SGI: Hardware

Hi all,

hopefully my new bought Origin300 system will arrive soon, but without hard drives, and possibly without the needed sleds...
What kind of sled are used in the O300? I have checked eBay, no such sleds are offered. I guess hey are different to the ones used in Octanes, am I right? What kind of systems share the O300 sleds (to make it easier for me to look for the sight ones *gg*)

Like they did with the O350, SGI used an off the shelf drive sled in the O300. The O350 sled was also used by Intel/Sun/others, the O300 sled in a few IBM servers.

The O300 sleds are marked with assembly number A06447-00x (where the "x" is either a 1 or a 2).

I run an O300 and appreciate this information. I'd say it's worth waiting for the system to show up before buying any, though - I have a feeling many O300s were run as nodes in multi-unit setups, never had hard drives put in them, and hit the recyclers with their factory drive sled/air baffle inserts untouched (like mine did).

So SGI used "real" drive sleds as baffles on the O3x series? Good to know- on O2k and other systems they came up with placeholders that wouldn't hold a drive so you'd be more likely to buy a drive from SGI rather than add an off-the-shelf model.

Pretty much, like ianj mentioned, they used a commodity sled with a removable air baffle.

The removable baffle is the tan part in the photo. Hard to make out in my camera phone photo, but "Remove only when installing hard drive device Keep for future use" is printed in the bottom of the baffle in this O300-style sled:

I for one am very glad they went this way in the O3x0 units... I suppose the same holds true for the Altix 350 and 450s, no?

The Altix 350 / Prism used the same sled as the Origin 350. Haven't ever seen an A450, but the illustrations in TechPubs make it look like they also use the same sled as the O350: http://techpubs.sgi.com/library/tpl/cgi ... #id5202614

Yep, 450/4700's use the same sleds as the Origin/Altix 350's. Very handy to only have to keep one sled around

The old 1450's also used the same sled as the 300's. I was able to grab most of my spares from scrapped 1450's.

Looks like the Origin/Altix 350/450 sleds are Intel drive tray/sled assembly A65278-005, and can be had for as little as $10 on eBay. They were used in the Intel SR1300/SR2300, SC5200, or SRSH4 chassis, continued through the SR[12]400 and possibly to the SR[12]600 chassis. They also appear to be used in several Sun x86 servers, notably the v60x and v65x.

According to the SR1300/SR2300 support documents at intel.com , the accessory part number for the drive carrier is FXX2DRVCARBLK, UPC code "7 35858 14621 0" and "MM #" 835853.

Still looking for the equivalences for the O300...

Thanks - here's a couple of photos of the part identification labels and the sleds side by side.

Update: For kicks, I ordered a 746797-001 off of ePay -- it fits the O300 just fine. Updated this wiki page to reflect this.

I also noticed an auction for "GATEWAY Hard Drive Blank Caddy 741202-001" that from the pictures looks to be an identical part. Added that to the wiki as speculative.

I realize this is an old thread, but I didn't seem to find this confirmed anywhere else. I purchased a few of the Gateway sleds you mention and they work fine in my O300. For future reference they're ASSY 746802-002 with 203368 WW03/01 printed underneath. Here are the individual part numbers for those trying to track them down on eBay--I've seen them listed under a few of these:

Baffle: 741202-001
Sled: 746797-001
Detachable Grill: 739241-002

The detachable grill slides into the little slot on the top of the sled and covers much of the top drive bay in the O300. Also worth pointing out that the little lever on the front is beige and not black like many of the other compatible sleds.
