The collected works of pentium - Page 8

For starters, sounds like you cooked your PixLink.
Secondary, do you have your system set to run a madly high resolution?

Was helping a friend clean out his garage and noticed this sitting outside next to his deck.

It's in madly sad shape (rusted shielding and weathered plastics) since it's been sitting outside for a few years but it is indeed an ANS 700/150. It even has the keys! :D
The inside looks a lot cleaner so ther is still a chance it can be recovered. Erik and Shiner are the last sources of info on these beasts on the net however the necassary AIX 4.1.x software and installation media is the hard part. Linux is not an alternative (The linux kernels are just as ancient and useless now) so what do I do?

I recently had to help someone else clean up their collection.
It turns out the Compaq has a bad screen. No worries, there is yet another portable 386 that had been uncovered at the place I work. It would be nice if I could swap out the displays and then possibly sell whatever remains for parts.

Oh, that would be fantastic if I somehow got hold of that! :D

It's still over at the house but I'll try to haul it back to CelGen HQ sometime this week for a badly needed trardown and cleaning.

Dude, It's no dream machine with dual TU-56's, RK-05's, and core galore but it IS at the least a PDP-11. I know I could probably deliver one to a loving home and the "meh" unit of the bunch could possibly be traded for a nice Lisa.

Actually, should I be saying all that out loud?

Welcome to the elite club of people who somehow broke those transistors off the system controller. from what I recall, they were plain vanilla transistors. I had more trouble finding a guy who would sell such small transistors than installing them.

Word has passed through Wikipedia that it might be possible to install Windows NT for PowerPC on an ANS *IF* it has a particular ROM SIMM installed. How on earth would I go around to confirm this? sure, it would be so slow that it might probably not be worth it but it's a screenshot worth waiting for I think.

First off, I would like to be very thankful to a man who I will only name "M" for making this moment possible.

Anyways, many hours and several phone calls later I am now in possession of one...

That's right, I now own all three systems and I'm very thankful that M was nice enough to do this.
Anyways, I powered one up immediately, I have yet to do another one and the nasty one I spent the afternoon stripping down and cleaning the entire system. It's a lot nicer now but to be on the safe side I won't try powering it on until the box dries out.
That floppy disk was also the RAID card configuration disk. I'm greatful that was not lost.

That was not all. Remember how when the Macintosh was released, they had the signatures of the team stamped inside of the case? Well when I took the front off, it appears the same applies here for the ANS team.

I uncovered a few things while poking around work. Some of it was some DecStations and MicroVAXen. The only box I can really rememebr though is a MicroVAX 2000.
I'm sure if I went in sometime I could build at least one or two decent boxes.
The rest of it might be in close proximity but what kind of use can I get from one? Apparently you could toggle them between a graphical singleuser workstation and a headless mutiuser one.

I decided to try reviving a small army of iPods stretching from the original 5gb iPod to the 30gb Photo. They all seem to have behaved well so far save for three.
Both of my first gens (5gb and 10gb) will charge over firewire but when connected to my laptops firewire port, they are not seen by the computer. The same goes for one of my third gens. One will dock and I can mess with it (It also says "format: Windows" in the About screen) but the other is not detected (it does not specify the format in the About screen).
I do have a second gen however and it is seen and works with my laptop no problem.
My suspicion is that the firmware on these three are just so old that it predates when Apple made the iPod available for the PC and because of such, the iPod itself is deliberately preventing me from seeing it and using it. My only idea on how to fix this is to plug them all into a mac and use iTunes running on it to restore and update the firmware to something newer and that is compatible with the PC. Is this correct?

oops. I meant the PC...
Ah, so my first gens are essentially useless until I plug them into my G5.
I tried the 3G on both USB and firewire. Both give the same result.

I would assume that a Windows formatted iPod will work on a MAc no problem as a mac supports both HFS+ and FAT and Windows does ont support HFS+.
I'll try plugging the 3G into a mac the next chance I get. If it fails to work there, I guess I can toss it as I got duplicates.

There,s a VAXstation 2000 with keyboard and mouse, MicroVAX 2000 with some of 3-port MMJ adapter fitted to it, a VAXstation 3100, MicroVAX3100, and lastly a DECstation 5000/25 with just the keyboard and video cable.

I grabbed both the 2000's along with an ST-251 for the station and some monster 120mb Maxtor MFM drive for the micro and also dragged back the VAXstation 3100.
I left the 5000 behind because it really didn't look all that special aside from probably being faster and newer.
From what I can tell they look good. the 3100 has an 8-bitplane framebuffer and 16mb memory and the 2000 station has 4mb memory and a 4-bitplane framebuffer.

The one thing I don't understand on these things is the video output. Supposedly the keyboard, mouse and video share the same connector but all I got was a little box that breaks out into the keyboard and mouse but no video. :/

With less than a month to go, I'm already getting notes on my office desk from people asking to bring stuff back ranging from a Sega Wondermega Mk.I to keychains...
My camera is also about to kick the bucket. Low light pictures are starting to show off too many dead pixels and I don't have the money to replace it or risk buying a camera from London Drugs and returning it before the two week return policy expires. Looks like I have to drag out the crap consumer grade Kodak.

Unfortunately that is not really possible. At least for part of the trip.

!WARNING! NERDY ANIME STUFF AHEAD

Over the last few months me and the others who I am going with have negotiated and set aside a big chunk of time to roam about Tokyo and go to various locations that were seen in the TV series Digimon (if my avatar, hostnames and other fodder has not told you I'm a huge fan, this proves it ;) ). The final cut should be available on Youtube and as a single HD torrent sometime in the fall or winter of this year. I put a lot of work into this project too. I wrote scripts, mapped locations, and bought new equipment just for this short window of time I will get to film all the raw footage I can before I take it home and start working on it.

OKAY, RESUME YOUR NORMAL LIFE

I agree though that dragging a camera everywhere really ruins the moment sometimes. At the expense of quality I guess I can just take along my little Kodak and use that. It at the least can fit in my pocket. The Olympus won't.

Looking at pictures it looks like the 2000 requires the DA-15F to keyboard, mouse and monitor breakout cable. Interesting idea- looks like that bit came about so that DEC could ship a box that brought the keyboard and mouse lines out as MMJ DECConnect lines on the MV2000.

I don't have a cable that will break those out for you, Pentium.

I have that three port MMJ box on the MicroVax as I knew it was something important.
Also, I found a pinout for the keyboard/mouse/video connector so I'll look into seeing how easy it is to make a video connector. I'm assuming it would output something along the lines of RGB, Sync on green, correct?

Code:
1 - vid_red     2 - color_ret   3 - mono_ret
4 - +5VDC       5 - mouse_rcv   6 - kbd_grnd
7 - ground      8 - +12VDC      9 - vid_mono
10 - vid_green  11 - vid_blue   12 - -12VDC
13 - mouse_xmit 14 - kbd_rcv    15 - kbd_xmit

Spent the day roaming around Akihabara today.
The place sure feels like it's changed from the electric town it is was. Ther eis a fair amount of anime merchandise all over the place. Never knew One Piece was still so popular.
I finally did come across a scattered few shops which specialized in random electronics and bought a brand new Cisco Aironet 340 for 800 yen and then went to the Super Potato and bought some game stuff and a WonderSwan with games for 1700 yen.
The rest of the day was spent being dragged through the various anime shops that dot the area.
I'm suprised at the other fantastic prices. 3500 yen for a Famicom.....65800 yen for a Vectrex.
Oh, my luck also gave out and we are getting the broad side of a typhoon that's off to the....
Crap. I don't know if you deem it the east or west.
Anyways, it was raining on and off today and thank god, the humidity was a lot weaker.
Also, I see a lot of places do not allow for photography. :?

No. I live in BC. I'm just saying it's as humid as an Ontario summer.

Another day, more fun.
Me and the rest of the group slept in, then went for ramen at lunch.
After that we visited the residence of the people who were greatful to rent the apartments while we are here and spent the afternoon there. After that we all went to the soba and then went bowling. Following two action packed games of ten pin (canada only has five pin) we split with the parents and went to the arcade.
It was win.
It was also expensive.
We spent a good 2000 yen in the Gundam PODs (air conditioned, audio interconnect and a domed panoramic display system I could only wish was driven by an SGI) and another 1000 in the other various machines.
Now we are hunkering down and enjoying sake with friends. Tomorrow we flip a coin to see if we go to Yokohoma or Shibuya/Harajuku.

woo, this sake is good.

Great to hear of another one coming back to life.
The IP6 will support a full compliment of parity 4mb SIMMS which double the memory spec to 64mb and the system does not complain about it If you can get the memory, I dare you to five it a shot.

As an earlier thread states, I spent time in Japan earlier and the group liked it so much, we'll be doing it again in Summer 2012.
One thing we found was that sharing one cell phone between the group was hard. The budget phone we borrowed while we were too was also not too friendly on the language side.
I have a DoCoMo N504i that I found at a shop here. It's an 800mhz phone from 2002, has the basic functions and you could switch the language to english. The battery also seems to still behave as well.
Thing is, we don't know how the phone registration system works there. Are we able to go to a dealer, get it activated, then slap a temporary phone number on it for two weeks for a small amount of money or are phones permanently bound to the registree (kind of like some license plates are registered to one VIN) and can only be used under only one contract?
