Um, what's the magic incantation for doing that now? Doubtless yet another of the many reasons why Unix Must Die.

I'm going to give that discussion a very wide berth... Certainly not something to address in your hinv thread.

I'd probably wind up looking at Gentoo - at least there you know they've planned for the average user to build from source... Then you've just got to see if the networking was disabled and reverse the settings.

I'm not sure if a *BSD desktop would have the X network bits enabled or not. I reverted from PC-BSD to Fedora due to dire KVM issues, but it mght be worth a look. Other than losing all USB peripherals whenever I switched the KVM ( ), I was very happy with PC-BSD. Maybe next release...

I doubt it - more likely is that it was made to run on a base 4MB 4D/60 back in 1987 with only the minimum required updates since then. Kind of like the way gendist was/is still single-threaded. Ever tried to install SunOS 3.x or other older systems? None are "intuitive".

I won't argue that any installers from this era were intuitive. But I remember finding a very nice SunTools-based installer with GUI disk partitioning in a stray miniroot image on a Sun-2/150U that had been donated to my college - it was SunOS 3.x, can't be certain about the minor version. It was a damn sight easier to use that partitioning tool than the text-only stuff that was all I ever saw on SunOS 4, and I damn near fell out of my chair with outrage at all the hours I'd spent with that damned thing on workstation consoles when they had previously offered something clean and elegant.

Never did install SunOS 3.x from tape to bare drive. I should probably do that one of these days, just for kicks. (Potentially to the stomach... )

VAXstation 100s with cabinet kits?? Wow... Never saw one in person, but could see funky TTY entries for them on the VAXen at university. They were a Motorola 68000-based display terminal that used a UNIBUS card to interface with the host VAX. They pre-dated X Windows, and though they were used (among other devices) to develop it they weren't supported past X10.

Gonna be tough to check those out without a UNIBUS VAX. Heck, even with one I'd wonder about the software - looks like VMS support ended with 4.x. (cf. this posting ). Could link one to my VAX-11/730 and try for the title of Slowest X Terminal Ever. Or given some of the obscure and underpowered x86-based terminals that appeared and (thankfully) faded, invent a new index for Speed vs. Electricity Consumption...

Thanks, but the 11/730 is buried deep in storage, and in all honesty the odds of me doing anything productive with it are low. I can save one from being scrapped if it comes to that, but if there's anybody more inclined to fiddle with it please give them priority.

Unfortunately, I only got discs that get me to .9 so I either need to find someone locally to help image my original SCSI drive or get the overlays that I need.

I'm probably missing something, but a free Supportfolio account should still let you download the 6.5.22 overlays right to the O2, and I believe they should work fine with 6.5.9 - and don't forget to apply patch 5086 before the .22 overlay.

Code:
1.  Patch_SG0005086_Release_Note

This release note describes patch SG0005086 to IRIX
6.5/6.5SE and 6.5.1 to 6.5.20 inclusive.

This patch contains the IRIX 6.5.21 versions of the
installation tools inst, swmgr, showfiles and showprods.
Therefore, IRIX 6.5.21 itself will replace this patch.

If you are using the "live installation" method to upgrade
from any 6.5-based release prior to 6.5.21 to another from
6.5.21 onwards, you must first install this patch to enable
inst to handle certain additions to the format of the
distribution images.  If you have 6.5.21 installed on your
system, the required changes are already contained in inst.
Alternatively, a "miniroot install" will allow you to
install versions from 6.5.21 onwards without any patching.
You should be sure to use the miniroot contained in the
distribution to which you are upgrading.

And as for the updates, keep 'em coming. First, how else will you get help and support? Second, anybody who'd get annoyed isn't being forced to read them, so don't sweat it. If they choose to read them and complain, we'll drown them out. Third, the debugging process you document here might help somebody else out years down the road.

So in short: Chillax man, it's all good. :P

From 2010? Check your calendar, things were frozen far longer than that but that has been changing recently. They've released more changes - good or bad - to their key properties in the past six months than they have in too many years.

Changes to Y! Mail may be crap, but in terms of the perceived health of tech keiretsu it's nice to see Yahoo at least trying to be relevant for a change. And something's happening because Yahoo was the top US web property in July , even excluding Tumblr since I think that was listed separately.

So given all that, don't fret - they're likely to make more intolerable changes to Y! Mail soon. :D

Apparently the Altix 350 can be a little fussy about what RAM is installed, and I'm finding it difficult to identify known-working parts. A few searches of the forum going back to 2006 didn't add much. If you've got the part numbers for something you know works in these systems, please feel free to share it in this thread.

The same parts look like they should be compatible between the Altix 3000, 330, 350, and Prism systems...

I don't know. It probably wouldn't hurt anything to drop one in and try, but it all depends on what kind of X server-side software/support your distro includes, and what it makes of the card. If it's a well supported card and a generic kernel it might work, but I'm just guessing.

There's also a wiki page based on that thread - I just added some external links to it, as well as the relevant forum threads.

The Indigo and Indy pages mention battery replacement in varying detail. I guess I'll add that to the "round to it" list - maybe a central page that indexes all our model-specific threads and pages, as well as external classics like the Sun NVRAM FAQ at squirrel.com.

Note that these 2GB parts give a "CSUMERR" during an L1 "serial dimm" whereas the working DATARAM 1GB parts in the other bank just show "NO DATA". (The Samsung 512's that I have show a version number or something.)

If I have the Micron 2GB parts in the lowest bank I get the same condition shown here, but the EFI won't start with a complaint that there's no RAM available (regardless of what's in the next bank).

Continuing on, I get multi-bit failures when the Micron 2GB parts are being initialized/tested. Things like "ACT:0x000f0f0f0f, EXP:0x00ffffffff" make me think there's some sort of banking/interleave thing going amiss here.

Anyway giving up on these Micron parts, but there's some info that might prove useful to those testing additional parts in future.

We didn't have an {{inuse}} template - or any other similar template I could find - so I put one together very quickly.

Be sure to insert it as the first line of the page if you're going to be editing said page for an extended period.

If you put {{inuse| username }} it will substitute a text box that reads something like "This page being edited by username as of 20130903014316."

I think I'm surprised you were able to find something so useful on Supportfolio... Just kidding, and glad to hear it.

I certainly hope it works, and if so please let us know so we can write it up. Sounds like something that might apply to any of the systems featuring an L1 controller...

Over 130 edits by the top five most active users in the last 30 days, but they don't all result in mentions here in the forums. And yes, always gratifying to see things happening. Thanks for your recent edits, Torfinn. ;)

I always thought a 100 or 200LX would be nice to have. I did use a Poqet PC for several years before I got my Palm Pilot 5000. Various DOS apps, MicroEmacs, MS-Kermit, and a fair bit of time on the subway using VR (Vertical Reader) to read public domain texts from Project Gutenberg. All of which would've worked fine on the smaller/faster 200LX. I will say, the larger keyboard of the Poqet did come in handy in that when using it in the datacenter I was still able to type pretty quickly (so long as I could set it down on something).

Only reason I didn't use AFS back in the day was that I didn't have the time to setup a full Kerberized environment with KDCs, etc. That may have been a misunderstanding on my part, just because the only place I saw AFS in use was MIT's Project Athena... A current perspective on using AFS would be interesting.

Have pity on late-comers who're looking for an Onyx2 now or in the future and find this thread -- what year was this?

Ouch - I was looking for a 1000E about 10 years ago. Had a 1000 briefly, decided I wanted the bump in bus speed before I loaded it with SM81s. Too far and too heavy, unfortunately. But thanks for the pointer.

Awesome, thanks for the tip. But how can they call a 303 page document a "quick reference booklet?" How does "book let " even work, let alone "quick?!"

Note that it covers the Origin 200, Metarouter - the whole generation of gear.

I've used DG/UX on AViiON, but never saw it on Intel. Not sure if their bootloader bore any resemblance to AViiON PROM commands...

However Prior to the advent of SVR4-derived DG/UX, I know they remarketed Interactive UNIX for the 386. I wouldn't bet money on this, but depending on the age of what the OP is working with perhaps it's relabeled Interactive?
