Nothing special is needed to get an internet or network connection through the twisted pair port. Just make sure you aren't plugging into the ISDN port instead. ;)

Whenever I do a fresh irix install I run through these instructions which also cover setting up the network interface.

Wasn't the majority of the x86 demoscene heavily reliant on a assembly and hardware constraint? It was the era when clones were still everywhere.

Who remembers this old thread? Guess who took eight years to build the damn machine?
Oh my god I looked like such a dork when I was 17.

Anyways, it's up. Sometime in the past I bought a second VFX1 to make up for the missing VIP card and got another 25 feet of cable, a complete spare helmet and the docs and software (actually, it turned out my bonus CD is a bad master so the files are unreadable. Anyone got a backup? :( ). At some other point I basically imaged everything on the fortevfx1 Yahoo group, then for a few more years the system and two boxes of parts bumbled around in storage. Anyways, the board is recapped, the software is loaded and now the fun finally begins.

Sorry folks. No truly fast 3D acceleration here. Every high-end AGP card I owned with a feature connector (including my previously mentioned Geforce 2 and no 87porche, apparently the Voodoo5 5500 won't work either) turned out to not be compatible in one way or another. Instead I'm forced to use a nasty Rage Pro Turbo chipset. On paper it's been said that Half-Life works but in testing so far it does not.

The textures are all 256 color but the engine I believe wants to run at another depth that isn't supported. There's gotta be a way to fix this. Quake on the other hand plays like a dream.
Actually in the last eight years it seems a lot of talk on the VFX1 died off int he advent of the Oculus Rift. It's all an uphill fight from here on in.
Also it appears the foam padding in the helmet is of the variety that does not age well. In both helmets the foam has begun to decay and crumble. It's all held in with velcro so they can be removed, templated and new pieces cut and installed.

Say SiliconClassics, didn't you make a video on the VFX1 a while ago?

So a preview for a movie trailer (this is already raising flags for me) came out . It's about 10 seconds long. Most of the scenes were okay, then there's THIS.

Yeah, sure, MovieOS is the future and everything has to feel high-tech and stuff but COME ON. At least show a little realism. Even the old one looks a bit more realistic than monkeys using touchscreens in a blue themed.....eugh.

Anyways, that's my rant for the year. Back to you hamei. ;)

I feel obliged to post a video. ;)

It's fine under the helmet as there's still plenty of ventilation but the optics being adjusted are key. I've looked at the Rift but right now at least my modern computer is simply not up to the task of handling one and they're still being indecisive as hell for a product that people keep treating like a commercial product when it's still a prototype. Started off as 720p optics, then they went to 1080p optics, now they are suggesting 4K optics (I really pity the people with the devkits who have to constantly change their work). The tracking has changed at least twice and after all that you're still constrained to your desk to use the mouse unless you spend even more on something that is similar to the cyberpuck or a dataglove or those treadmills. I have a P5 glove kicking around somewhere but support for it was dropped in Windows 7.

I'm collaborating with Techfury to try something but I'm having configuration issues on my end getting my 5394-01B twinax controller to play nice with my 7855-10 modem.

The controller is configured as follows:

Code: Select all

AA: 0  BB: 0
1: 00  2: 10  3: 1110000   8: 3C 0   P: - -

The modem is set to factory defaults which is what we want. The cable being used is a passive 25 pin. I know it's passive because I've used it as a SCSI extension cord once and use it regularly with an EPROM programmer.

The issue is that as soon as the 5394 finishes booting it tells the modem to originate a call. It should be waiting for a call, or waiting for it to be specifically told to dial from user input (shift-sysRQ <number> <enter>). You can unplug the modem and it behaves again but it's positively something the controller is trying to do. We tried overriding it by jumpering pins 17 and 19 didn't work either.

For you curious onlookers in the UK, I found an Airfreight service on Vancouver which gave me a good $380 shipping quote to Sheffield. I will ship to the UK and probably further into Europe when the estimates are that good.

I'm trying to use my O2 as a PAL video monitor so I can play with a Sinclair ZX Spectrum someone gave me. The basic video panel and monitor are having a tough time working with the composite signal I've modded out of the speccy. It can take upwards of a minute for the machine to lock onto the signal then after probably displaying a single stable frame of video it locks up. Both computers are still functioning but I have to close and reopen the video panel to get the same sync issue and single frame before it locks up again. I switched back to NTSC mode and tried another composite source and it was fine. Dragged out my quadra 660av and tried on that and the Sinclair was fine as well. Is this a settings issue or one of the many quirks of a Sinclair product that the O2's A/V module does not like?

ian_finder gave me this VHS tape to digitize. It appears to be a training tape reviewing the installation of the then new IP19 boardset, upgrading the IO4 PROM and then installing Irix 6.0. There's also a quiz at the end where you can get certified for the upgrade and receive a FREE SOUVENIR! 8-)

The video was uploaded as an uncompressed but deinterlaced AVI (my ISP must of loved that because it's nearly seven gigs). The quality from the tape itself was already pretty poor.

The video feed I get from my Canopus box is raw video and it's always been like that for every project I've used it on. 6.8gb IS the file as lossless as I could get it. Outside of the quirks of deinterlacing I see no degrading of the quality compared to the original tape.

It's just a really poor quality recording.

I don't immediately have the ability to pull the EDID off my own monitor as the doctor has me on "DON'T LIFT HEAVY STUFF FOR A MONTH!" and I'm pretty sure picking mine up will blow my stitches out, so I"m going to hope that someone already has already dumped it seeing how it's a really popular monitor with the CRT fanatics.

I got /usr/gfx/ucode/RE, but no KONA. :(

I dug a bit deeper and found the VOF's and a potentially handy readme but as for the more exact specifics for the RE2 you're requesting I can't find them yet. Should I be seeing something for the GE10 or RE2 in /usr/gfx/ucode/vfc/rules ? I can only find just the usual marketing specs which aren't useful here.

I'll just navigate around for you so you get an idea what's available.

I saw a few boxed units in Japan. All a touch out of my budget last I was there but yeah, not a lot of selection unless you find the SCSI adapter and just use it as a CD drive.

If you stick to ebay for everything you'll be bankrupt before you know it. I've been going everywhere but ebay for the last 15 years.

I'm wondering if anyone is still around who could better tell me exactly how early one of my 4D/20's are.

Inside it is date stamped May 9 1989 and is serial E0300003. The oldest mention of a release date is October 1988 . I'm optimistic that they had built 300000 machines by then and I'm optimistic this is machine number 3 so what is up with the serial number?

I'm simply too far away and simply too broke at the moment to help you with anything and I'm sure you've already been swarmed with offers and requests for most of it.

As someone who has in the past tried to print CD labels made from discs with a reflective surface, they look terrible.

I'll take the words out of hamei's mouth, condense them a little, then point out that Richard Stallman is an insane scraggly-haired motherf***er.

It's been a while, but how hard was it to bluff swmgr into making it think it's upgrading something that didn't exist?
