The collected works of pentium - Page 7

I thought that since my PC110 was networking I would try to view the Origin 2000 owners manual. While I was (slowly) doing so, I scrolled over a graphic image of a deskside and when I stopped and waited for the image to load it didn't load in one chunk but in pieces.
I saw boards, connectors, doors, and a whole bunch of stuff that on a regular (and fast) computer you would not see.
Is there an ability to "explode" some images that are in PDF files that I don't know of or did SGI have WAY too much time on their hands?

I got no idea how I broke this.
I'm getting icons which now only show the default "file" icon instead of their more specific icon. Sometimes it fixes itself, other times it does not.
The problem is not limited to just Windows programs or files. It's affecting other things like some of my Steam games or media files.

Is this fixable?

When I was bumming hardware off SAQ I was introduced to and received a full-length NuBus card that was marked "Pro Tools Audio Card"

I have the software for Pro Tools Audio hardware (or for something that involves Pro Tools) so it's possibly useful for me however I appear to be missing a cable or break out box or something according to the scsi-like connector on the back and I assume the two black connectors on the other end of the board are for a memory upgrade or something.

Can I get a bit more information on this before I go stuffing it into my Quadra 700?

Well I wish myself any luck finding that breakout box. No suprise that the hardware still fetches interesting prices.
Yeah, that's why I would of put it in the Quadra 700 and not the 950. The 950 gets the PowerPC upgrade. ;)

It's super simple and cheap to build a rotary three-phase converter. You do get one high leg but most motors don't seem to care. Not sure how an Origin would feel about that, tho.

Hmm. That would be interesting to look into.
I'm sure a few of us might like their iron running off converted three phase.

Kamloops sucks and in ten days I won't even be living in the city anymore. I got a new place to live and a job in Vancouver.
The best you can get out of the city is possibly taking the 2141 steam locomotive to Clinton and back when they are running and outdoor sports like mountain biking at Sun Peaks but other than tours of the local industry there really isn't much else to do here unless you like tubing on the river.
Also yes, the Computer History Museum relocated into Silicon Valley near where WeirdStuff and the Digibarn (BTW, Bruce Damer is from Kamloops) are and unless I'm wrong, they are currently setup in part of the old SGI campus.

Unfortunately my apartment currently does not permit enough space for an SGI so I'm using Jax's Octane for now.

Where the hell did you get that information? That's totally wrong. We have Marmets here. Lots and lots of them. Damn things are a pest.

Wait, why is stuff suddenly happening in my area? Is there some sort of field that makes everything boring should it enter said field around me? :P

I'm in the proccess of maxing out my Quadra 950 so I have given it the PowerPC upgrade, 64mb parity ram, the Radius PhotoEngine, and the Radius VideoVision.
Unfortunately I'm missing the break-out box for the VideoVision. Would anyone have a spare handy?

EDIT : Oh, and to bring this back to Kamloops -- hey pentium, you do realize you could probably fund your SGI habit by providing a regular supply of cute marmot photos and videos to places like Cute Overload, yes?

I can get a few roadkill shots. In the summer they like to try and sunbathe on the center miridian on the trans-canada. Sometimes they don't make it.

Okay, I'll bum him about shipping and see where that goes.

Edit: I'm assuming you already know that the NuBus and PCI versions of the VideoVision for some off reason use different BOB cable pinouts, right?

No idea. Nobody ever bothered to document which model BOB worked with which card so I'll find out anyhow since I got both the NuBus and PCI versions of the board without their BOB's.

The documentation set sounds interesting. I'll keep it in mond and consider it after I finish moving so I don't get stuff ending up at the wrong house.

Speaking of the Targa, I managed to get all the original cables for it. They are really nice I must say.

So Pentium, what will you do in Vancouver?

I work at a shop where I process and test incoming laptops for useability/sellability and then take what is worth selling upstairs to my own office where I then photograph and sell said laptops on ebay and receive a commission on each laptop sold which sits on top of an hourly wage I would be making at the same time. Initially it's a two day a week, part time job but hopefully I can increase the hours so I won't have to try and possibly juggle two jobs should the commission pay be lower than what I am expecting.

As a plus though, I'm ten minutes from home by car and I don't even have to get snarled in traffic to get there. I simply turn onto the main drag and it takes me directly there.

Sure beats putting out bottles of pop and bailing cardboard for a living. :P

Have fun on the island. You heading to Twassen or the Horseshoe Bay terminal? I was in Victoria several times but never went any further north more than once and that was almost seven years ago now. I know that just downtown there is a good Value Village (leave it to me to know the locations of allt he good second hand stores). I got my Handspring there as well as a few other things.

I got a PowerPC upgrade-equipped Quadra 950 that handles classic environment software under 7.6 and then I got a dual 2.5 G5 that I use for OSX. I have yet to get a need for setting up an Intel system but I'm sure that is a matter of time.....

For on the go, I got a DUObook 2300c for classic (again, 7.6) and a Lombard Powerbook for OSX.

I'm trying to make a classic video capture/edit box out of my PowerPC Quadra 950 and I want to see if I can get a bit more of a performance boost by installing three identical (9gb 10Krpm SCA) drives and somehow RAIDing or striping them together. I'm not sure how to exactly do this under 7.6, nor do I know of any software that does this, or if my editor, Avid VideoShop, has the option built-in.
Is this even possible or am I stuck with just throwing in one large drive and using that (which seems really, really dumb)?

I don't think I can spare my last free NuBus slot (because I filled all the other slots with equally awsome and wonderful cards) for a SCSI card that *might* support RAID. I guess I'll just throw in an 18gb SCA drive (or 36gb if I'm really nuts) and call it fair.

Wait a second. I'm getting mixed reports that HFS has a partition size limitation somewhere between 2gb and 2tb my sources being jax184
Quote:
HFS can only go up to 2 gig
and some random website
Quote:
On systems with 68040 or PowerPC processors partitions can be used of up to 2 TByte, systems with 68030 processor remain limited to 4 GB. Check of the disk after a system crash requires now much less time.
. Wikipedia is no help at all, neither is google. Most people discuss the block sizing. If it is 2gb for a non-booting volume, that really makes it not worth it to make nine individual partitions.

I'll be at my apartment starting Wednesday afternoon.
If you want to see what $533/month buys you in East Vancouver I can show you the pad (and the sea of boxes I'm swimming in) and take you over to the local pizza joint down the street. Beyond that there's not much else I can really show you. I'm still exploring the neighborhood still.

Pentium, you need to start saving up for a girlfriend. Besides that, one brand of computer is enough.

Girlfriend? Pfft.
They invented hookers for a reason and trust me, they are a lot cheaper than girlfriends too! ;)

Clicking from a hard disk of any make or model is usually an indication that the drive has failed. Just because Seagate is (was) of a respectable brand does not mean that your drive would last much longer.

The majority of it is nothing special or of value (well, save for the 20 NeXT MO disks which amounted for $100 of the total) except that Compaq Portable III.
To most, it's a nicely specced (i387, maxed ram, hard disk, ISA expansion and great cosmetic shape) luggable however for those who know what thet red sheet of paper says, it drops the bomb.

http://starringthecomputer.com/computer.php?c=183

THAT IS IT!
That Compaq is the one I now own. It cost me a whole $20.
It feels kinda weird that I own something that was once used as a prop in a Sci-Fi TV show.
Yeah, I'm not even one week into living in my own in Vancouver and I already got a story to tell my friends. :D

Also, Nekonoko, to tease you, my friend managed ot snag himself a ZIP Chip 8000 for less than $10. Nope. He didn't get the box for it though. ;)

It's called collecting if you can show it off.
It' called hoarding if you get stuff and it all ends up in boxes or packed away for all its life (space limitations due to moving are an exclusion if it is for less than 24 months).
I agree though, Quality IS a lot better than quantity.
