and noticed a few things.. it had 2 DVI outs and a DAT drive. Add that to the fact it was from a film company and my journey home was alight with images of part made films, excellent media softwere etc.

Got home at 9pm and plugged it in..

No root passwd.. excellent, had a look round, found nothing software interesting.

The hinv though...

Tingo, I have the complete internal workings of Blade 2000, motherboard, dual 900Mhz CPU, XV200[can't recall it, but a super Graphics Card], 2Gb Ram, PCi3 card with drivers etc, 4 port Ethernet etc.. also power supply etc.. everything except the case. I'd have to get everything out for a complete inventory.

Obviously this doesn't help your problem at the moment, but would help my shed space..

I dismantled it not long after Oracle took over sun..

Let me know if you need anything.

So, tomorrow I pick up 2 Octanes 1s that were auctioned on ebay as dead for £30. They look utter crap and the only reason I bid on them is that that are located in Stourbridge.. So if I go upstairs and look out the window, I can probably see the building they are housed in.

Worst scenario.. everything is buggered and I get some hdd cages & skins.

Best.. mmm cool software, working systems.. etc etc...

Excellent Nongrato. My first (owning it myself) was I think either the Indigo Elan or it may have been a brown personal Iris 4d[?] I can't recall which came first. I know that of all my SGI machines, the Indigo stands as a Fav, alongside one of my Indys, and now my Octane 2. 700Kms.. oooh that's some love.

Not sure what CPUs are, I haven't matched with any pictures or taken the CPU apart that much.. the are probably 4Mhz 8080s

Skins.. well.. Door has fell off one, one was dropped and the board removing (plunger/grip/lever)s in each corner has been SMOSHED!

To be honest they both look like they served on a North Sea Oil Rig... in the open!
Still on reflection...

Cost.. £30..

Fuel Cost.. £0.10

Experience of taking Octane apart.. 10/10 No idea of cost..

Replacing my broken Bar Light (On my super duper Octane 2).. + £10 ?

Spare parts for the future... £100 I reckon...

OOOH I forgot to mention.. joy of meeting the owners of the shop and the Westie K9 where I picked them up from.. + 10 points..

So as crap as they are.. It's been a positive if yet slightly disappointing (at the moment) transaction.

BTW.. did you get round to running Jeleo?

Doesn't have to be this exact one..

Have a DmediaPro 5 and found this, looking at using it to enable me to connect all sorts of things.

Would it be any good? I'm thinking, I could input my PS3 or other HDMi, output on my HDMi TV whilst doing other cools things at the same time? I'm thinking.. use it as a media hub?

What would I want to do with it? Well who knows, I have a billion dollars worth of SGI kit and I don't know yet where that's going to lead. It's all CHAOS theory atm.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts..

I had a 540 some years back, very nice machine, but iirc, the Linux was flaky and had no desktop gui. Wished I'd kept the case though.

Talking of MLA's has anyone run a 1600sw with MLA from a VBOB (OCTANE) ? I'm aware that the combination works without the VBOB.

For anyone who wants more info on this. hermessgi is correct
edit the file /usr/Softimage/Soft3D_4.0/.softimage400 <I presume, the 4.0 and 400 are dependant on your version of softimage.
add the following line for 1600sw monitors.

setenv SI_SCREENRES SI_1600X1024

This works a treat on my o2 with 1600sw.

Open a shell (Top left - Tool Chest - Desktop - Open unix shell)
type the following and press enter/return
netstat -ia

Under the column Address, you will possibly see a bunch of letters & numbers segmented by 5 : (that is five colons)
for example 6c:33:a9:34:c6:1e (this is the mac of the machine using your ip address 192.168.0.4)
If the above example is NOT in your Address list then this states that something else on your network has that IP address.
The error message you are seeing is NOT to do with the host name.

Interestingly, I ran the same command on my R5000 O2 and there was no mac address displayed. On my R12000 O2 it was displayed and so I booted up the INDY and that did display the mac address.

Thanks jan-jaap.

I've moved on a bit now, have a Pro VHS box and genlock generator.

running xtdigvidtest passes 7 test but fails on ODMA ?

I have mine cabled up like described EffectsEditing2007_Hardware_Setup_SGITezro-Octane2.pdf (have tried the way from SGI documents). I'm getting no output on any SD port.

SD input comes from Video (I can confirm that that works as it is displayed on the SONY PVM and also the capture card in my mac).
Output goes to above mentioned monitor and the capture device in the mac.
I suppose the question is, if I have something going to SD input, should I get something out of SD outputs? What app can I use in IRIX that will display what is coming in?

xtdigvid_confidence passes fine.

It's possible I don't know the correct question to ask at this time. I have been reading a lot, but in the main, it's telling me I have things set up OK ?

Cheers for help, sorry, it's such an open ended question.
