So, I want a way to allow my little O2 to easily access file shares from my Windows 7 machine. In years gone by, I had an academic license for Sharity 2 and this worked well on my old Indy and on my O2. However since then, my license for Sharity has long since gone AWOL.

What I've tried so far:

Uninstalling Sharity 2.0 and trying Sharity 3.0 in free mode (I can live with one mounted share). The problem is that after installing it and then searching for my PC, the Sharity daemon locks up solid. Like, absolutely solid. After waiting for 10 minutes, I tried to shut the O2 down and it hung during shut down and required a holding press of the power button to switch it off.

I've also tried installing an NFS Server program on my Windows machine, such as the haneWIN NFS server. After setting up a share with it and disabling the Windows firewall, the O2 bluntly refuses to see any mapped shares at all on my PC.

So, once again I'm unfortunately forced to ask the question "am I missing something ridiculously obvious"?

You could of course go all out and buy a small NAS and stick it on your network ( https://www.google.com.au/search?q=read ... 1&ie=UTF-8 ), or build a freenas ( http://www.freenas.org ) as been discussed on these forums ( search.php?keywords=freenas&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search )
I try to make the shares and mount points similar names.

Be sure to come up with a good back up strategy. My NAS died on Friday night and I had to pull the drives out and put them into another ReadyNAS I luckily had, now I am copying all the files off ( ~2Tb, to much for optical media or tapes ) onto an external drive ( https://www.google.com.au/search?q=west ... 1&ie=UTF-8 ) in case the old and previously repaired spare NAS dies as well. I am thinking of using two white box PC and remote replication features of ZFS/FreeNAS... ( http://www.freenas.org/about/features.html#replication )... Source code gets backed up separately a second time on TimeMachine (Apple) which has saved my bacon more than once.

I can also recommend against using this. It sucks. You can share files, after a fashion, but performance is ghastly, and that's with both Irix and Solaris 10. Anything else would be better.

I also tried Sharity, it was pretty bad.

Robespierre recommends AFS, I intend to try that soon. Report back if you find something that works well, please ?

Ehrmmmm, have you tried Samba? It mimics a full-blown Windows file-server. It's a 'free download' and though it can be a little fiddly to setup, it works really well.

Jimmer, unfortunately if you want to share from the Winnders and Orphans box, Samba only works the wrong way :(

Sharity might be better now but when I tried it I got the same results as Trippynet. Once burned twice shy ...

I was going to try that once ... had some bad core, thought I'd take a look to see if there was anything obvious. Took the cover off, put it right back on :)

Meanwhile, M. le Robespierre's previrous suggestion to try AFS looks not so bad. There are ready-to-wear versions for Windows, Irix, and Solaris. Irix <-> Solaris is no problem but anything to Windows is a real bitch.

Only reason I didn't use AFS back in the day was that I didn't have the time to setup a full Kerberized environment with KDCs, etc. That may have been a misunderstanding on my part, just because the only place I saw AFS in use was MIT's Project Athena... A current perspective on using AFS would be interesting.
