Won another Solbourne S3000 on eBay. These are one of my favourite weird SPARCs, not just because Solbournes run their bespoke unusual version of SunOS 4, but also because of the literally hot hot hot gas plasma display. I have one, complete with case, but wanted a spare, and this one appeared to be in great shape.

Box arrived, with some obvious shipping damage (bad sign). Opened it up. It was floating in packing peanuts (worse sign), though it was in its carrying case, which was a nice surprise. Opened it up to discover ... the DISPLAY WAS CRACKED. No padding around the glass display at all!

Thanks to this idiot's carelessness, there is one less S3000 in the world. I can probably raid it for parts, I guess, but the display will not show an image at all. And the flaring orange gas plasma display is the best part of these things.

In fairness to the seller, they have agreed to refund. So, while I'm unhappy with the fact that a rare S3000 is ruined, at least this person is honest.

Why wouldn't you want the card? Without it you have no framebuffer, unless you really insist on using a serial console only. With the 233MHz CPU option this is actually a pretty nice classic AIX workstation you have there.

The IBM spec sheet I have says ECC for these. I am not aware of any way to exceed the 768MB limit. MemoryX sometimes has this spec.

There are a couple of local attacks you can mount, but you need to have *a* login (I broke into one of my old systems this way when I forgot what the root password was). I believe there are some CDE attacks you can try too, but since you have a real IBM machine, better just to get an AIX disc. You'll need it sooner or later anyway.

Crammed into a charcoal grey ultra-quiet Nanoxia Deep Silence DS1 ATX case with an Antec 550W power supply, the side decal provides the majority of the DEC-XYness. You won't know it's there until it's ready to pounce and consume you in the hotness. (The Nanoxia case also hides the (in this case, non-functional) USB ports, which helped since this machine runs Tru64 most of the time. No USB in that, so no sense having them exposed doing bupkis.)

Well, like everything else, it depends on the data rate, the network ... but the controller at least should be able to manage 25Mbit/s without difficulty, I should think. Would it be worth investing in the pci cage for a SCSI card usage? Also, would it be worth considering upgrading to a dual cpu unit...should I be able to find one? I suppose that last question is just personal preference.

The PCI cage? I think so, if SCSI throughput's going to be what you'd use it for. The extra CPU would mostly benefit using it as, you know, a computer.

As to OS7, Id never install it, even if it had been ported. It was my first real experience with a Mac OS and it made me want to pull my hair out.

I'll be the token classic Mac OS defender: under the hood, it's crap. But when it works, the user experience is excellent, which is why we're still saying FTFF in OS X 13 years after Steve-o eulogized OS 9 at WWDC.

The ability to run Classic apps is why my daily driver Power Macs run 10.4.

I like the 2nd season so far. That's mostly because I'm a Commodore fan, but I'm impressed to note that the screen displays are not unreasonable. The font is a little off, the user interface sometimes looks like the bloated spawn of an Apple II that crept upon a C64 in the dark of night, and in one eye-roller they tried programming it in ANSI C, but the technical aspects are really not bad. They've also backed off on the melodrama a bit and that helps.

So my new-2-me Power Series 800 laptop, running AIX 4.1.5, does not have any devices.pcmcia.* drivers, explaining why the PCMCIA slots are apparently non-functional.

I don't have IBM 4.1 media -- I only have the perverse AIX 4.1.x media for the Apple Network Server, and there are no PCMCIA device drivers on them anyway that SMIT could find. Does someone have an ISO of a 4.1.5 (or even 4.1.4) CD handy (this is legal: if you have the hardware, you have an implicit AIX license)? Failing that, can someone with an 820 or an 850 copy off the contents of /usr/lpp/devices.pcmcia* ? I'll fashion some serial copy to get it over to it.

I actually rather like Prolog. It's an interesting way to write programs which is vaguely practical (as long as you have a proper ! operator or else you end up backtracking all to heck). But it's pretty alien even compared to functional programming, so I can understand why it never caught on.

kokoboi sent me his files and unfortunately it looks like they're specific to the Motorola after all -- I was able to get the basic PCMCIA adapter up, but his devices.pcmcia.ethernet has a prerequisite for devices.isa.ethernet, and when he sent me that, that wanted a prereq of devices.mca.XXXX. Since I know these guys attach ISA to their internal PCI bus, I'm quite sure that won't work.

So it's back to square one. I know others here have these machines! Any assistance appreciated, since this is a doorstop at the moment.

Should work, but don't know for certain (the POWER6 has a GXT145 and it's 6.1).

My "retro PC" is an Am5x86 with VLB graphics and lots of ISA slots. Handles a lot of old DOS games that balk at my old P75.

SDL2 is kind of a bag of hurt on old stuff (at least in my experience).

With kokoboi's help I was able to update all the OS components, but that seems to have broken X (it now gives the infamous 'no aixgsc in ksh' error) despite the display still being detected and useable by the LFT, and the PCMCIA slots still don't work.

So let this be a precautionary tale for anyone who gets an ThinkPad 800: this damn thing is cantankerous and you probably shouldn't update *anything*.

The display is detected as a TP850, btw. Wonder if that's the problem.

No idea, actually. All of my VNCable systems (two Power Macs, one Intel) are hooked up to KVMs anyway, and none of them are later than 10.6.

We are back in business. Turns out r.stricklin also has an 800, and he was able to get me the patches for 4.1.5. The Type 6020 is apparently just different enough that the usual wsg0 and PCMCIA smitpaks don't work. Now I have CDE and Ethernet. The display is still a 'ThinkPad 850' but the configuration module is different for this earlier video chip.

So gravedigging, since I spotted this. That is not the 800. My 800 says "Power Series 800" on the front, but otherwise looks almost the same as an 850. And, according to some IBM internal stuff I was leaked, that's not a coincidence; the "800" was the original incarnation of the 850, called Woodfield, and then IBM decided to bump the clock speed and make some other minor changes to create the GA-released 850, which was Woodfield Prime. In fact, IBM never called it an 800 in any documentation, just a Type 6020.
