Now why d'ya have to go and tempt me like that? I haven't yet put the 8x600MHz O300 to good use, and you've got me thinking about upgrading. No damn justice, mumble mumble grump grump...

I have a Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1, model SB0100, that I recently removed from an old PC of mine. It was working in the PC last I checked but that machine hasn't seen regular use in a long time, and I recently opted to use the motherboard AC97 audio while trying out a new AGP video card.
I installed the SB0100 in a Fuel with a basic 6.5.30f installation, and while the card showed up in 'hinv -v' output, it didn't appear to be recognized as a compatible audio card - no "Iris Audio Processor" line, but the PCI IDs were present. When I would try to run the audio control panel it would refuse to start claiming there was no recognized audio device. When running the Confidence test app, no audio test was offered.
By contrast, I finally installed my SB0090 Audigy and it was recognized on boot with no action on my part. 'hinv -v' reports both the "Iris Audio Processor: version EMU revision A3, number 1" and the PCI IDs, audio control panel runs and works (a little oddly, but works), and the audio confidence test 1) is now shown as an option, and 2) plays the sound clip successfully.
Too bad - when I noticed the EMU10K1 chip I was hoping it might turn out to be another option...
The only sizeable chip on the SB Live! 5.1 has the following markings:
( LOGO ) Environmental
( LOGO ) Audio
CREATIVE
EMU10K1-NGF
© CREATIVE TECH'97
0044K3075
Board shows a "COPYRIGHT CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY LTD 2000" on the component side, just above the PCI card edge fingers.

Good to know -- I can add that the Plantronics "DSP Adaptor -01" (spacing per their label) USB dongle works for output-only. Shows up in 'hinv -v' as follows:
Code: Select all
Iris Audio Processor: USB audio revision 1.0, number -1
Just a reminder that you need Irix 6.5.25 or later to get sound out of an Audigy, per the
Fuel hardware aggregator
.
I just installed IRIX 6.5.19 -> patch 5086 -> 6.5.22 on my Fuel. For the installation I removed both the SB0090 and an Adaptec AUA-3020, one of which was causing the miniroot kernel to hang with some kind of PCI bridge condition. But sure enough, when I added back the SB0090 post-installation it was not recognized...
FYI, YMMV, IANAL, SNAFU, PEBCAK...

Unfortunately when setting up the Fuel I removed the 22320 before I thought to check this thread. I've got 6.5.22 running (upgraded from 6.5.19) so I could validate the GCC installation procedure - on an IBM/ Seagate ST373453LC 73GB 15,000 RPM SCA drive with an SCA <-> HD68 adapter, to one of your earlier points. I reinstalled the 22320 but it wasn't even partially recognized under this installation of 6.5.22.
If I get a chance I'll toss the 6.5.30 system disk in one more time just to see what the story is.

He's been the toast of the town since HBO announced they'd do a mini-series based on Game of Thrones. Which I guess did well, because the media is still gushing about him... He's supposed to write nice dense, multi-line stories that take a long time to resolve, which I'm all for provided it doesn't feel like it's being stretched out to generate one more $9 paperback. (No indication he does, but I can think of a few...)

Or you get what I got, expanded.
I bought Windows 7 Ultimate OEM on eBay - sorry, if I can find somebody selling it for less that US$275 then yes, I'm going for it. Well what they shipped was a legit package complete with Ingram Micro stock stickers -- but for RoW ("Rest of World"), not North America. MSFT has had differential regionalized pricing for a while now, and it appears with all the phone-home functions they're enforcing it based on IP geomapping.
So my Dell Precision 690 now boots up and complains that it isn't "Genuine Windows," and has a little text tag to that effect in the bottom right corner of all active dispays...
Thanks for going to the extra effort, that must've taken a lot of work given how the system was arranged in the room!
Interesting - it looks like the FireGL cards are almost exposed to the outside airflow at the top edge of the cards - it certainly looks like the surrounding sheetmetal was modified a lot...

Might be worth fixing, not something I'm up to doing myself. In general though, you might want to check out
this thread on Fuel PSUs
for general info and possible alternatives.

I'm not knocking George, and from everything I've heard I'm sure I'll enjoy his books when I do finally pick them up. But in the meantime, I understand there are new releases from Alaistair Reynolds and Neal Stephenson out there somewhere...
I don't know if that's repairable - I doubt it - but I've personally bought good used LCDs for 15" Apple Powerbooks on eBay and replaced them myself following instructions from pbfixit.com - and I understand they cover more than just Apple products now. So depending on your patience, free time, and the availability of a replacement part I think you should be able to do the same if you want.
Hope that helped,

I assume by "Unix" keyboard, you mean one that the control and caps lock keys swapped, right?
No, the "Unix" layout typically refers to placement of the Control key in it's correct and natural position, somewhere to the left of the A key, where God and Nature intended it to be.
It was only around the introduction of the PC/AT that the ergonomic nightmare of moving it to the bottom row of the keyboard was introduced. Suddenly the incidence of debilitating carpal tunnel problems shot skyward, and people started to believe taking thrice as long "mousing" was preferable to using keyboard accelerators or shortcuts. It's amazing how things that a few seconds using character mode Word Perfect started taking minutes when people found it physically painful to use their damned keyboards...
Anyway my apologies for not clearing this up back in July. I must have been suffering from a critical insufficiency of strong drink at the time.
Well "flash status" is part of the recommended procedure in the Wiki page
hinv forum guidelines
, so hopefully it will figure in more posts going forward. It might help if a link to that page were in the banner for the hinv forum, instead of the note about hinv and gfxinfo output...

BTW - don't you also have an V12-DCD-DM2-DM5-FC equipped Octane2 to immortalize in an hinv post? Preferably with a few photos so we can see just how pathological the Avery label fixation has become.
Yeah, and I'd love to remove the FC board and re-arrange things to avoid fast-fan.
I have to complete a culling of the Octanes, and figure out what I'm keeping - probably just one built around the V12, another around the MXE+PVO. The sticking point is testing the components I've collected and building up the other three chassis so they can find new homes.
In theory that will be a trigger for an update of the remaining Octane' hinv posts.
That

is a good one, but the easiest thing is to open the "full editor" and then click on the "view more smilies" link on the left side of the page. Click on one of the icons and the special text code to insert it in your sig will appear in the editing window.
Retrofitting can be a drag. The previous owner of my Audi A4 wagon replaced the headlights with the following generation's projector housings. But unfortunately in doing so the whole housing is a little... off. The low beams are aimed much too low, and I can't get at the adjusting mechanisms, so I'm going to have to disassemble the front bumper, et cetera. I also have no fog lights until I collect those updated parts from a later car and find a way to mount them.
I hate front plates. If no means was provided to mount them by the manufacturer, why the hell am I stuck trying to kludge something up? Zip ties are not the answer (tested empirically), and I'm not looking forward to that ticket now that the plate is missing...

Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that I can go out and mod my vehicles as I see fit (within my abilities and (sometimes) the law). But I would rather do it right than do it over again - since I've been down that road a number of times already. I now know that odds are if I'm reassembling something, I'm likely to be the next guy having to go in there. So if some anti-seize is appropriate, put it on; if you've run some wires, work it into the stock loom or secure it safely out of the way somehow. Yadda yadda.
None of which helps the OP. If the real Euro parts are too expensive, I'd consider trying to get some used US-spec headlight housings to experiment with, and then start a long research project at HIDPlanet.com or where ever. Something that's been sitting on my own to-do list for a long time.

If you have a machine that can run VMware Player, I'd recommend using DINA for installing overlays, clean IRIX installs, or nekoware over the network. Guide here:
Using DINA for network installation of IRIX
Installing some overlays from CD probably isn't so bad. Installing all of IRIX from CD is a pain - so many disc swaps... But in this case, you could avoid having to put the .22 overlays on CD at all.

General note:
tingo

success using DINA under VirtualBox

Anyway, I changed a couple sentences in the wiki guide to reflect the news.

My thoughts exactly. I've never found the digital clockfaces very interesting. The nixie tube clockface sounds like the perfect mashup in the abstract, but in practice the layout feels just a little off to me... You can see all 16 new iPod Nano clockfaces
I'm wondering more what the testing guidelines are going to be. Does each tester have to fire up every other app in Nekoware to make sure there's no interference?

Update: For kicks, I ordered a 746797-001 off of ePay -- it fits the O300 just fine. Updated
this wiki page
to reflect this.
I also noticed an auction for "GATEWAY Hard Drive Blank Caddy 741202-001" that from the pictures looks to be an identical part. Added that to the wiki as speculative.
Also, if you haven't found it yet you might want to check out this thread Wanted: O300 hard drive rails .
