The collected works of uunix - Page 19

I know this may not help your original issue, but I turned my back on CD installs a few years ago and setup network install repositories on most of my SGI machines. If you do it right, create a directory with all the relevant files in a single dist, then installs take 20 mins or so.

As for burning disks, I only ever managed this on a mac using MacX DVD Ripper. Interestingly a few years back I searched this forum for how to do it and found a post I had made many years earlier with the required settings.

But no Windows I'm afraid.

This can't be right, /etc/TIMEZONE works fine, so something must be altering it or overriding the settings.. have you looked at you SYSLOG or captured your bootup output via terminal?

This is my TIMEZONE

We are stuck in a catch 22.
We need a site, not affiliated with neckochan whatsoever run by person[s] willing to take the chance.
Everyone needs to know about it, but we cannot advertise it here.
And here is where everyone comes for SGI related info...

What we need is .. 'the purple web'.. or blue, indigo, green.

I feel dirty even talking about this stuff.

For historical reasons I chose to name my disk images *.efs. The ones from archive.org are *.img. All irrelevant as long as it's a straight 'dd' stye copy of the entire disc.

Well using Linux I did get a disk to burn but it still isn't being read correctly by the indigo 2. I cant use DINA because the Ethernet on the motherboard is dead. I can mount the images on Linux with these instructions, but when I burn i, even on a fresh disk, It doesn't work. Is there a known working tool for burning irix images?

OK, depending on the country you are in, (I'm in the UK) Send me a disk and I will do an install on one of my o2's? Or Someone in the US may pick up on this idea?

Well, I went and purchased a very very cheap Silkworm 3850, I thought it's a good gamble to get my hands dirty, understanding that it probably hadn't got the admin/root password.
It arrived today, I powered it up and tried connecting to the serial, no joy there. Correct cables are at home.
So I connected it to a small network hub along with my Origin and ran 'snoop' watching for any addresses and viola, in a few seconds, 10.10.10.33 was asking whois 10.10.10.1..
Then I set my windows box to have an additional IP in that range, and tried to open up the web front end, no joy, the java was out of date and I'm not messing with policy settings to allow it, so I used putty to telnet in and bingo.. telnet session..
But alas no default passwords worked and I don't have a support contract, so it would be painful to get a reset image.
Then I read about taking out the flash card and resetting the password files with a flash card reader, which I have at home. So I have taken the unit apart and have the flash drive. The process is just replacing the /etc/passwd files in both partitions with the passwd.default file.
Now, I do have a USB flash reader, but the writer of the instructions stated you required a LINUX machine. Alas, I do not have one, but does anyone know, if a USB flash drive reader would work in my FUEL with 6.5.30 installed?
If it doesn't I'll just build myself a LINUX box, but I would rather not.

This one is quite, cheap, but my last purchase from the US incurred a large postage fee and a back hander to the HMRC, so anyone have one the UK and cheap as well, because the A5000 isn't worth the money really to restore it back.

I'd do it, create a software repository so to speak, but in the words of black adders Baldrick, I'd have to come up with a really cunning plan..

Step 1.. a new line, fast and not registered to my company or me or my house, possibly to my Grand Mother, many years deceased now.. kidding on that, she never even owned a computer.
Step 2, ensure it was a DHCP line, create a mailing list that notified people of the new address.
Step 3, Encryption, soooo nobody knew what the traffic was, or maybe VPN type connection (probably have to get some hardware to do that).
Step 4, Members only.
Step 5, Move to a country with no extradition laws.

Probability of Failure (POF) equates to (FF + SRFF) - (QHM + KPE)

FF = FSCK FACTOR. (How inconvenient it is if it fails now.. that is, was you planning on doing something more interesting than fault finding)
SRFF = SOME RANDOM FSCKING FACTOR. (The seed of this number is possibly based on how much sun light is left in your day - The less sunlight the higher the number).
QHM = Quantity of Hail Mary's you perform before you turn on ignition.
KPE = Karma Points Earned (letting people out at junctions (more points for buses) during the day).

Thanks for the honour Vishnu :oops: , but it may be miss-placed somewhat.

My VBOB usage has been strictly limited to using it with discreet products and if I get signal present output when I serial into the VBOB I'm generally happy.

What I do know, you can see serial 2 is receiving something by console access v --> s
Also in the init.cfg of a discreet product you can set the video line to serial1 or serial2 but not serial1and2 like you can with the output.

Probably not very helpful I'm afraid.

I do love the wife, and the kids, but this weekend coming they are buggering off to Devon without me... :D

So what's planned.. Well.. finally I get to re-do the office, including the tri monitor stand for my SGI monitors.
Out goes 1 fuel, in the loft.
Sitting on the desk will be 3 Octane 2s, two of which will be connected to SD/HD for media input, the third for pure editing.
One Fuel (800MHz) will stay, and hopefully I will have received my V12 for it and can finally get round to getting the DM6 to work with discreet.
The IBM Power5 will get a life back, hopefully (again) being able to connect via the KVM to a USB PS/2 adaptor.
Some PC's are going.
Replacing the Panasonic Ag-7750 SVHS player for a DVcam player + simple home VHS player.

It's going to be better than a trip to Disney world for me, and it's just Colin, Steve (my dogs) and myself.

oh and I have to fix the electrics in the kitchen, and get rid of the extension cable that runs though the sink.. :oops:

Well that's the plan anyway. (I'm sure there will be a few beers involved also).

Can you compile anything in C#?

If so.. Create a project with a form
Add a timer - 'timerSetKey' in my example.
Add a label - no real need to do this, mine is called 'labelResponse' but it's add some feed back.
Throw this in the form .cs file

Code: Select all

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.ComponentModel;
using System.Data;
using System.Drawing;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;
using System.Threading.Tasks;
using System.Windows.Forms;
using System.Runtime.InteropServices;

namespace StopScreenSaver
{
public partial class FormStopScreenSaver : Form
{
public static int iCount=0;
[FlagsAttribute]
public enum EXECUTION_STATE : uint
{
ES_SYSTEM_REQUIRED = 0x00000001,
ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED = 0x00000002,
// Legacy flag, should not be used.
// ES_USER_PRESENT   = 0x00000004,
ES_AWAYMODE_REQUIRED = 0x00000040,
ES_CONTINUOUS = 0x80000000,
}

public static class SleepUtil
{
[DllImport("kernel32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, SetLastError = true)]
public static extern EXECUTION_STATE SetThreadExecutionState(EXECUTION_STATE esFlags);
}

public void PreventSleep()
{
if (SleepUtil.SetThreadExecutionState(EXECUTION_STATE.ES_CONTINUOUS
| EXECUTION_STATE.ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED
| EXECUTION_STATE.ES_SYSTEM_REQUIRED
| EXECUTION_STATE.ES_AWAYMODE_REQUIRED) == 0) //Away mode for Windows >= Vista
SleepUtil.SetThreadExecutionState(EXECUTION_STATE.ES_CONTINUOUS
| EXECUTION_STATE.ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED
| EXECUTION_STATE.ES_SYSTEM_REQUIRED); //Windows < Vista, forget away mode
}
public static int iKeyPressed =0;
public FormStopScreenSaver()
{
InitializeComponent();
timerSetKey.Enabled = true;
}

private void timerSetKey_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
labelResponse.Text = string.Format("Count {0}",iCount.ToString());
labelResponse.Update();
PreventSleep();
iCount++;
}
}
}

StopScreenSaver is the name of my form.
Don't forget to set the timer to an interval relating to a second, set the tick event and ensure it is enabled by default else you will have to do it on form load or when the form initializes.
Add some nice Icons, and colours and away you go. Tested, proved and stolen!
Must admit I haven't tested it running as non admin, but I don't see an issue.

PM me if you want the project sent to you.

No, if the chip is dead and I disconnect it will it boot? I was under the impression that the system wouldn't boot if it was removed, so maybe it is dead and that's the issue? I don't know.

My thought on this was just to reset the darn thing in all honesty.
