IBM RS/6000 Thinkpad Laptop "Model 860" - Page 1

Guess what I picked up today? An IBM RS/6000 Thinkpad Model 860. I found it at a computer recycle store that I have visited many times before. Somehow this time I decided to check the Laptop cases and voila there it is!! It was inside one of the cases with all the parts you see below. The store clerk din't know anything about it and offered to sell it to me including the case "AS IS". :o

Now, the only issue I have is the password to access the OS.. I believe that this model will only support AIX 4.1 or lower. The search is on for the OS.....

It will support 4.2 in theory, but you'll lose graphics (lft only) without hacking in filesets from 4.1.

You can reset the passwords by booting the CD install media, selecting a maintenance shell, mounting the drive, and editing the files in /etc/security directly. Any 4.1.4 or 4.1.5 disc will work; there's no special release that's needed for the laptops.

I know what you mean. They are almost impossible to find because to the average Joe they look like an old Dos/Windows laptop and they throw them away.

That was hiding at RE-PC? Nice.
I have the lower model 850 and the only real difference is the screen is smaller and the CPU 66mhz slower.

I was doing a bit of research this afternoon, trying to learn more about all the IBM PowerPC laptop models and I was surprised to find incomplete and/or contradicting information about them. For example, the Wikipedia page for the ThinkPad 800 Series says that IBM produced these models: 800, 820, 821, 822, 823, 850, 851, 860. But all the other sites claim that only three models are known: 820, 850 and 860.
Now, here is the fun part about all this, we know what models 820, 850 and 860 look like because pictures of them are easy to find.
But what is this one? The elusive and the prototype Model 800….

This one is the Model 820....

They're worth a decent penny but even USD$800 sounds rather steep.

I don't think you can actually expect a working battery for any laptop that old.
It is worth what you can afford to pay.
For example, I placed $550 bid on this Tadpole ALPHAbook, but it sold for $1,314.79...

AIX 4.2 has CDE.

hehehe that's the same answer i got from the seller :) but hmm i wonder how about vwarez? does your battery pack still got juice? you mention only issue is password so i thought everything works as is including battery right?

but just now, i saw a instruction how to change a new battery for this case, so maybe its ok then :)

   wow! that ALPHAbook really looks good!! what a lucky bidder got that nice package :) does it mean all these interesting things only available in US and Europe right? how about Asia? is it possible? i can only imagine Japan maybe..

If you're insane I believe you can install Windows NT 4 for PowerPC on the 800 series laptops. ;)

OS/2 for PowerPC might also work on the 860.

I put NT on an Alpha once. It was just like any other NT4 machine, and much harder to find software for. The Alpha had the advantage of FX!32, which the PPC doesn't have. I'd say stick with AIX.

OS/2 for PPC was very beta.

AIX gets weirder as it gets older. I wouldn't use a machine that only supports 4.1 as my introduction to AIX, though v4 was better than v3.

I’m still looking for the AIX CDs, so laptop status is unknown. On the other hand, the battery takes full charge!!
