I've been struggling to replicate this "swishy tremolo" for the last couple days without success (clip from Chris Abbott's remix of Driller, on Back In Time 2):

I know this was an incredibly common effect during the 80s. What was the synth, a DX7? What was the patch, and how would you describe it so it can be recreated? I can emulate the tremolo, and the slowly panning resonance filter, but I'm having trouble with the "swishy attack" on each beat.

That is exactly right.

Note that some lower-spec machines can only be in one mode at a time and must be reflashed to switch; my 164LX is one of these. Since it exists to run Tru64, it runs the SRM console. Linux can also boot on the ARCS console, but most everything else needs SRM.

Right. NetBSD, Tru64, VMS, etc., need SRM. Only Linux, it seems, can tolerate ARCS.

My 164LX feels more "official" running Tru64, even though I do have NetBSD.

I stuck a DECchip-based video card in mine. Much, much faster in Tru64. NetBSD can also accelerate this framebuffer (tga).

Given all the crap Lenovo's pulled of late, I'd love one ... from some other company under license.

Servers: Scandinavian cities, caused by stockholm originally, whose envisioned name was first kalgoorlie but I couldn't remember how to spell it. Currently the full time machines are thule, oslo, sondrestrom, oulu and uppsala. helsinki is retired, stockholm is a backup and museum piece, godthaab is now a disk duplicator and reykjavik was demoted to a client. Haven't assigned a copenhagen, tromso or linkoping yet.

Clients: First name of someone involved in their development, directly or otherwise. This G5 is bruce, after Bruce Horn, Apple Finder author. The SGIs are exceptions, named by colour, and Intel Macs don't get names because they suck.

Laptops: Names of dogs. Sometimes appropriate (the Ultra-3 is sparky; the TP800 is lucky, after Thomas Watson's favourite hunting dog).

Well, if we're also adding network enabled devices, the printer and print servers are named for famous ... printers. currier was decommissioned but gutenberg (Brother HL-2070N) is still operational.

The network cameras are named for naughty: voyeur, poseur and frotteur.

Macs used to face the user also, and then Steve-O somewhere around the G3 era realized it was bad marketing.

Well, I bought an Xbox 360 for three reasons:

- it was cheap (garage sale on a slim)
- it came with Portal, which is a delight to play
- it's PowerPC based and I wanted to hack it

Welcome. I love the Indy for nostalgic reasons, but my "super Fuel" is the SGI I use the most, is more friendly to mainstream hardware and monitors, and definitely lends itself to upgrades. If it didn't have some residual value as a workstation, which as you noticed tends to drive prices up, it would be a great starter SGI.

That does look like a machine in stellar condition. Unfortunately, no way to tell on the V10/V12 from the outside. Both cards look like that.

Bet on it being a V10, which is still decent, and be delighted if it's a V12.

Quick survey of the two Fuels I have in the house (the super Fuel and the stripper spare) shows both systems have "copyright 2002" and at least one of them was factory 700MHz.

Yes. But if you can, ps/2 is better. With usb, if you make any changes, you'll be single-usering in and deleting /etc/ioconfig.conf a lot. I even considered making a shutdown script that would do that every time it turned off, just in case.

Ha. That's exactly what I ended up doing!

Also, mopar5150 and I did a lot of looking at Fuel motherboards and how well they cooperate with USB devices, especially in the PROM monitor. Our conclusion was we could find no obvious pattern of mo'bo version or firmware level that predicted how good the USB would be.

That said, I use a bog-standard Apple USB keyboard with mine (the white pre-chiclet version) connected to an Aten USB KVM.

I have the wired version of that Microsoft mouse, if it's the model I'm thinking of. It is my mouse of choice, not just because of what you said, but also the nice "clicky" scroll wheel with real detents instead of sloppy sliding. It calls itself the Laser Mouse 6000.

Current lifespan of iBook G4: 10 years. Battery replaced a couple times, RAM maxed out.

Firefox is going to drop i386 pretty soon also.

Post whatever part number you see on the graphics card (open the can, it should be visible without pulling it from the slot) and we'll get you the spec.

Yeah, that's a G5. You either have a DP 2.3 (most reliable) or DC 2.3 (a bit faster but poorer track record). The good news is, the 2.3 is aircooled, so no need to worry about overhauling the liquid cooling like on a Quad. Decent machine, that. Will run 10.4 or 10.5 very nicely.

On a Fuel? Just use the on-motherboard serial port. 38400, 8N1.

Replacing the Fuel battery is pretty straightforward. I remember posting on a thread about it. You can get a larger capacity battery which is compatible.

No, not particularly. It's really just high grade radiator coolant (Delphi A2, to be exact; Delphi 151 should be equivalent). Higher performance coolants can be substituted if desired. Apple has the MSDS and it's just the usual expected PEG-in-water solution.

Actually, the LCS for CPU one in my Quad G5 has failed, so it won't be running this winter (this makes me sad. If you know some easy way ot get this working again, PM me. I think fluid is...not so fluid any longer).

What type, the Cooligy v2 or the Delphi v1? Although Delphi systems were the sucky ones in earlier LCSes, in the Quad the Delphi is the preferred assembly.

I have some notes on dealing with the LCS here . You can either find an entire assembly and redo it (as I do), or there is a way to refurbish the coolant; I have it linked.

Yep, that's a Delphi.

There are a few people who have run the G5 on water, but it needs silver elements in there to retard microbial growth.

Something like Origyn might work okay (it's been very successful on the Amiga), but I think NetSurf is a better basis, and is actually known to compile.

So, in the continuing adventures of my $4500 doorstop:

Turns out DKS has absolutely no farking idea how to maintain a Mac. Besides the fact that the Mac IIci he sent me had obviously bad caps (which I had a friend fix, about $200 in his time and shipping), the Apple Partition Map and the booter HFS volume have several critical soft errors to the point where writing anything to the HFS partition will corrupt it. It looks like he just dd'ed some tainted master copy of the drive over and called it a day. Disk First Aid actually says it's not an HFS volume; DiskWarrior tries to fix it but fails when writing the replacement directory. It did this on two different hard disks, so it's clearly something about the filesystem itself.

I had enough presence of mind to clone the disk to an image file before I started messing with it, but it's just too iffy and I can't make *any* changes to the HFS partition without causing soft errors. The best thing to do would be to reinstall everything. However, while I have some of the MacIvory installer floppies, I don't have the OpenGenera CD (you'd think for the price it cost that lousy piece of crap he is could have included some ISOs or copies) or any way of rebuilding the FEP partition.

If someone is willing to part with their set, I'd sure appreciate it, because right now what I have is a f%%king $4500 doorstop. It's too big to be a paperweight, so it's not even good at that.

Assuming that's so (I can't find any way of formatting the special partition in it, though I guess the Installer must know), I still can't reinstall Genera.

I managed to get an Open Genera 2.0 CD (Genera 8.5) which is perfect since I'm still waiting for a new hard disk to try to rebuild the MacIvory debacle from hell, and I have the super sexytime AlphaPC 164LX running Tru64 5.1. After I made the kernel setting changes, enabled the packet filter (and fixed their perms), upgraded the core genera executable to 8.18 and made sure the right CDFS mount options were used, Open Genera starts up: http://www.floodgap.com/iv/2715

However, I can't for the life of me get it to NFS to the host system. When I try to define the site to complete the Genera configuration, I keep getting RPC errors trying to mount it. The NFS mount points on the Tru64 host can be mounted on other systems on the network, so I know they work. Setting them to allow access to anyone, without a password, doesn't fix it.

Any ideas? Anyone running Open Genera successfully on their own Alpha? Is it Digital UNIX or Tru64?

How do you mean, different? It's still NFSv2, right?
