I just joined the 164LX club with a 600MHz CPU, 512MB RAM, S3 video, Tulip NIC and qlogic SCSI card. It already has the SRM console flashed and runs NetBSD happily. Should be fun when it arrives; just need to find it a case and AT power supply.

I use a Bluetooth AP in those cases. The Belkin F8T030 seems to work well.

Yeah, I'm not that nuts. I even have an ADC panel for it, so I'll keep the original video card. My worry with the fan is the Sonnet 1.8 I have was used and while I tried to source a fan of approximately the same size, I'm not sure about the mounting screws it came with and I definitely will need to rewire the power terminals (I might tap the hard disk line).

On the other hand, my iMac G4 works so well in the commons area I really haven't been motivated to attack the Cube.

Don't use /dev/vty0; those are the ASMI-managed serial ports. It will work with getty as a serial console but it doesn't work as a general purpose serial port. For my AIX POWER6, I installed a "2-Port Asynchronous EIA-232 PCI Adapter" (FC 5723). These are very easy to find used; mine was $25. The card supports the smit PCI Hot Swap Manager assuming your hardware does.

Once installed, detected and configured, you should now have /dev/tty0 and /dev/tty1. In /etc/uucp/Devices, I have

Nope. Like I say, the VTYs suffice as serial consoles, but they won't work for, say, modems. That was the problem I had connecting my POWER6 to my GSM terminal.

My server room has an LG portable A/C. It vents under one of the turbine vents on the roof so I didn't have to run it out the window. It pulls about 1.2kW when active and is good for 11,000 BTU, and can keep the room under 80 F even in the summer. In the winter, with Energy Save on, it barely turns on the fan now and then to blow over the condenser coils.

I keep the door closed when the central heat or A/C are on, and I've blocked the vent in that room, so it's basically on its own environmental circuit. The G4 server has a USB thermometer to log the current temperature so I can monitor it remotely.

My machine is not supported by apple so it is kind of a personal 'fuck you' to them to continue to run their newest software on my ancient hardware.

I think those reviews are based on unreasonable expectations. For the same power usage, a portable A/C will almost always be less efficient than a window-mounted unit, let alone a central system. If you're trying to use a portable A/C to cool a large uncontained space, it will use a lot of power and do a relatively lousy job. Plus, people don't do smart things like wrap the exhaust ducting, or they try tricks like lengthening the hose beyond the rated capacity (I, uh, may or may not have done this and may or may not have found out this was a bad idea), or they expect that a portable unit with a separate intake hose will work without it (they won't, because most portable A/Cs cause negative pressure in the room they operate).

After all that I didn't post the model. It's an LG LP1111WXR. The related LG LP1311BXR is mechanically identical.

Just remember, if you do buy one, to use it in a contained space (preferably with the door closed), wrap the exhaust heat duct with fleece or insulation, and do not add an extension to or pinch the exhaust duct it comes with. The fan is rated just enough to get the air out of that into a low-pressure area and no greater. I got out my hole saw and put a hole in the ceiling to run it through under the roof turbine vents, but I can get away with this because the humidity here is so low. In your neck of the woods, I would vent directly to the outside since the exhaust has some amount of moisture in it; condensation and rot in the attic would be Bad(tm).

I just want you all to know that my unit has exceptionally prodigious uptime.

I didn't get around to these Irix fixes (the biggest priority was getting it working again with XQuartz on OS X), but there are lots of general fixes in 0.5.0, and there is an Irix binary of that. Tested on the Indy and the Fuel, built with MIPSPro.
