Leopard is fine, but I think nowadays the best reason to own a Power Mac is all that lovely Classic-era software that won't run properly or at all on an Intel Mac, even with Sheepshaver (which is a neat hack but doesn't really work all that well, especially if you've ever tried to run things like QuarkXPress or FrameMaker in it). That means Tiger. Heck, early OS X software that wasn't universal, for that matter. There's some gems in there too.

I got it when I had grand ideas of a music workstation but the "music workstation" became a combination of a Yamaha CX5M (with the upgraded MIDI-capable sound module) and a strawberry iMac G3 running ProTools and a USB MIDI interface.

I actually wanted OSX server & has a copy but it's a grey CD dedicated to a certain machine & in this case it's my Mac Mini server

If that was the disc that came with your Mac mini server, then unfortunately you might have an Intel OS X disc there. No grey OS X Server CD ever shipped with a PowerPC Mac mini; that concept didn't emerge until the Intel days.

So, a postscript. I got a 712/60 and gutted it. Turns out that the Galaxy board is reworked slightly to add an auxiliary connector to what looks like some of the PS/2 pins on the back, presumably for the internal keyboard and trackball, so I clipped the connector off the 712/60, soldered on leads to the same points and soldered them to the connector, then carefully wormed it into the guts of the laptop. It does now give a display on an external monitor, but it won't see any keyboard, even an external one. I'm not sure if there's a difference between the boards that meant I should have connected the leads elsewhere, and there is some difference in labeling on the two boards even though the solder points seem to be the same in that area, but the internal display doesn't work either, so I'm concluding the beating this thing took probably broke something else.

Anyway, in case anyone else runs across one of these and tries to fix it.

Mostly because my programs were already using IST and I don't have a reason to switch. I haven't had any of the repaint problems you mention on El Crap (you can try them and see for yourself, though this is a 2014 i7 MBA, so it might be system dependent). However, it doesn't use antialiased fonts, etc.

Wow, tried your Mosaic and was warped in the 90's. Nice packaging, icon and all. It looks so SGI.
On surface yours look to work OK, as interface is relatively basic.
But I have the possibility to try it on Imac retina 27" 2015 with 10.11.1, and Imac 27" 2010 with 10.6.8. The mosaic Motif interface is considerably faster on he old mac. So much so, that if I open it with your default page, and quickly resize the window (using the handle on the bottom right), it can't keep up with the resizes, if I do it quickly. It will keep redrawing itself for a couple of seconds, once I let go. On the old mac it works just fine. And the processor on the old mac is roughly three times slower. The resolution is the same on both computers, in spite of the new retina, since Xquartz does not support retina and displays 2x2 pixels. Not to mention that ATI chip is several generations better.
So there is something sticky in Xquartz / OS X El Capitan which not only eats all the CPU progress in the last 5 years, but makes it also considerably slower.

Interesting. I'm on my 10.4 iBook, but I'll try that when I get back and compare it against my 10.6.8 system. The 10.4 iBook doesn't render Mosaic-CK quickly, but it's only a 1.33GHz PowerPC G4.

On the side note - I see you are also modernizing Mosaic with new features, like trying to introduce UTF-8.
You might try XmHTML as shortcut, and get antialiased fonts without much effort.

Of course, it might be almost too modern for Mosaic, defeating its own purpose. So maybe XmHTML could be used as an alternative page renderer.
In my software, XmHTML works on Linux and Mac, both 64 and 32 bits.

That's pretty much Sonnet in a nutshell. The one card of theirs I had that went bad, they no longer sold, but were able to locate a replacement for me out of new old stock at their expense. And that was after the warranty ended, by the way.

I like the quietness of my C8000 too, but I have the same problem, and it uses almost as much juice as the quad G5 next to it.

So I'll just necro this. I've been slowly refurbishing the Ultra-3 laptop. It has Solaris 10 on it. It also has the SUNWgcc package.

pkgsrc bootstraps fine, but nothing will build; it says
No acceptable compiler for (whatever package).

In /usr/pkg/etc/mk.conf, I have PKGSRC_COMPILER set to /usr/sfw/bin/gcc, which is where the gcc that successfully built pkgsrc's bootstrap is. What gives?

I thought I did, though. I'll recheck everything. I just finished getting Firefox 38 on it.

So, anyway, I put this on my relatively virgin Ultra-3 (Solaris 10) which only had 2.0.0.x on it before and it traps just the same. I think it's something due to the build.

Temporary workaround: set gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled to false. You won't get WOFF fonts, but the browser doesn't crash, at least not for me.
