SGI: Hardware

So, I have had for some months, 2 Octanes sitting on my desk sharing a keyboard and mouse via a KVM, perfect.
Under the desk was an Octane 1. The Octane 1 never really got used, so I thought today, I'll swap the Octane2 that I turn on regularly with my o2 to save electricity etc.. if required I turn on the relegated Octane2 and set the display to the o2.. simple.. the Octane 1 goes in the loft!

The mouse on the o2 doesn't work with the KVM.. WHY THE FUCK NOT!!!!! GRRRRR!!!

Both machines on at the same time? Maybe mine is a dodgy KVM, but I do find X unhappy at sharing. The RiscPC on the fourth port doesn't seem to mind.

I2, Fuel and x86-Linux on three of four ports. I can only use one at a time else the mouse-cursor tends to freeze (or at best wander erratically). And of course if I'm too slow in selecting the relevant port at power-on the SGIs complain about lack of keyboard/mouse.

It's never mattered, either machine on or off, never mattered if the kvm was pointing to the off machine while I powered up the other.. it was just darn perfect!

Now, sharing my PC & Power5 USB over KVM does require I focus the mouse on the Power5 on boot up.. but after that it's fine.

It's just so fscking annoying AJ!!!

I'll test it out with my R5000 o2 which in all honest seemed like a tank for reliability! Maybe it's just this particular o2.

IRIX-connected PS/2 keyboards use the less common scan code 3 . In my experience (admittedly with a limited number of KVMs), IRIX boxes work pretty well when connected to a PS/2 KVM... as long as IRIX boxes are the *only* ones connected.

Yup it's a 2 port KVM.. and yes it worked fine with 2 Octanes.. It's the o2 that fscked! It is now a horrid machine I think!

Could also mention the plugs frequently get loose on the O2 and the Octane.

My O2 worked fine on a KVM whilst sharing with a Fuel and an Indigo2. Possibly a dodgy O2
